SINGAPORE - A 35-year-old man who force-fed vodka to a 13-year-old girl and then brutally raped and sexually assaulted her over a harrowing two hours was sentenced to 28 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane on Thursday (March 19).

Muhammad Alif Ab Rahim had pleaded guilty to one count of rape of a minor and two counts of sexual assault by penetration of a minor for the attacks, which took place between about 9pm and 11pm on Oct 24, 2017, at Kallang Riverside Park.

Alif, who started his criminal career at the age of 21, has been jailed five times between 2007 and 2014 for theft, cheating, robbery, criminal breach of trust and sexual assault by penetration.

The victim, who is now 16, cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

The High Court heard that she struggled and cried throughout her ordeal, but Alif hit her, repeatedly blocked her when she tried to escape, and covered her mouth to muffle her shouts. He also threatened her twice after the attack.

Voice messages sent by the victim to her friends and an aunt after the rapes, in which she cried as she told them she had been raped by "uncle", were also played in court.

The court heard that the victim was friends with the son of Alif's girlfriend at the time. Alif occasionally stayed over at his girlfriend's house and the victim called him "uncle".

On the evening of Oct 24, 2017, the victim went to deliver cigarettes to a friend, and along the way, decided to go to the Kallang Riverside Park.
She ran into Alif, who suggested that they buy drinks and go to the park to chat.

They sat at the end of the jetty in front of the river and Alif took out a bottle of vodka from his bag. He asked if she wanted some, but she declined and drank cola instead.

After drinking a few cups of vodka mixed with cola, Alif leaned forward and kissed the victim.

Shocked, she moved away but he snatched her phone, sat on top of her and lifted her shirt and molested her.

She shouted for help several times, but no one was around to hear her cries as they were in a secluded part of the park.

As the victim shouted, he put the bottle of vodka to her mouth, pressed her cheeks to force open her mouth, and poured the alcohol in.

When the victim tried to run, he pushed her against the fence and blocked her escape. He then dragged her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

He pressed the victim down by the wrists, slapped her face when she resisted and covered her mouth with his hands.

He continued to force-feed her vodka as he raped and sodomised her and forced her to perform oral sex on him.

After her ordeal ended, Alif warned the victim not to tell anyone about what happened before he left.

The victim, who was in pain, eventually managed to crawl from the jetty to a grass patch near the toilet.

She then sent voice messages via WhatsApp to her aunt, a friend and the friend's mother telling them she had been raped.

However, she was too dizzy from the pain and alcohol and was unable to give them clear directions.

As she lay on the ground, the victim hoped to be rescued by a passer-by but instead, Alif returned on a shared bicycle and again threatened her not to tell anybody before leaving again.

The victim's friends went to the park to search for her and ran into Alif, who asked them if they had seen the girl's mother before he cycled away.

Soon after, the victim's friends heard her cries and found her.

She told them she had been raped by Alif. The victim's grandparents also arrived at the park and called the police.

Alif returned to the park with his girlfriend and met the victim, her friends and grandparents.

The girl managed to point out Alif as her assailant before she collapsed.

He denied raping the victim and threatened the victim's grandmother that if anything happened to him, he would harm the victim's family and that he was "a wanted man".

Alif fled the scene when he saw the two police officers approaching.

The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Hours later, at about 5am on Oct 25, 2017, police officers arrived at the home of Alif's girlfriend, but he locked himself in the bedroom. The officers broke in and found him hiding inside a cupboard.

He lied to the police, saying that he was looking for his girlfriend at the park and never met the victim that night. However, a year later while in remand, he changed his story, claiming that the victim came on to him and asked him to have sex with her.

His semen was found on the victim's body and clothes.

The girl suffered bruises on her wrists and abrasions to her elbow and knees and back.

She was assessed to have symptoms of trauma and received counselling to help her overcome her fear of strangers.

"The accused's sexual assaults have left an indelible scar in her mind," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Gregory Gan.

Alif's lawyer, Ms Gloria James, told the court that he was assaulted while he was in prison.

Justice See Kee Oon said it is not clear how the assaults had any direct connection to the current case. Even if it did, it was not a relevant consideration to reduce Alif's sentences.

SINGAPORE - A girl who had been molested by her father at least once a week finally stood up to him at the age of 15 after suffering in silence for years.

Instead of being contrite, the man punished her by locking her out of their flat for hours almost every day that month until her mother came home from work.

When the abuse escalated to rape, the girl was so afraid of being punished that she simply covered her face with a pillow and silently endured the assaults.

