SINGAPORE - A married businessman took a beauty contestant as his mistress for almost two years and showered her with gifts including a luxury car, but when she found herself a younger lover, he flew into a rage.

According to court documents, Lim Hong Liang, 55, twice ordered his mistress' lover to be attacked.

Over the two attacks, Mr Joshua Koh Kian Yong suffered several injuries including fractures to his nose and lacerations to his face.

A scar on the now 35-year-old's mouth is likely to remain a permanent feature.

On Tuesday (April 2), District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt found Lim, the owner of SNL Logistics, guilty of taking part in a seven-person conspiracy to cause grievous hurt to Mr Koh by using a weapon.

The judge also found a middleman linked to the attack - mover Ong Hock Chye, 48 - guilty of the same offence. The pair were convicted after a 10-day trial.

Lim was smitten with Ms Audrey Chen Ying Fang, 27, after they met in 2014. Although he was married with three children, the pair became involved in an intimate relationship.
Ron Lim De Mai, 26, was jailed for three years, with four strokes of the cane, on March 21, 2018.

He gave her a job at his logistics firm. As an administrative executive, she was paid about $2,000 a month but the court heard that she did not have to turn up for work.
The car he gave her - a white Mercedes Benz - carried the plate "1991", her birth year.

She used his credit cards and paid for her needs with it.

Lim even allowed her to live rent-free in a unit he owned at The Parc condominium in West Coast Walk, renovating it to her preferred "Hello Kitty" theme.

But he set her a condition - she was his and only his.

In their submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutors Tan Wen Hsien and Stephanie Koh said: "In return, Lim expected her to be faithful to him, and not to 'fool around outside'."

But she did. In March 2016, Ms Chen started dating Mr Koh, a banquet waiter, and announced their relationship on social media.

When Lim discovered Ms Chen, who was crowned Miss Mermaid 2016, was seeing Mr Koh and taking him to the apartment, he paid $5,000 to hitmen to scar Mr Koh's face.

About a month after they started dating, Lim's older son and Lim's nephew Ron Lim De Mai, 26, turned up at The Parc condominium.

The first attack took place on April 8. The two men barged into the apartment Ms Chen and Mr Koh were in and Ron Lim attacked him relentlessly, punching and kicking him for about 15 minutes.

As he lay there injured, they took photos of Mr Koh with their phones.

At Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Mr Koh was found to have fractures to his nose.

After the attack, Lim, who was then in China for a kidney transplant, sent Ms Chen voice messages in Mandarin. He accused her of bringing a man to the apartment while he was overseas.

But the young lovers were not deterred and continued seeing each other. However, they were found out again.

On April 30 at 1am, while the two were having supper at Huay Kwang Thai Kitchen in Townshend Road near Little India, Mr Koh was ambushed.

He was punched in the head and as he tried to run, he was slashed with a penknife on his arm and face.

Ms Chen testified that she saw a gaping wound on Mr Koh's mouth. Although he was treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, that scar is now likely to be permanent.
The DPPs said: "The disfiguring wound would be a poignant reminder to the victim to stay away from (Lim's) mistress."

According to court documents, Lim wanted his nephew to "teach Joshua a lesson" and it was Ron Lim who roped in Ong to recruit others to carry out the task.
The DPPs stated: "At Ong's suggestion, the plan evolved into slashing Joshua's face, which Lim agreed to.

"At all stages, Lim and Ong were actively aware of the manner and extent of the eventual attack on Joshua."

The slasher - Nur Muhammad Irwan Mohd Ngat, 30 - was dealt with earlier in court along with the other attackers, which included former technician Mohammad Amin Aman, 47; Juhari Ab Karim, 34; and Ron Lim.

They were each sentenced to between 15 months and 14½ years' jail.

Of these four men, only Juhari, who had punched Mr Koh but did not slash him, was spared the cane.

Irwan, who was also found guilty of drug trafficking, received the harshest sentence which also included 16 strokes of the cane.

His then fiancee - Nur Atika Fauziana Sherhan, 22 - who was also involved in the second attack, was sentenced earlier to reformative training.

On Tuesday, the businessman was offered bail of $10,000 while Ong's bail was set at $20,000. They are slated to be sentenced on May 17.

Offenders convicted of causing grievous hurt with a weapon can be jailed for life or jailed for up to 15 years with a fine or caning.

Lim cannot be caned as he is over 50 years old.

SINGAPORE - A man who was to be retried in court for masterminding an attack against his mistress' boyfriend has been issued a conditional warning instead.
Businessman Lim Hong Liang, 57, had in 2019 been sentenced to six years' jail for engaging in a conspiracy to voluntarily cause grievous hurt to Mr Joshua Koh Kian Yong, 36.
He appealed against the conviction and sentence. During the appeal hearing last year, it surfaced that a police statement had been withheld by prosecutors during Lim's district court trial in 2018.
The High Court in February this year then ordered a retrial for Lim.
However, the charge was withdrawn and Lim was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on Wednesday (July 14), a spokesman from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) told The Straits Times.
"In preparing for the retrial, the prosecution reviewed the available evidence and decided to discontinue the criminal proceedings against Lim, and to administer a conditional warning to him instead," said the AGC spokesman.

