Yaccob tries to defned his children--but fails

Let us not lose sight of the fact that Yaacob Ibrahim should walk the talk being one of the top Minister and thus one of Singapore's top leader.

He is doing a great injustice to all Singaporeans by having his family stay overseas, holding dual citizenships and thus not being a true Singaporean. As a leader exhorting all that is good and great about Singapore, and whatever bullshit he has been spouting all these years, without our general knowledge, he has been doing the exact opposite by hiding the true facts about himself and his family.

We are not interested whether his son will serve NS as that is only a 2 year sacrifice because to do otherwise will definitely put paid to his job as a Minister. What is important is whether Yacoob and his family consider Singapore as their home and their future plans will be to stay in Singapore. From what I can deduce, Yacoob plans to work here whilst his family will stay in the States, but son will serve NS. Upon retirement, Yacoob will move to the States permanently enjoying the fruits whilst the rest of Singapore can go to hell for all he cares. Am I right?

He probably bought a villa with vast land/ranch there already given the indecent salaries he was earning for doing so little.........

Agree. If the oppos want to hammer away, they should be focused on this as an issue of ethics and not legalality.

Yacob should know better that to place his family into such a questionable circumstance. It must have been a conscious decision on his part to have applied for US citizenship for his kids when he should have been true to his Singaporean roots.

Typical MIW bullshit, they don't lie, they just tell half-truths.

How many of his Malay kindred have to slog it out in Singapore while this idiot quietly created a backdoor for himself via legal sleight-of-hand.

Shameless.

I hope he fries for this.

Cannot assume so for all new citizens. Some are just like his situation, one foot in and the other foot out. Among the new citizens, we may find the spouse still retains his/her foreign citizenship and is just a PR here. For this group, I think they can relate to Yakult very well and are of one mind.

His wife may be holding him to gun point. After all, which passport is better: American or Singaporean?

More likely the conscious decision not to have them renounce the US citizenship until inevitable circumstances arise. The kids gains US citizenship thru the process of aquisition when one of the parent is a US citizen, regardless of the place of birth of these kids.

Frankly speaking, Singapore passport is better as it has much easier access to many places in Asia. And it is much safer to travel with Singapore passport... Americans are not exactly a very welcome global citizen in many parts of the world.

Even if your parents are US citizens and you are born outside of US, you must register with the US embassy before you can get your US citizenship. If your parents don't register you as one, you will not have US citizenship.

True but its not the passport but the prestige.

After all, which Singaporean has dared to travel to all of Asia? Given Singapore's cosyness to the West, terrorist would still kill both US and SG passport holders

Yaacob would have been more convincing if he had spoken Hokkien and say 'pak see beh zhao'.
Goh Chok Tong's original version not quite convincing because you can't sound serious speaking Hokkien without sprinkling a few obligatory sentence enhancers for emphasis.

never been a secret, thus there's no hypocrisy. it's just that sinkies are daft, unconnected, living in a frog's well, and ignorant. out here in timbuktu, every time a sinkie dignitary is in town and a function or official makan session is held, invitees also get to see wives and families of said dignitaries ad officials. 9 out of 10 have foreign wives and rojak kids. kind of expect this when almost all of them are gov scholars and they spent much of their youth for their studies overseas. the days of sinkie scholar ministers marrying sinkie wives are long gone. this is the reality since the 80's, 90's, and today. the hypocrisy doesn't lie with these over-rated highly paid chobolans marrying foreign wives and giving them independence of thought and where they want to be long term. the hypocrisy lies with the quadruple standard of law and judicial power applied to ordinary sinkies who live on paycheck to paycheck and are not globally mobile vs foreigners from first world countries vs foreigners from the fourth world and vs sinkie elites who are considered higher mortals. basically application of the constitution and law lies with the discretion, fancy and whim of those in charge.

Thinking back about GCT's 'Pak si beh zhao' braggadoccio, I wonder what his ancestors who were quitters themselves have to say.

hmmm...

Chok Tong! Shut up fool!
If we had not quitted, you would have been just another Stephen Merchant lookalike in China who rolls his 'r's to make women think you've got a very long tongue.

bad info from gms again. a kid belonging to a u.s. parent can anytime go to a passport office and get a u.s. passport with proof of parent's citizenship. obviously outside of u.s., since the kid needs a travel document to travel, parent applies for one at the nearest u.s. consulate or embassy. there's no time limit like in sg's case of 1 year of birth. all the parent (1 is enough) needs to show is birth certificate to prove kid is his or hers. this gms needs to study up or get good knowledgeable advisors on matters he has no expertise in.

There is a legal and technically discrepancy here. No male children born Singapore citizens at birth above the age of seven shall be allowed to renounce their Singapore citizenship until they completed NSF. The age of renounciation is before seven, i.e. what PAP called having enjoyed Singapore education system and must payback by NS.

Jedi,

I appreciate your compliment but please please, don't put them in comparison with them! I would rather be a simple peasant rather than put side by side with them to be classified as "talent".

Goh Meng Seng

Silang Ah Seng, you deliberately avoided my question.

Are you children:

a. entitled to 3* PR passes;
b. entitled (even if they don't have) to a PRC(HKSAR) passport?

Silangtao? You think Singaporeans don't know the situtation in HK is it? :oIo:
