Yaccob tries to defned his children--but fails

There is no law or there has never ever been a law that forbids anyone holding more than one citizenship. If there was, a lot of people including family members of cabinet, the upper echelon of society will be in trouble. The only thing the authorities can do is take away your Singapore citizenship if they find out if you hold any other citizenship which they stopped doing long time ago. The exception is kids who are below the age of 21. They allow them to hold it until then then they must renouce the foreign one or the Singapore citizenship. Singapore males unfortunately because of NS and the required declaration can't get away. For females, they can't be bothered. The stock reply to all these questions is that the Govt does not allow dual citizenship except for children under 21 hrs.

People can't tell the difference between law and the Govt. When the Govt says it does not allow, it just means they have the right to take away your Singapore citizenship and nothing more. Ever heard of anyone being charged in court for any of this shit. You can't charge Nyone if there is no law in the first place. Australia until April 2004 had such a law.

Will you fucking stop embarrassing yourself? People here don't know, never mind. You, a politician (or wannabe) should know that: 1. Singapore does not allow dual citizenship. However, Singapore forces the dual citizen to make the choice only at the age of 21. 2. No. But Singapore can take away your citizenship if you hold another citizenship after 21.3. Yes, subject to 1 above4. See 2 above. You are worse than your grandmother asking the same question again and again.5. No. Only the Minister does, subject to 1. For your info, any renunciation of Singapore citizenship before 21 is invalid. There is a corresponding rule in US but I do not know whether the age is 18 or 21.What kind of Sec Gen are you? Only like to blow your trumpet but don't want to do a bit of fucking research.

The issue of Dual Citizenship is stated in the constitution

Dual citizenship is generally not recognised in Singapore, but is possible up to the age of 22. Such dual citizens may have acquired citizenship by birth in a foreign country, from a foreign citizen parent, or by naturalisation. Singaporean citizens who acquire citizenship of a foreign country after the age of 18 may lose Singaporean citizenship.[7] Foreigners who naturalise as Singaporean citizens are required to renounce all foreign citizenships[8]. Minors who are dual or multiple citizens by birth on foreign soil, by descent from foreign parents or by naturalisation are required to renounce all foreign citizenships by the age of 22 or may lose their Singaporean citizenship[9]

Wikipedia Reference for above 7, 8 & 9 are stated in the constitution

7)^ Article 134(1)(a) Constitution of the Republic of Singapore
8)^ Article 126(1) Constitution of the Republic of Singapore
9)^ Articles 122(4) and 126(3) for Singaporean citizens by descent and registration respectively, no provision for Singaporean citizens by birth

How do Singaporeans acquire foreign citizenship while holding on to their Singapore citizenship?

1. The scholar way - it common practice and nearly all of them seem go be doing that. When they go for their second overseas study sabbatical such as Harvard or wherever, they plan to have kids born there. In many of these countries, kids born on their soil are eligible for citizenship.

2. The rest of Singapore - go work in a foreign country for a period of time from 2 to 4 years and you eligible to apply for citizenship. The trick is to apply for PR / migrant status / green card before going. Once you acquired that country's citizenship, you can return to Singapore. You now have 2 citizenship.

3. Male Singaporeans who lose their citizenship once they reach 21, can then go and work overseas and still get it .

The issue is that most people can't plan or hold this notion that it against the law. The only consideration is to make sure that you declare your appropriate status such as renewing your passport or taking up a civil advice appt. People get into trouble for false declaration. People who have declared that they hold other citizenship when renewing their Singapore passport with no adverse consequence. The world is turning global. Get with the programme.

Well, we know the tricks but we just want the PAP government to declare it publicly. If it is something in practice but at the same time, the government puts up a false front of "no dual citizenship", then it is up to us to take down that mask of hypocrisy.

Let us not lose sight of the fact that Yaacob Ibrahim should walk the talk being one of the top Minister and thus one of Singapore's top leader.

He is doing a great injustice to all Singaporeans by having his family stay overseas, holding dual citizenships and thus not being a true Singaporean. As a leader exhorting all that is good and great about Singapore, and whatever bullshit he has been spouting all these years, without our general knowledge, he has been doing the exact opposite by hiding the true facts about himself and his family.

We are not interested whether his son will serve NS as that is only a 2 year sacrifice because to do otherwise will definitely put paid to his job as a Minister. What is important is whether Yacoob and his family consider Singapore as their home and their future plans will be to stay in Singapore. From what I can deduce, Yacoob plans to work here whilst his family will stay in the States, but son will serve NS. Upon retirement, Yacoob will move to the States permanently enjoying the fruits whilst the rest of Singapore can go to hell for all he cares. Am I right?

In view of Dr Yaacoob's own revelation that his children will hold dual citizenship up till 18 years old by virtue of the fact that his wife is an American citizen, I have sent in the following queries to ICA:

I have a few questions to ask:

1) Does Singapore allow any citizens to hold multiple citizenship?
2) Is it a chargeable crime for anyone to hold dual or multiple citizenship?
2) Is there any age limit for anyone to hold multiple citizenship?
3) If a child is granted two citizenship (including Singapore citizenship) by virtue of his parents' citizenship status, could he rightfully retain both citizenship at the same time?
4) What is the penalty for holding dual citizenship?
5) Does the Immigration department has the right to revoke the Singapore citizenship of those who are found or caught to have dual or multiple citizenship?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Goh Meng Seng

This is not directly related to this thread but indirectly its all the same. Since we are on special treatment for the privilged few. I heard, read and totally and completely agree with LKY on his statement that political division should be a national divide. This is the pinnacle of his wisdom, so so insightful and wise, very few can match this level of wisdom. 99% accurate. As Singaporeans we should never condone national divide. Oh, that 1% that LKY got wrong? It is PAP that's causing the National divide, The political divide caused by opposition to heal the National divide is not the issue. This Yaccob case is a case in point- unfair treatment of who they deem as talent getting special treatment. The PAP cannot even define what talent is, who are they to tell us who the talents are. Name me one PAP talent. TT? GCT? WKS? MBT? YCT? Yacoob??If these are their talents, GMS- you more than well qualify.

PM Lee son is now studying in US right? So, he can apply for PR in US non?

So perhaps, and there were whispers i think, that the gahmen will allow dual citizenship some years down the road.

Good questions, but unanswered as of today.

What is interesting and ironical is this:
While Yaccob is happily handing out citizenship certificates and brand new pink ICs to new citizens who have just committed their lives and families to Singapore as Singaporeans, why didn't he persude his wife to take up Singapore citizenship and their whole family to declare their commitment to Singapore and forego all other citizenships? Isn't this the country that he is doing public service and which he and his colleagues claim they are working so hard (and earning so much) to build a bright future?

That Lee kid who is studying in the US is probably the best of the lot now. HC's product. Won some literary award. Gramps probably used TPL to test waters for his entry into politics. If TPL is well accepted, you will see a prominent candidate in the next GE. But since Nicole Seah has succeed at the tender age of 24, Gramps is convinced that the time is ripe. Be ready to embrace a new generation of Lees

Knowing his penchant for being a know-all and smart alec, he should have sounded out Nicole as potential grand-daughter-in-law material by now.
Belmont Beware! :D

Don't duck the issue with technicalities lah. Are your children entitled to a 3* resident card? Are they entitled to a HKSAR passport?

HK doesn't have citizenship, no problem of Dual Citizenship here.

interesting to find out whether MBT's wif took up Sin citizenship...also think another current cabinet minister Iswaran is married to an american(?), same Q applies..
You are sharp, brother!

That is the key question to answer, not about the children. They are being used by HIM as red herrings.

y Q is a moot point..

yaacob's children auto americans by virture of his wife's american status i.e. acquisition...regardless of where they were born..

The point is simple, how did his children ended up with dual citizenship in the first place? Are they born in Singapore or America? If they are born in Singapore, then apparently they would have to apply for American citizenship but why? If they are born in America, then by the Constitution, they are not eligible to be Singapore citizenship if they apply for the citizenship of the place of birth.

Jedi,

I appreciate your compliment but please please, don't put them in comparison with them! I would rather be a simple peasant rather than put side by side with them to be classified as "talent".

Obama may deny him entry.

Cannot assume so for all new citizens. Some are just like his situation, one foot in and the other foot out. Among the new citizens, we may find the spouse still retains his/her foreign citizenship and is just a PR here. For this group, I think they can relate to Yakult very well and are of one mind.:)