"These conditions include Lim not re-offending within a 36-month period, as well as compensating the victim for his medical costs and the pain and suffering for his injuries."
The charge against Lim may be revived if he breaches any of these conditions.
Lim was accused of paying a middleman, Ong Hock Chye, to recruit thugs to attack Mr Koh in April 2016.
Mr Koh was dating Lim's mistress, Ms Audrey Chen Ying Fang, 29.

Lim, a married man with three children, had provided for Ms Chen financially from late 2014 till May 2017. She won the inaugural Miss Mermaid pageant in 2016.
Lim's nephew, Ron Lim, beat Mr Koh up on April 8, 2016, fracturing his nose.
Mr Koh was later attacked on April 30 by hired thugs, who slashed his face with a penknife.
His attackers have all been dealt with.

Ron Lim, who was sentenced in 2018 to three years' jail and four strokes of the cane, said that after the first assault, his uncle called him to look for someone to break Mr Koh's limbs because the victim was still seeing Ms Chen.
Ron Lim said he was at Ong's flat when his uncle called him. He said Ong took over the phone from him and told Lim that he knew people who would do the job.
Ron Lim said a person named Mr Edwin Cheong was also present and would be able to corroborate his testimony.
During the appeal proceedings, in response to the defence's application, the prosecution disclosed a police statement made by Mr Cheong. This statement had not been presented during the first trial, nor Mr Cheong called as a witness.
During the appeal, Justice Aedit Abdullah found that there were contradictions between Mr Cheong's statement and the court testimony given by Ron Lim who was "the essential link between the persons committing the actual assault and Lim", said the AGC spokesman.
Justice Aedit in February ordered a retrial at the State Court was needed to determine whether Lim's conviction was safe.
The prosecution on Wednesday then decided to give Lim a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.

SINGAPORE - A 24-year-old serial sex offender, who raped a former schoolmate and preyed on other victims while he was on bail, was sentenced to 14 years' jail and 15 strokes of the cane on Wednesday (Aug 4).
In sentencing the former Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) regular serviceman, a High Court judge highlighted the use of a dating app by the man's youngest victim - a 10-year-old girl he met on Tinder.
"I have no doubt that there will be general consternation that the victim... was able to access a dating app, which would have been meant for adults or at least a much older teen," said Justice Aedit Abdullah.
"The circumstances of her use of this app are not before me, but I again would trust that the matter is being looked into now, if it has not been before, by the relevant agencies and technology companies involved."
The accused cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identities of his victims, two of whom are his former secondary schoolmates.
He raped one friend in 2018 when she was drunk, and likely passed a sexually transmitted disease to her.

Three months later, while on bail, he molested another friend after tricking her into going to a hotel.
In 2019, he got a 10-year-old girl he met on Tinder to send him a nude photograph of herself.
The judge said the fact that the accused committed offences while on bail was a substantial aggravating factor.
"There is a strong degree of incorrigibility that has to be deterred and punished, overriding any leniency for a plea of guilt," he said.

The accused admitted in court that he had a sexual fetish for young girls - his search terms on pornographic websites included "rape young girls".
He pleaded guilty last week to one charge each of rape, outrage of modesty and procuring the commission of an indecent act by a child.
Three other charges - one each for sexual assault by penetration, outrage of modesty and sexual penetration of a minor - were taken into consideration.
The court heard that he met one former schoolmate for drinks on the night of June 10, 2018. The woman, then 22, trusted him as a good friend.
After she became intoxicated, he took her to his flat, where he sexually assaulted and raped her in the early hours of June 11.

When she awoke later that morning, he accompanied her to the bus stop, without telling her what he had done.
She became suspicious when she reached home, and questioned him in a text message. He eventually admitted that he had sex with her while she was unconscious.
She went to the KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where she was told to lodge a police report.
A medical report said the man likely transmitted chlamydia, a sexual disease, to the woman, who had no other sexual partners.
In September 2018, the man met another friend for drinks after he saw from her Instagram that she was having relationship problems.
At the bar, he kept touching her breast despite her telling him to stop.
He then booked a Grab car and took her to a Geylang hotel, ignoring her request to go home.
She followed him to a hotel room because he was holding on to her bag.
In the room, he tried to have sex with her, but she told him to stop and he went to sleep upon realising that his attempts were futile.
She left the room at about 4am when he was asleep and lodged a police report that night.
In June 2019, he got to know a 10-year-old girl on Tinder; she told him she was 11.
They continued chatting on messaging app Telegram and when he dared her to send him a nude photo, she obliged with a photo of her exposed right breast.

His phone was seized during police investigations and it was discovered that he had sexually violated a 15-year-old girl in 2015 while they were watching a movie in the cinema.
In response to media queries, the Ministry of Defence said that following his arrest, the serviceman was suspended from all duties. "With the conclusion of the court process, the SAF has discharged him from service," it said.
The statement added: "The SAF holds its servicemen to high standards of discipline and integrity, and expects them to abide by the law. Those who commit offences will be dealt with in accordance with the law."

18 years’ jail, caning for man who raped social escort after posing as anti-vice cop

SINGAPORE - A delivery driver booked the services of a social escort and then posed as an anti-vice police officer in an attempt to get her to offer him free sex.
When she refused, Ng Yi Yao threatened the 22-year-old woman with a knife and raped her.
On Monday (Aug 23), Ng, a 33-year-old Singaporean, was sentenced to 18 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane by the High Court.
He had been found guilty in June of two counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual assault by penetration, after contesting the charges in a trial that began in March.
A fifth charge, that of impersonating a public servant, was taken into consideration.
In sentencing Ng, Justice Mavis Chionh agreed with prosecutors that there was clearly premeditation on his part.