On Monday (Feb 22), the 44-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane in a case described by the High Court judge as "sickening".
Justice Dedar Singh Gill said the sentence reflects the court's strong disapproval of the man's "vile and wanton acts committed by the accused against his long-suffering biological daughter".

The man pleaded guilty to three rape charges, with another 24 charges for sexual offences taken into consideration.

The former food delivery rider cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identity of the victim, who is now 17 years old.

The court heard that the father of four started sexually abusing the victim, his only daughter, when she was nine years old.

At least once a week between 2013 and 2018, he would enter her room while she was sleeping and touch her under her clothes.

On May 11, 2018, the girl ran away from home due to stress caused by the molestation, her mid-year examinations and a quarrel with her mother.

A missing-persons report was lodged, and she returned home the next day.

The abuse stopped for a while but resumed in December 2018 when he touched her breasts.

After she told him that she was not comfortable and walked away, he punished her by making her stand facing the wall for an hour.

For most of the rest of the month, he locked her out of the flat for hours. When the girl's mother asked why she was outside, he replied that he was punishing the girl for not doing housework.

From January 2019 onwards, the man progressed to rape and other penetrative sex acts while they were alone after she returned home from school.

She did not dare tell anyone about the abuse and was also worried that her family would be broken up if she did.

On July 31, 2019, she stayed out after school to avoid being at home alone with him but was scolded by her mother for coming home late.

The next day, three of her schoolmates noticed that she was moody and pestered her to tell them what was wrong.

She was initially reluctant to share but eventually revealed, through tears, that her father had sexually abused her.

The schoolmates then reported the matter to the girl's form teacher and the matter was reported to the police on the same day.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Stephanie Koh said the punishment the man meted out had a "profound impact" on the victim and illustrated her vulnerability as a teenager who lived under the authority of her parents.

The DPP said: "This manipulative and victim-blaming behaviour is a clear reflection of the accused's lack of remorse and his willingness to abuse his authority over the victim."

Defence counsel Favian Kang said his client knows there was no excuse for what he had done. Letters from the man's wife, second son and the victim were submitted to the court.

KLANG - A court in Malaysia has sentenced a man to 1,050 years in jail with 24 strokes of the cane for raping his stepdaughter.

The jobless man had pleaded guilty to raping the 12-year-old girl 105 times over two years from Jan 5, 2018 to Feb 24 last year, Bernama news agency reported.

The accused was slapped with 10 years in jail for each rape charge, which took a total of almost five hours to be read out in court on Wednesday (Jan 27).

Sessions Court judge M. Kunasundary said the offence had a severely detrimental effect on the child, according to Bernama.

"I hope you will repent while in prison. You should not have committed a violent act and although the punishment is minimum, the court feels this is sufficient by taking into account the number of charges," the judge said, as reported by Bernama.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Qistini Qamarul Abrar had urged the court to impose a heavy custodial sentence and the maximum strokes of the cane.

"As her stepfather, he should have been responsible for protecting the victim but instead, he destroyed her self-worth. His action will cause life-long trauma to the victim," Bernama reported, quoting the prosecutor.

Cleaner jailed 33 years for sexually assaulting all 3 daughters

SINGAPORE - A 55-year-old man who sexually assaulted all three of his biological daughters at various points in time over a period of 14 years was sentenced to 33 years in jail on Tuesday (March 9).

The man, who worked as a cleaner, began targeting each daughter when they turned 11 or 12 years old.

He cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identities of his daughters, who are now between 13 and 26 years old.

As a result of years of abuse, the two oldest daughters have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. The second daughter also has major depressive disorder and will need psychological therapy in the future.

"The accused had caused significant physical and psychological harm to all three of his daughters and severely violated their trust in their own father," said High Court judge See Kee Oon during sentencing.

The man was diagnosed with paedophilic disorder and was found to have a high risk of reoffending. He cannot be caned as he is over 50.

Apart from the three victims, the man also has a son, now 17.

The court heard that the man started sexually assaulting the eldest daughter from when she was around 11 years old in 2005, after watching pornography.
The abuse persisted until she turned 16 or 17 some time in 2010 or 2011.

Around this time, his second daughter turned 12 and she became his next victim.

For nine years, from 2010 to 2019, he raped her, made her perform oral sex on him and carried out other penetrative sexual acts on her.

These assaults took place a few times a week.

He last raped her in the kitchen on the night of Oct 19, 2019, while his wife was sleeping in the living room.


