THE Taliban says it is determined to kill Britain's Prince Harry, serving in Afghanistan four years after his previous deployment was cut short over security concerns.

A militia spokesman said yesterday the group had a ''high-value plan'' to attack Prince Harry in the southern province of Helmand.

''We will do our best to kill Prince Harry and Britain's other troops based in Helmand,'' the spokesman, who gave his name as Zabihullah Mujahid, told AFP by telephone.

''It is not important for us to kidnap him … we will kill him,'' he added.

The 27-year-old helicopter pilot will spend four months based at the heavily fortified Camp Bastion in Helmand.

Our former BG Lee has never fought a war in his life. In fact none of our BG's have gone into deadly combat.

Prince Harry is going into what is probably the most dangerous war zone in Afghanistan - Helmand Province.

An SAF Soldier's Story:
IN HIS 17 years in the army, Lieutenant-Colonel Jimmy Toh has never had a more challenging task. On Aug 9, his job is to ensure that the National Day Parade (NDP) runs like clockwork.
From his vantage point in a room just above the grandstand - which gives him a full view of the stadium - he will cue the movement of about 11,200 participants and other support staff.
'It's a big project that involves both military and non-military personnel and many of them are waiting for just one command,' said Lt-Col Toh, 35, who is in charge of a battalion of 600 men.

In the control room, he and five others pore over a table on their laptops that lists every cue they have to issue to the participants below. It is a mind-boggling 80 pages long.
...Lt-Col Toh said they are also required to make split decisions: 'Within seconds we have decide to drop a segment, or ask the emcees to do something to make up for lost time if we are lagging.'
Any lag can have a ripple effect, causing subsequent events to run late. So, the cues are vital, ensuring there is no lag and that 'the transition from one event to the next is seamless'.
This is important as performances like the 'brass band have to finish in time for us to swing audience attention to the Red Lions landing in the stadium'.

There are also 42 liaison officers carrying walkie-talkies to ease the flow of people through the stadium's nine gates. If there is no proper coordination, the gates could become chokepoints.

cannot compare the 2 lah, if Singapore has battle harden soldiers/generals, it means we would be in conflict with another country, even if SAF troops sent to conflict areas like Afghanistan for peace keeping & somehow forced to fight/return fire, sure to be targetted by other terror groups later & you know lah, MIW don't want & need this kind of attention so they prefer to avoid conflict situations, like that how to have battle earned/experienced star generals. The senior military ranks will also retire & leave service & made ceo/chairman in many gahmen businesses/companies.

The rescue helicopter was flown by a NZ pilot from the RNZAF. This Colonel was later promoted to BG, the rest is history.

For the royals it's a tradition. Prince Harry had to fought for his right to be deployed....back then his uncle Prince Andrew also saw frontline action in Falklands war....the govt had wanted to skip him but the queen ordered that her son be accorded no special treatment...compare that with Lky's extra eggs char kway teow theory.
The royals deserve respect.

Prince Harry told his trainers at the flight course that he'll give up his slot at flight school if he's not going to see any active duty. He did not want to deprive another pilot of the chance to train. This Captain I will salute.

TORONTO - To some, it may seem that Buckingham Palace’s reaction to Prince Harry’s celebrated romp in Las Vegas was to dispatch him to Afghanistan.

Those who might think that way, would view it as punishment — or at least to remove him from the public eye.

I’d argue the opposite.

While I doubt Harry’s hijinks in Vegas were a ploy to force the Palace to exile him for a while, it also seems a fact that he’s delighted to be there.

Prince Harry genuinely seems to relish army life.

He not only seems willing to serve in the dangerous environment of Afghanistan, but is eager to do it. At age 27, he’s a helicopter pilot, an air gunner, a captain in the army, and he obviously craves adventure.

Yes, Las Vegas was adventure, but so is hunting Taliban in Afghanistan.

Technically, this is he second tour, and quite different from his first one.

In 2008, his assignment in Afghanistan was shrouded in secrecy for fear the media would be a harassment, but more so, that the Taliban would target him. So he didn’t stay long at his job, but was pulled out early for security reasons among others.

This time there’s been no attempt at secrecy.

Photographs have circled the world showing him inspecting the helicopter he’ll presumably co-pilot, and man the machine gun if necessary.

He’s to be there for four months (as Capt. Wales), and it’s probable that he loves every moment of it.

Harry is quite different from his brother, the second in line to the throne.

Where William is dutiful and careful, Harry is frisky and unpredictable.

Frankly, Prince Harry seems more fun than his brother who is a poster boy for decorum.

Harry has a wilder streak that must give his handlers pause, and make his grandparents wonder at what mischief he’ll stir up next.

Harry probably has a perfect temperament for soldiering.

It doesn’t look as if he’s easy to intimidate, and he’s clearly more physical than cerebral. Nor is he a softy, pining for a cushy life.

It would seem to me that soldiers under his command like and respect him as someone who doesn’t seek favours and who endures what they endure.

Although the war in Afghanistan is shutting down from the perspective of the Alliance, it is still lethal. The Taliban seem to be stepping up their resistance and clearly intend to try and take over when foreign troops leave.

One has to go way back in British history to find a time when British monarchs, or potential monarchs, led troops into battle. Most of us depend on Shakespeare to tell us about Agincourt and the King Henrys.

When Edward, Prince of Wales, visited British troops on the Western Front in WWI, those in charge tried to ensure that he was in a relatively quiet sector. When he was there, the Germans lobbed a few shells over which didn’t do any damage, but were in his vicinity and were a convincing backdrop to war.

Some idiot in charge was so impressed the Prince of Wales was supposedly under fire, that he, Prince Edward, was awarded a Military Cross.

To his credit, the Prince of Wales rejected the award and said he’d done nothing to deserve it, and save the award for those who actually fought.

Prince Harry serving in Afghanistan is a revival of a long-abandoned tradition of the royal family going to war.

Agree.. Its some sort of a tradition for the male members of the British Monarch to serve in the UK Armed Services..

Harry's grandfather Prince Phillip also served in the Royal Navy during WW2..

In fact many members of the elite British families had fought for the country in every war that Great Britain had participated..