“The accused had booked the victim’s sexual services knowing full well that he had no money to pay for these services and he was clearly intent on getting sex from her one way or another,” said the judge.
The judge said Ng was conscious of the victim’s exposed position by virtue of her line of work, and sought to exploit it.
Justice Chionh added: “Since the accused chose to claim trial and the victim had to relive the horror of the sexual assaults in court, the accused is not entitled to the sentencing discount normally given to accused persons who plead guilty.”
The court heard that on Feb 21, 2019, the woman was told by her agent to check into a room at Harbour Ville Hotel at 8.15pm and that her client would pay her $450. She was also told that she may have another client at 9pm.

The Singaporean woman, a part-time undergraduate who had a full-time job apart from her social escort work, cannot be named because of a gag order.
When she asked Ng for payment after he arrived, he identified himself as a police officer and briefly flashed what appeared to be a card holder. He also asked for her phone and identity card, and she complied.
He then took out his phone and started a voice recording, telling the woman that there was a police operation.
Ng repeatedly asked her to perform sexual acts with him but she refused.
The woman said she complied with his demands after she saw him holding a Swiss Army knife.
Ng then raped her and made her perform oral sex on him.

The woman wanted to leave after she showered, but Ng struck up a conversation with her, exchanged numbers with her and took photos of her identity card.
He also insisted on taking her home.
She called a friend and the police shortly after returning home.
Ng was arrested the next morning at a hostel in Hongkong Street where he was staying.
During his trial, he contended that the woman had consented to the sexual acts.

A man was advised by a fengshui master to have sex with a virgin. He raped his 11-year-old daughter

SINGAPORE - A Singaporean store assistant was told by a fengshui master in Malaysia that he would face a life-threatening mishap that could be averted only if he had sex with a virgin.
The fengshui master offered to help him get a virgin for RM2,000 ($650), but the man decided to have sex with his own 11-year-old daughter instead.
The man, who is now 50, was sentenced to 23 years' jail on Monday (Oct 18) after he pleaded guilty to one charge of aggravated statutory rape and one charge of aggravated sexual assault by penetration.
The offences were committed sometime between October and December 2018.
The term included additional jail time in lieu of caning, as he cannot be caned due to his age.
Justice Pang Khang Chau agreed with prosecutors that the offences were premeditated, as the man committed them following the fengshui master's advice in September 2018.

The judge noted that the man had also waited for his wife and elder daughter to leave home before preying on the victim.
Seven other charges, including six for aggravated outrage of modesty, were taken into consideration.
The man cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identity of the victim, who is now 14.
The man lived with his wife, son and two daughters in a flat with four bedrooms.

The son kept to himself in one room, while the two girls slept with their parents in two other rooms without a fixed arrangement. The remaining room was used as a study.
Sometime between October and December 2018, on a night when the man and the victim were sleeping in the master bedroom, he touched her inappropriately and told her not to tell anyone.
After this incident, she avoided sleeping alone with him.
He then found opportunities to sexually exploit the girl during the day.

One afternoon, shortly after his wife and elder daughter went grocery shopping, he went to the master bedroom where the victim was watching YouTube videos, closed the door and raped her.
The girl did not tell her mother or sister what her father did to her, as she did not want her parents to get divorced.
She was also afraid that her mother would blame her, as her mother had told her that she should not let anyone touch her.
The matter came to light when the victim's behaviour in school took a turn for the worse and she was caught for using an e-cigarette and drinking vodka.
On Aug 28, 2019, she broke down when she was questioned by her form teacher and revealed that her father had "touched" her.
The school counsellor and the Ministry of Social and Family Development were alerted, and the victim was taken to make a police report.
The court heard that the girl had repetitive thoughts of the sexual acts during her Primary School Leaving Examination.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim said in sentencing arguments: "Not only did he see his daughter as a sex object, he also saw her as a cheaper alternative instrument through which he would save himself from harm."
Defence counsel Audrey Koo said the man was truly remorseful and that he had been constantly plagued by fear over the prophesied tragedy.

Man who raped ex-girlfriend hoping to impregnate her gets 10½ years' jail and caning

SINGAPORE - A man who raped his former girlfriend of 10 years after persuading her to follow him home was sentenced to 10½ years' jail and six strokes of the cane on Monday (Nov 8).
High Court Judge Philip Jeyaretnam found that the man's act of trying to impregnate the victim so that she would have to marry him amounted to deliberate infliction of special trauma, which is an aggravating factor in sentencing.
The judge rejected the defence's argument that the victim, who was 24 at the time, has forgiven her former boyfriend as she has made numerous social media posts about him.
Justice Jeyaretnam said the posts only showed that she had mixed feelings about her former boyfriend, which was understandable given their decade-long relationship, and was in the process of working through her trauma.
He added: "If (the victim) found it in her heart to forgive you, that does not diminish the hurt you caused to her."
However, the judge gave the man a sentencing discount of three years for readily confessing and for pleading guilty, thereby sparing the victim the ordeal of testifying in a trial.