Both the eldest and second daughters did not tell anyone about the sexual assaults as they were scared of their father, who had warned them against doing so.
On the night of Oct 22, 2019, the man gestured for his youngest daughter, then 12, to go over to him.

The girl knew he wanted to have sex with her, having seen him sexually assault her second sister and from her own experience of being molested by him in June 2018 when she was 11.

As she did not want to be raped, she shook her head and started crying.

"The accused became angry and frustrated but did not pursue the matter further," Deputy Public Prosecutor Norine Tan told the court.

The next day, the youngest daughter confided in her friends, who advised her to tell her teacher. The teacher then took her to lodge a police report.

The offences against her sisters came to light after they were interviewed by the police.

On Tuesday, the man pleaded guilty to four charges - one for rape of the eldest daughter, two for rape of the second daughter and one for asking his youngest daughter to have sex with him.

Eight other charges were taken into account during sentencing.

Prosecutors sought a total sentence of at least 35 years and four months' jail, which included a one-year term in lieu of caning.

SINGAPORE - A married businessman took a beauty contestant as his mistress for almost two years and showered her with gifts including a luxury car, but when she found herself a younger lover, he flew into a rage.

According to court documents, Lim Hong Liang, 55, twice ordered his mistress' lover to be attacked.

Over the two attacks, Mr Joshua Koh Kian Yong suffered several injuries including fractures to his nose and lacerations to his face.

A scar on the now 35-year-old's mouth is likely to remain a permanent feature.

On Tuesday (April 2), District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt found Lim, the owner of SNL Logistics, guilty of taking part in a seven-person conspiracy to cause grievous hurt to Mr Koh by using a weapon.

The judge also found a middleman linked to the attack - mover Ong Hock Chye, 48 - guilty of the same offence. The pair were convicted after a 10-day trial.

Lim was smitten with Ms Audrey Chen Ying Fang, 27, after they met in 2014. Although he was married with three children, the pair became involved in an intimate relationship.

He gave her a job at his logistics firm. As an administrative executive, she was paid about $2,000 a month but the court heard that she did not have to turn up for work.
The car he gave her - a white Mercedes Benz - carried the plate "1991", her birth year.

She used his credit cards and paid for her needs with it.

Lim even allowed her to live rent-free in a unit he owned at The Parc condominium in West Coast Walk, renovating it to her preferred "Hello Kitty" theme.

But he set her a condition - she was his and only his.

In their submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutors Tan Wen Hsien and Stephanie Koh said: "In return, Lim expected her to be faithful to him, and not to 'fool around outside'."

But she did. In March 2016, Ms Chen started dating Mr Koh, a banquet waiter, and announced their relationship on social media.

When Lim discovered Ms Chen, who was crowned Miss Mermaid 2016, was seeing Mr Koh and taking him to the apartment, he paid $5,000 to hitmen to scar Mr Koh's face.

About a month after they started dating, Lim's older son and Lim's nephew Ron Lim De Mai, 26, turned up at The Parc condominium.

The first attack took place on April 8. The two men barged into the apartment Ms Chen and Mr Koh were in and Ron Lim attacked him relentlessly, punching and kicking him for about 15 minutes.

As he lay there injured, they took photos of Mr Koh with their phones.

At Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Mr Koh was found to have fractures to his nose.

After the attack, Lim, who was then in China for a kidney transplant, sent Ms Chen voice messages in Mandarin. He accused her of bringing a man to the apartment while he was overseas.

But the young lovers were not deterred and continued seeing each other. However, they were found out again.

On April 30 at 1am, while the two were having supper at Huay Kwang Thai Kitchen in Townshend Road near Little India, Mr Koh was ambushed.

He was punched in the head and as he tried to run, he was slashed with a penknife on his arm and face.

Ms Chen testified that she saw a gaping wound on Mr Koh's mouth. Although he was treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, that scar is now likely to be permanent.
The DPPs said: "The disfiguring wound would be a poignant reminder to the victim to stay away from (Lim's) mistress."

According to court documents, Lim wanted his nephew to "teach Joshua a lesson" and it was Ron Lim who roped in Ong to recruit others to carry out the task.
The DPPs stated: "At Ong's suggestion, the plan evolved into slashing Joshua's face, which Lim agreed to.

"At all stages, Lim and Ong were actively aware of the manner and extent of the eventual attack on Joshua."

The slasher - Nur Muhammad Irwan Mohd Ngat, 30 - was dealt with earlier in court along with the other attackers, which included former technician Mohammad Amin Aman, 47; Juhari Ab Karim, 34; and Ron Lim.

They were each sentenced to between 15 months and 14½ years' jail.

Of these four men, only Juhari, who had punched Mr Koh but did not slash him, was spared the cane.

Irwan, who was also found guilty of drug trafficking, received the harshest sentence which also included 16 strokes of the cane.

His then fiancee - Nur Atika Fauziana Sherhan, 22 - who was also involved in the second attack, was sentenced earlier to reformative training.

On Tuesday, the businessman was offered bail of $10,000 while Ong's bail was set at $20,000. They are slated to be sentenced on May 17.

Offenders convicted of causing grievous hurt with a weapon can be jailed for life or jailed for up to 15 years with a fine or caning.

Lim cannot be caned as he is over 50 years old.

SINGAPORE - A night club manager, who raped an unconscious woman at a chalet after being egged on by his friends, was sentenced to 12 years and three months' jail and 10 strokes of the cane on Monday (March 29).

Yap Chun Chieh, 41, had earlier pleaded guilty to one charge of rape and one charge of outrage of modesty.

He was among a group of men who had taken the victim, then 24 years old, to a chalet at D'Resort @ Downtown East on the morning of Sept 17, 2018.

The victim, who was severely intoxicated, was raped by Yap and sexually assaulted by Tay Boon Huat, 29, while Gan Soon Chai, 35, furtively filmed the attack on his phone.
Tay had earlier been sentenced to 10 years and three months' jail and five strokes of the cane, while Gan was sentenced to 15 months' jail and a fine of $20,800.

In sentencing Yap on Monday, Justice See Kee Oon noted that his offence was "opportunistic". Yap was emboldened by the knowledge that the victim was so intoxicated that she was in no position to resist his advances, the judge added.

He rejected as a mitigating factor that Yap was easily influenced by his peers.

The defence had argued that Yap had a mild neurocognitive disorder due to a bout of meningoencephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, in his youth which impaired his judgment and decision-making process.

Justice See said Yap was able to function and adapt and was able to understand the nature and consequences of his conduct.

The court earlier heard that Tay booked the chalet for his friends from Sept 16 to 17, 2018.

After midnight on Sept 17, four of them travelled to Club V5 Tycoon at Ming Arcade in Cuscaden Road.

The woman arrived at about 3.35am with her friends, after having had drinks at another club, and proceeded to have more alcohol.

At about 6am, one of the men, Yong Chun Hong, 32, spent about 15 minutes alone with her in the toilet. He then passed her over to Yap, telling him to send her home by taxi.

Both Yong and Yap worked at the club as managers-cum-bouncers.

On the drive back to the chalet, Yong and his friends spotted Yap with the woman. Yong invited Yap to join them at the chalet and pulled the woman by her arm into the car.

During the journey, Tay touched her breasts, and Yap joined in.

At the chalet, Yong and Tay told Yap words to the effect of "the woman is already lying here and you still are not having sex with her. What are you waiting for?". Yap then raped the woman.

At the same time, Tay laid down near the victim's head and forced himself on her.

At about 9am, Yap helped the woman get dressed and took her home in a taxi, while the other men remained at the chalet.

When they reached her block of flats, the woman was asleep and Yap decided to take her to the nearest hotel.

During the hotel stay, he touched her breasts. At about 7pm that day, the woman was startled to wake up next to a stranger. She paid for the room after Yap told her it cost $70. They then went their separate ways.

Back home, the woman knew that something had happened to her but did not know what to do.

That night, she went back to the club to talk to a friend about the incident and recognised Yap.

Days later, she approached Yap, who apologised for having sex with her.

She eventually told her mother about what had happened to her and made a police report.

SINGAPORE - A man who started sexually grooming a teenager when she was 13 years old has been jailed for two years and 10 months.

Nick Chong Seng Cheong, 24, had sex with the girl on multiple occasions and also paid her for it.

He pleaded guilty on Monday (April 12) to three counts of sexual penetration of a minor under 14 and one count of possessing obscene films.

Seven charges of sexual penetration of a minor were taken into consideration by District Judge Janet Wang during sentencing.

The girl cannot be named due to a gag order to protect her identity.

Court documents state that Chong was a project lead at an engineering company when he committed the offences.

He became acquainted with the victim through chat application ChatIW in October 2017.

They subsequently communicated via WhatsApp, and Chong would ask the girl to send him photographs of her private parts.

He also sent her photographs of his genitals and videos of himself performing a sex act.

Chong later suggested that they become "friends with benefit", to which the girl agreed, on the condition that she would be paid whenever they engaged in sexual activities.

By that time, the girl had informed Chong that she was 13, the court heard.

They met up to engage in sexual activities almost every month, from October 2017 to February 2019.

These meetings took place either in toilets for the handicapped at various shopping malls or at hotels booked by Chong.

On each occasion after the first, Chong paid the victim between $30 and $50, depending on the sexual activity involved.

He knew the girl wanted the money to buy games, among other things, the court heard.

Chong told the girl to bring a change of clothes each time they met at a hotel, explaining that she would be questioned by the hotel staff if she turned up in school attire.

He would also instruct her to act like his sister to avoid arousing the suspicion of the staff.

The court heard that Chong took videos of them having sex together in the hotels, which he sent to the victim.

His offences came to light after the girl told the police in March 2019 that she had sex with several men.
Two mobile phones were later seized from Chong during police investigations, and were found to contain 48 obscene video clips.

In her written submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Emily Koh urged the court to jail him for at least three years. She said Chong had sought to exploit the girl for his sexual gratification despite being aware of her young age.

In sentencing Chong on Monday, District Judge Wang noted that there was no dispute that there was a "considerable measure of sexual grooming" in this case.

For each offence of sexually penetrating a minor under 14, Chong could have been jailed for up to 20 years. He could also have been fined or caned.

He could also have been jailed for up to six months, or fined up to $200,000, or both, for possessing obscene films.

SINGAPORE - A man who pretended to be an agent for rich "sugar daddies" and duped at least 11 women into having sex with him was sentenced on Tuesday (April 20) to 3½ years' jail and fined $20,000.
De Beers Wong Tian Jun, 39, pleaded guilty last month to 10 charges, including cheating and criminal intimidation. Another 26 charges were considered in sentencing.
District Judge John Ng described Wong as a multiple offender who had deceived women for his own sexual gratification.
"An elaborate and well-executed plan over 10 months makes such offences particularly deserving of punishment," the judge said.
In 2015, Wong looked through sex workers' advertisements online and realised he could not afford to engage their services.
The Singaporean then hatched a plan to create a post on online classifieds website Locanto, asking for paid escorts to provide sexual services to "sugar daddies" - rich older men who are willing to splurge on younger women in exchange for their company.

At least 11 women aged between 18 and 24 years responded to his advertisement between April 2015 and January 2016.
Wong told them he had clients who could pay them between $8,000 and $20,000 a month for their services. The truth was he did not have any clients and lied so he could have sex with women without needing to pay them.
After obtaining nude photos of the women or filming his sex acts with them, Wong would threaten them with dissemination if they did not engage in sexual activity with him again.
One of the victims, a 24-year-old woman, met Wong at a Hotel 81 branch on Oct 18, 2015.

When she expressed reluctance to send him nude photos of herself, he told her: "All my girls take skimpy pics so you will be on a losing end." She then sent him two photos.
He then lied that he needed to have sex with her so he could rate her performance to his clients. She agreed to meet him after he said a potential client had paid his last sugar babe $16,000.
The woman started having anxiety attacks after this incident. She was later diagnosed with adjustment disorder with anxiety.
She begged Wong to delete her photographs on Jan 30, 2016. The conman then said he would do so only if she agreed to "provide sexual services to him".
When the woman told him she was doing him a "favour" by not going to the police, Wong replied: "Now I have to pass your photos to my friends; in case anything happens to me, they will use the photos as they wish."

Terrified, the woman lodged a police report on Feb 3, 2016.
Deputy Public Prosecutors Cheng Yuxi and Tan Pei Wei called for at least 2½ years' jail for Wong's "carefully thought-out scheme", highlighting the premeditation involved in his offences against multiple victims over 10 months.
Wong's lawyer Genesa Tan said he had been diagnosed with adjustment disorder that contributed to his offences, and that he is remorseful.
Wong will begin serving his sentence in two weeks' time. In the meantime, he remains out on bail.

SINGAPORE - A 44-year-old man who showed child pornography to his daughter and sexually assaulted her over 7½ years was sentenced to 28 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane on Monday (April 26).
The permanent resident from a European country had pleaded guilty in the High Court last month to three counts of rape.
He admitted that he sexually assaulted the victim when she was between three and seven years of age and started raping her by the time she was nine.
He had also preyed on his daughter's best friend, then nine years old, when she came over to play.
The man, who worked here as a product manager, is now divorced. He cannot not be named due to a gag order to protect the victims' identities.
Another 19 charges were considered in sentencing, including four charges of rape and three of sexual assault by penetration.