He also told the man: "It's not too late for you to change, become a better person and lead a meaningful life."
The accused, who was 26 and worked as a driver at the time of his offences in 2019, cannot be named because of a gag order to protect the identity of the victim.
He pleaded guilty last month to a charge of rape.
Five other charges were considered in sentencing - one other count of rape, one count of aggravated sexual assault by penetration, one count of criminal intimidation, one count of causing hurt and one count of mischief.

Prosecutors sought at least 13 years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane, while the defence asked for six years' jail and six strokes of the cane.
The court heard that the couple met in school in 2009 and got into a romantic relationship when he was 16 years old and she was 14. She underwent two abortions during their relationship.
On Feb 11, 2019, she broke up with him after learning that he had cheated on her.
Days later, he asked her to get back together with him. She stayed away from her usual hangouts and blocked him on messaging application WhatsApp.
However, he began communicating with her through her best friend.
Two weeks after their break-up, he called the victim and said he wanted to discuss marriage.
Two days later, he sent a threatening text message meant for the victim to her best friend, as well as a photo showing a parang on his bed.
Past midnight on Feb 27, 2019, he approached her as she was returning home and persuaded her to get onto his motorcycle.
In his room, he interrogated her at knifepoint about her sex life with her new boyfriend.
He then forced her to re-enact the activities with him, and tried to get her pregnant so that she would have no choice but to marry him.
After she left his flat, the woman called her then boyfriend and her best friend to tell them what had happened. She also called the police and the man was arrested later that day.

SINGAPORE - A man who appealed against his sentence for duping at least 11 women into having sex with him had his jail term more than doubled, from 3½ years to eight years and five months, on Wednesday (Dec 1).
De Beers Wong Tian Jun, 40, had pretended to be an agent for "sugar daddies" and told his victims, who were aged between 18 and 24, that he needed to have sex with them to assess whether he should recommend them to his wealthy clients.
In enhancing the sentence, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said Wong's culpability and the harm he caused fell at the very highest end of the spectrum for cheating.
"The appellant had procured penetrative sex from the victims, which represented one of the most grievous intrusions of bodily autonomy," said the Chief Justice.
"Not only did the appellant act with clear premeditation and subterfuge, his behaviour was simply cruel. He showed no remorse or doubt whatsoever when going about his spree of offending behaviour."
CJ Menon also rejected a psychiatric report that Wong relied on to seek a lighter sentence.

He said the report by Dr Ken Ung Eng Khean was predicated entirely on the narrative Wong had given the psychiatrist, which turned out to be "riven with falsehoods". Dr Ung had also not given any reasoning for his conclusions.
In his judgment, the Chief Justice set out a sentencing framework for cases of cheating for sex by adopting a harm-culpability matrix.
Cases involving a low level of both culpability and harm can be given a fine or up to 4½ months' jail as a starting point, while cases involving a high level of both culpability and harm can face between 27 and 36 months' jail as a starting point.
In Wong's case, CJ Menon imposed between 33 months and 36 months' jail for each charge of cheating.

Three of the sentences for cheating, together with an eight-month jail term for criminal intimidation, were ordered to run consecutively.
Wong had pleaded guilty to seven charges of cheating, two of criminal intimidation and one of making an obscene film.
Over the course of 10 months, he carried out an elaborate scam for free sex.
He created a post on online classifieds website Locanto, asking for escorts to provide sexual services to "sugar daddies" - rich older men who are willing to splurge on younger women in exchange for their company.
At least 11 women responded to his advertisement between April 2015 and January 2016.
Wong told them he had clients who could pay them between $8,000 and $20,000 a month for their services.

He even created fictitious chat conversations between himself and these "clients" to convince his victims. The truth was that he did not have any clients.
After obtaining nude photos of the women or filming his sexual acts with them, Wong threatened them with dissemination if they did not engage in sexual activity with him again.
He appealed against his original sentence imposed in April, contending that the district judge had failed to give sufficient mitigating weight to his psychiatric condition and placed undue weight on aggravating factors.
In his judgment, the Chief Justice also said he was of the view that an offence of rape could arguably have been made out on the facts of the current case.
He said the offence of cheating was broad enough to capture the acts in the current case.
"However, I also observe that the offence of cheating simpliciter did not appear to fully reflect the grievous bodily intrusion experienced by the victims on the present facts," he said.
Wong's request to defer the start of his sentence to Jan 10 next year was granted.

SINGAPORE - A man was under investigation for sexual offences involving two minors when he lured a 17-year-old girl to his home and sexually penetrated her without her consent.
On Monday (Dec 27), Ammar Bakhtiar Md Ali, now 23, was sentenced to six years and 10 months' jail with three strokes of the cane.
The Singaporean had pleaded guilty to one count each of sexually assaulting the 17-year-old victim and having sex with a 12-year girl in an unrelated incident.
Five other charges including those linked to his other victims were considered during sentencing. They cannot be named due to a gag order to protect their identities.
Ammar, who met the 12-year-old girl in 2016, invited her to his Jurong West flat in June that year to play games on his Xbox console.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Claire Poh said: "The accused's real intention of this invite was so that he could use (the girl) to satisfy his sexual desires... The accused knew that young individuals like (her tend) to look towards older individuals like himself as presenting some level of maturity, and he therefore intended to exploit (her) naivete."
When they reached the flat, Ammar took the girl to his room and they had unprotected sexual intercourse.

In February 2017, she told a counsellor about the incident, and the police were alerted.
Ammar was under investigation for sexual offences against her and another minor when he and the 17-year-old girl started messaging each other on social media the following year. On July 2, 2018, he sent her multiple messages asking to meet her.
DPP Poh told the court: "The accused's real intention was to have sex with (her) and... satisfy his lust. (The girl) was initially reluctant when the accused suggested the meeting, as she was concerned that (his) girlfriend would feel jealous."

The prosecutor added that to lure the victim out, Ammar falsely represented that his friend and the friend's girlfriend would be present at the meeting. He also claimed that he would feel "awkward" if she did not join them.
The girl met Ammar near Pioneer Mall in Jurong West at around 12.20am the next day and they met his friend, who was without his girlfriend.
The trio later went to Ammar's home where he and the friend played a game on his PlayStation console in a bedroom.
When the friend left the room, Ammar asked the girl for sex, but she rejected his advances.
Despite this, he sexually penetrated the girl without her consent and stopped only when she pushed his chest. He then chased her out of his home.

The court heard that he also wanted to ensure his sexual offence against her did not come to light.
DPP Poh said: "He sent her texts to the effect that her 'dignity' was at stake in the event that the incident was exposed, and that she should therefore keep the matter to herself and to delete all communications between them concerning the... incident."
The girl was not swayed by his words and made a police report around 11.20am that day.
Ammar's bail was set at $20,000 on Monday and he was ordered to surrender himself at the State Courts on Jan 20 next year to begin serving his sentence.

The court found Mr Kua Tee Beng, 67, could not back his claim that he had been pressured to give her lavish gifts including a $40,000 cheque and $295,000 to help buy a condominium unit.
Good luck convincing the judge that he was pressured into giving her gifts midway through a blowjob.

SINGAPORE — A 47-year-old man was jailed 10 months on Thursday (Feb 10) for engaging in sex acts with a secondary school student he had met on dating website Sugarbook.
Koo Yong Bian, who was married at the time, pleaded guilty to one count of having commercial sex with a minor under 18.
The Singaporean man became acquainted with the victim, then aged 15, on Sugarbook sometime in December 2020. She cannot be named due to a court order to protect her identity.
The court heard that the man and the student continued contacting each other over messaging platform Telegram because Koo wanted to keep the chats a secret from his wife.
After communicating for several days, he offered the girl about S$300 for sexual services lasting three hours. She accepted and he then booked a room at Hotel Boss, located along Jalan Sultan, for them on Dec 9, 2020.

That afternoon, he met her at the hotel lobby and took her up to the room. He paid the girl the agreed sum and left after the session.
The court further heard that he did not check her age against any documents before this.
He was arrested on April 14 last year following information received by the authorities. Court documents did not provide more details on this.
In mitigation, Koo, who was represented by lawyer Deepansh Sharma, told the court that he has a long history of community service and that being away from his wife for an extended period of time would have a detrimental impact on her physical and mental health.
Koo also said that she has obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Those convicted of having commercial sex with a minor can be jailed for up to seven years or fined, or punished with both.

Sugarbook bills itself as a site "where romance meets finance" and aims to link up older men with younger women, with the men expected to provide financial support for their companions. It was founded by a Malaysian man.

KUALA LUMPUR – Former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Leissner’s testimony in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial in the United States turned salacious after he revealed having an affair with Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd former CEO Rohana Rozhan and the US$10 million (RM31.1 million) home he gifted her.

He alleged that he bought her a US$10 million (RM41.85 million) home in London in 2013 after she had threatened to expose his involvement with 1MDB and that the relationship was from 2003 to 2013, reported Bloomberg.
“Ms Rozhan was very upset that I was ending our relationship to be with my future wife, with Kimora,” Leissner was quoted as telling the jury, referring to his wife Kimora Lee Simmons.
“If I didn’t buy her a house, she would tell the authorities about my involvement in the 1MDB scandal. She was threatening to expose me. At the time, 2013, I was very fearful of that.”
He added that he disclosed his affair with Rohana to his then boss, former Goldman Asia head Richard Gnodde.
Leissner claimed that it was a sensitive issue because the investment bank had businesses with Astro and Gnodde told him “be careful about relationships with clients”.
“Pretty much everybody in our Southeast Asia territory knew it.”
Rohana left Astro in 2019.
Leissner is the prosecution’s star witness in the criminal trial involving former Goldman Sachs colleague Roger Ng. Leissner also pleaded guilty in 2018 to a count of conspiracy to violate US anti-bribery laws and to conspiring to launder money.
Ng is the only former Goldman banker to go on trial for his involvement in the 1MDB scandal.
In his testimony today, Leissner also dropped a bombshell revelation on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who allegedly wanted to secure jobs for his three children with Goldman.
Leissner, 52, testified that his ex-boss Lloyd Blankfein’s meeting with Najib in 2009 came with an agenda and it took place before the bank’s mega bond deals for 1MDB.
He added that he was told by Ng that Najib would be in New York to visit his children for the Thanksgiving holiday.
He alleged that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, said it would be good for Blankfein and Najib to meet.
Leissner said after a meeting with Najib, Ng said the Malaysian prime minister wanted jobs for his children at Goldman.
“Just met PM’s three children at his apartment, am with Jho at his apartment,” Leissner read to the jury from an email.
He said Ng added: “Meeting him again tomorrow and will work at getting his three children to join Goldman Sachs.”
Leissner then said he did not express any qualms as “the prime minister of Malaysia was potentially great business for us, so I felt having the children of the prime minister work for us would potentially be seen, not just for the prime minister”, but “all others in Asia would take notice”.
He added that he later helped get Najib’s daughter a job at TPG, which is an American investment company.
Leissner last week told the court that it was “greed and ambition” that motivated his involvement in the 1MDB deal.
He said bringing 1MDB’s multi-million-dollar deal with the United States investment bank “instantaneously made us heroes”.
He alleged that Ng had in 2008 fostered a relationship with fugitive Low, who was then the intermediary between Goldman and 1MDB, Reuters reported.
It later led to Goldman selling US$6.5 billion in bonds for 1MDB and making US$600 million in fees.
“My greed and ambition took over,” Leissner was quoted as saying, and that the repercussions had destroyed his life.
“The main focus for me was whatever it takes to get these transactions done for Goldman Sachs.”
Leissner also testified that Low made a list of people in Malaysia and Abu Dhabi who needed to be bribed to ensure that the 1MDB plan was approved. Among the names in his testimony were Najib and United Arab Emirates Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Mansour.
A day before, Alex Cohen testified in Ng’s trial. Cohen is the chief financial officer of Strategic Group, an entertainment and marketing company that organised parties for Low.
He told the court that millions of dollars drained in the 1MDB scandal were spent by Low on luxurious parties and celebrity guests.
According to Bloomberg, Cohen testified that Low had provided Strategic Group with at least 25% of its profits in 2012, paying US$5,000 just for the talent scouting for one particular event – all with the roughly US$700 million allegedly sourced by Low from 1MDB.
The jury in Brooklyn, New York, also heard about invoices from a Las Vegas party for Low, where expenses such as food, beverages, “talent” and “top quality models” added up to more than US$3.6 million.
Ng, 49, is facing accusations of pocketing millions of dollars in kickbacks in the 1MDB deal, with allegations of money laundering and violating anti-bribery laws.
Low was charged in the US in 2018; however, he remains a fugitive. – The Vibes, February 23, 2022

Jail and caning for ex-security officer who raped drunk colleague, boasted to friend that he 'did it' 3 times

SINGAPORE - A security officer carried a female colleague up to his flat and raped her multiple times, after she passed out drunk while they were hanging out at the void deck of his block.
The 24-year-old Malaysian sent a photo of the unconscious woman to his friend and boasted that he "did it" with her three times.
The victim, a 27-year-old Malaysian, was so traumatised by the incident that she was warded at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for three months.
On Friday (March 11), the man was sentenced to 15 years' jail and ordered to be given 20 strokes of the cane by the High Court after he pleaded guilty to one charge each of rape, sexual assault by penetration, and distribution of a voyeuristic image.
He also pleaded guilty to two other charges of insulting the modesty of a different victim, a 39-year-old Singaporean woman, by surreptitiously taking videos of her while she was showering.
He did this when he stayed at her home.
Another 20 charges, including two for raping the younger woman and 18 for filming the older woman, were taken into consideration.

He cannot be named owing to a gag order to protect the identities of the victims. The Straits Times understands that he has lost his job.
The High Court heard that the accused and rape victim got to know each other at work and occasionally chatted on messaging apps after he asked for her number.
On the night of June 21, 2020, they met at the void deck of his flat, sitting at a round table as they chatted and had alcoholic drinks.

After she passed out, he recorded six video clips on his mobile phone of her in a severely intoxicated state and covered in her own vomit.
He carried her back to his flat, pulled down her underwear and took a photo of her, which he sent to his friend.
Between 1am and 9.40am on June 22, he raped her three times and carried out other sexual acts, as she remained unconscious.
After the third rape, he sent a message to his friend to say that he "did it" three times.
The woman was shocked when she woke up to find herself naked with the accused next to her on the bed.

When she asked if he had done anything to her, he showed her the videos of her in a drunken state at the void deck.
As she looked at the videos, she realised that he had sent a photo of her to his friend.
Mortified, she deleted the videos, photos and messages, as well as her contact number, from his phone.
She got dressed and left the flat, accompanied by the man, who booked a Grab ride for her.
Initially, she did not lodge a police report as she felt scared and insecure, and was unfamiliar with the investigative procedures in Singapore.
A month later, on July 21, she told a friend, a 40-year-old Singaporean man, who called the police. The accused was arrested on the same day.
Following the incident, she was admitted to the IMH with suicidal ideation and diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Yang Ziliang told the court that the accused's actions continue to have an impact on the woman.
"She feels that all men are bad, and fears that she 'will not be able to find someone who truly loves (her) in the future because nobody can accept somebody with a past like this'," he said, citing her victim impact statement.
In the course of police investigations, a total of 18 videos and nine photos of the other victim, taken between Nov 27, 2018 and Dec 18, 2019, were found on the accused's phone.
He admitted that he filmed her via a hole at the bottom of a toilet door and had sent the videos to the same friend.
His assigned lawyer, Mr Gregory Fong, noted that he was a young offender and was remorseful for his actions.
Mr Fong said his client had a crush on the victim and committed the offences at the spur of the moment as he had also consumed alcohol.
"His judgment was clouded when he crossed the Rubicon and decided to give in to his lust," added the lawyer.

SINGAPORE - A man who sexually abused four of his five daughters over a 14-year period, raping three of them, was sentenced to a jail term of 33 years and two months, and given 24 strokes of the cane on Friday (March 18).
In sentencing the 45-year-old man, a High Court judge said this was one of the worst cases of rape and sexual assault, and that the accused's actions are "deeply horrific and horrendously reprehensible".
"The accused destroyed the cherished values of the victims' sanctuary and turned their home into a living hell," said Justice Tan Siong Thye in a nearly 70-page judgment.
"He had caused unimaginable misery and untold torment to them for several years."
The man began sexually assaulting his oldest daughter in 2004 when she was six or seven years old, extending his abuse to his other daughters over the years.
Only the youngest of the five girls was spared.
The trail of abuse was uncovered in November 2018 when one daughter finally made a police report, accompanied by an older sister.

The girl, now 16, is the youngest of the four abused girls.
The man, a freelance instructor for children's adventure camp, also has two sons. He cannot be named to protect the identity of his children.
Last week, he pleaded guilty to seven charges for offences committed against his fourth daughter when she was aged 12 to 13.

The charges comprise three for aggravated rape, one for aggravated sexual assault by penetration, two for aggravated outrage of modesty and one for ill-treatment of a child.
Another 26 charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
The sexual to abuse usually took place at night when the man's wife was out working.

"The accused exploited and took advantage of these opportunities to sexually assault the victim without detection," said Justice Tan, adding that this was an aggravating factor.
The man's use of sexual grooming and threats to satisfy his sexual perversion were also factors that justified severe punishment, the judge added.
When the girl was in Primary 5, the man tried to normalise the idea of her having sex with him by showing her a pornographic video, which he claimed involved a girl her age having sex with her father.
In 2018, the man threatened to stop her from schooling if she did not have sex with him every month.
Justice Tan also considered the sexual offences committed against the three other abused girls. The number and nature of these charges reinforce the need for specific deterrence, he said.
He noted that after the two girls left the flat to make a police report, the man went to three police stations to look for them.
When he could not find them, he searched online for ways to pass a lie detector test.
Justice Tan also raised an incident in 2015 when one daughter reported the man to the police but he told his wife to persuade the girl to lie to the police.
"He managed to get away with the sexual offences in 2015 and he hoped he could do the same in 2018. The accused was prepared to lie to the police and maintained his innocence until recently when... he realised the avalanche of evidence against him."
The man's guilty plea did not warrant a sentencing discount as it did not appear to be motivated by genuine remorse, said the judge.
Justice Tan also called the way the man had in September 2018 deprived three daughters and his younger son of food for five days over the "small matter" of uncompleted chores as "deplorable".
The man threw away all the food in the house, including all the raw and frozen food in the refrigerator, going to the extent of binding bottles of water in the fridge with rubber bands so he would know if the children tampered with them.
The children survived on tap water and the occasional meal smuggled to them by other family members.
Justice Tan also considered the charges against the man for physically abusing his wife and three children.
The man caned his wife on the arm in 2007, stepped on the back of one daughter in 2012, kicked another daughter in the stomach in 2014, and punched his younger son in the eye in 2016.
"These charges, when seen in totality, paint a disturbing and tragic picture of the physical domination the accused enjoyed over the rest of his family," said the judge.
Justice Tan added that the victims' impact statements made clear that the sexual abuse has left them with lasting trauma and painful wounds.

The youngest victim expressed how there were times when she blamed herself that her siblings no longer had a father.
"Despite her family's support, she could not help but feel that she was fighting this emotional battle alone," said the judge.
The sister who had accompanied her to the police station said that she remained silent about the abuse as she was afraid to break up her family.
Another sister fears ever having a father figure in their home again.

Jail for man who got money, sexual favours from immigration offender by claiming to be ICA officer

SINGAPORE - Kelvin Lim Chee Wee lied when he told a masseuse that he was an Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officer and knew others who work there.
The masseuse, a Chinese national, was facing immigration-related matters. Lim said he could help her and in return, he got sexual favours and money from her.
Lim, 44, was sentenced to 23 weeks' jail in court on Thursday (March 24) and fined $6,500 after he pleaded guilty to six charges, including five under the Prevention of Corruption Act and one under the Massage Establishments Act.
The masseuse, Cheng Wenjuan, who had also allegedly given an actual ICA officer a sexual bribe, had her charges abated following her death last August.
Deputy Public Prosecutor David Menon told the court on Thursday that some time in or around March 2019, Lim, a Singaporean, became acquainted with Cheng and became her regular customer.
They mainly communicated via the WeChat mobile messaging app.
On May 11, 2019, Cheng told the accused that she had legal problems and had been arrested for vice-related offences. She expected that she would be repatriated imminently.

So Lim lied about his ICA connection and told Cheng he could help her get a Special Pass (SP), which allows a foreigner to stay in Singapore for specific purposes, such as helping in investigations.
The pair then had sex for the first time. While Lim previously paid for massages and sexual services from Cheng , he did not offer to pay her on this occasion.
Lim then told Cheng that it would cost her $5,000 to pay an ICA officer to issue her an SP.

She agreed to pay up before getting the pass only after Lim told her the ICA officer wanted the money upfront. Lim collected money from her the following week.
On May 20, 2019, Lim drove to Cheng's home to collect $3,000 from her .
He visited her again on May 28, 2019 and the pair had sex. Cheng did not ask for payment because she believed Lim was helping her.
In mid-July 2019, Cheng told Lim she wanted to be arrested and Lim said he could arrange this but it would now cost $15,000 to get an SP. He added that he needed more money to arrange for suitable accommodation for her arrest.
DPP Menon told the court: "The increasing cost angered Cheng, and she told the accused to pay for her sexual services for which he had previously not paid. (Lim) threatened to stop assisting Cheng with her SP, at which point Cheng relented."
Lim later said Cheng could pay $8,000 and she agreed. After collecting some of the money from Cheng on June 10, 2019, he spent it on his personal expenses and to repay debts.
On July 14, 2019, Cheng gave Lim more money to help her friend who was arrested for vice-related offences. Lim also spent that money on himself.
Court documents do not reveal how he was caught.

SINGAPORE: Two weeks after meeting on a dating app, Johnson Hong Siang Yeu invited a 17-year-old girl to his place to learn how to play the guitar.
The girl had come to see Hong as a trusted friend by that time, confiding in him about her past relationships, family troubles and personal struggles.
Hong, then 20, in turn told her that she was "just like a little sister" to him and would often comfort her.
However, on the night she was at his home in May 2020, he raped her on his bed while urging her to "trust him".
Hong, now 22, was sentenced to seven years' jail and four strokes of the cane on Tuesday (Apr 19) after pleading guilty to one charge of rape.
He was also fined S$2,000 after admitting to violating COVID-19 rules to meet the victim without a legitimate purpose.
The identity of the victim, now 19, is protected by gag order. She was a student when the incident happened.

"KEEP THIS BETWEEN OURSELVES"

The court heard that Hong and the victim met on a dating app towards the end of April 2020.
However, the victim told Hong at the outset that she was not looking to date anyone she met on the platform.
He acknowledged her wishes and they built a rapport, chatting on a daily basis.
On May 9, 2020, Hong invited the victim to his place, offering to teach her how to play the guitar.
She agreed to meet him at a staircase landing outside his flat rather than inside, as she wanted to keep things friendly between them, and arrived at around 1.20am.
About an hour later, Hong suggested moving to his bedroom to use the air-conditioner. The victim agreed as she was feeling sweaty.
In the room, she sat at a corner of Hong's mattress to use her phone, while he used his laptop.
At some point, Hong offered to give the victim a back massage, which lasted for a few minutes. After the massage, the victim fell asleep on the mattress.
"The sight of the victim sound asleep aroused the accused, who proceeded to hug her from the back while she was asleep," stated court documents.
He then pulled her shorts aside and molested her. The victim jolted awake and told Hong to stop while shoving his hand away.
Hong did not stop and instead sexually assaulted her for 10 to 15 seconds while covering her mouth and telling her to "trust him". He then proceeded to rape her.
Throughout this ordeal, the victim struggled to push Hong off as he was pressed against her, and cried and pleaded with him to stop.
Hong stopped after a few minutes and apologised to the victim. She continued to cry while facing a wall, before leaving his bedroom to use the toilet.
She eventually left Hong's flat at around 4.15am in a private-hire vehicle.
Hong apologised to the victim in a text message at about 5am that morning. He told her: "Hope we can keep this between ourselves and forget about this."
The victim told a friend that she had been raped by Hong but was hesitant about making a police report as she was afraid of how her parents would react.
She eventually made a police report on May 11, 2020 at the insistence of her friend.

ABUSE OF TRUST

Deputy Public Prosecutors Yeow Xuan and Nicholas Lim sought the sentence that was imposed for the rape offence, citing Hong's abuse of the trust placed in him by the victim.
The victim had laid down clear boundaries between herself and Hong on multiple occasions, said the prosecutors.
"She placed significant trust in the accused's assurances that they were just friends and was willing to follow him to his home on the night of the offences despite her clear reservations," they said.
"In turn, he utterly betrayed the faith reposed in him by making advances on her while she was asleep."
They also sought a S$3,500 fine for his breach of COVID-19 rules in place at the time.
Defence lawyer Joshua Tong asked for six years' jail and three strokes of the cane for the rape offence, and a S$1,000 fine for the COVID-19 rules violation.
He argued that there was no abuse of trust as Hong and the victim had only known each other for two weeks at the time of the offence.
He contended that it was an "overstatement" to say that they were friends, and that the victim had not laid clear boundaries with Hong.
"While the crime was serious, this was a momentary lapse and a moment of folly," said Mr Tong, asking the court to exercise mercy as his client was a young, first-time offender.
In sentencing, District Judge Kok Shu En agreed with the prosecution that there was an abuse of trust.
While the victim had not known Hong for long, she trusted him enough to go to his house to learn to play the guitar and even fall asleep there, said the judge.
Those found guilty of rape can be jailed for up to 20 years and fined or caned.
The penalty for violating COVID-19 control orders is up to six months' jail, a fine of up to S$10,000 or both.