Justice Mavis Chionh noted that, with backdating and the usual one-third remission for good behaviour, he will be 61 years old when he is released.
The court heard earlier that the abuse started at the end of 2011 in the family's rented condominium.
Prosecutors told the court that the girl became afraid of showering alone after she saw people drowning on TV, which led to the man showering with her.
He began sexually exploiting her, and realised he was a paedophile and there was "no turning back".

After the family moved to another condominium, the abuse became more frequent.
While the girl's mother was at work or out of the country, he showed child pornography to the girl and carried out various sexual acts on her.
The girl said "no" when he wanted to have sex with her, but he told her to try for a few minutes.
She did not tell anyone about the assaults as she did not want her parents to divorce.

When the girl's best friend, a foreigner who lived in the same condominium, came over, he kissed the friend on the lips and told her to keep it a secret.
Once, he molested both girls at the same time, touching each victim with one hand.
Eventually, the friend stopped coming over.
The friend was in her home country in June 2019 when she was asked to confess her sins before taking her first communion as a Catholic. She revealed that the man had behaved inappropriately with her in 2017.
Her parents took her to make a police report when they returned to Singapore.
On July 1, 2019, the police went to the man's home and, after speaking to his daughter, who was alone at home, found out about the sexual abuse. He was later arrested.
The man estimated that he had sex with his daughter 10 to 20 times. He also said he had forced her to perform oral sex on him more often than he raped her.
While he was diagnosed with paedophilic disorder by the Institute of Mental Health, the IMH said the disorder had "no substantive contributory link" to his criminal liability as his cognitive functioning and his capability of breaking the law to act on his desires were not significantly impaired.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, finalised the biggest divorce settlement in history on Thursday (April 4), leaving him with 75 per cent of their stock in the tech giant and giving her nearly US$36 billion (S$48 billion) in shares.
MacKenzie Bezos said she would give all of her stake in The Washington Post and the space exploration firm Blue Origin to her husband - the world's richest man - as well as voting control of her remaining Amazon stock.
Jeff Bezos, 55, and MacKenzie, 48, a novelist, married in 1993 and have four children. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in their Seattle garage in 1994 and turned it into a colossus that dominates online retail.
In a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Amazon, which has a market capitalisation of some US$890 billion, said MacKenzie Bezos will control 4 per cent of the company's outstanding common stock.
At Amazon's current share price that would be worth some US$35.6 billion.
According to Forbes magazine, the divorce settlement makes MacKenzie Bezos the third wealthiest woman in the world after L'Oreal heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers and Walmart's Alice Walton.

Jeff Bezos, who now owns 12 per cent of Amazon, remains the world's richest man and the largest shareholder in the company with an estimated fortune of US$110 billion, Forbes said, ahead of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett.
Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced their separation in January and posted Twitter messages on Thursday revealing the divorce settlement.

"Grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support from each other and everyone who reached out to us in kindness," MacKenzie Bezos wrote.
"Happy to be giving him all of my interests in the Washington Post and Blue Origin, and 75% of our Amazon stock plus voting control of my shares to support his continued contributions with the teams of these incredible companies," MacKenzie Bezos said.

"Excited about my own plans. Grateful for the past as I look forward to what comes next," she said.

Jeff Bezos, in a Twitter message of his own, said his now ex-wife has been "an extraordinary partner, ally, and mother."
"She is resourceful and brilliant and loving, and as our futures unroll, I know I'll always be learning from her," he said.

"I'm grateful for her support and for her kindness in this process and am very much looking forward to our new relationship as friends and co-parents," Bezos added.
Bezos has largely kept his personal life private during his years steering Amazon.
But it was thrust into the spotlight with the announcement in January that he and his wife were divorcing after 25 years of marriage and the revelation by the National Enquirer that he had been having an affair with a former news anchor, Lauren Sanchez.
When the National Enquirer, controlled by President Donald Trump's ally David Pecker, threatened to release lurid, intimate pictures of Bezos and Sanchez, Bezos fought back by releasing the details of his exchanges publicly.
"Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I've decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten," Bezos wrote in a blog post.
A lawyer for the National Enquirer denied that the supermarket tabloid had tried to extort and blackmail the Amazon founder.
Trump has been a frequent critic of the Post, which Bezos purchased in 2013, claiming that the newspaper is biased against him and calling it the "Amazon Washington Post." Amazon shares were down 0.28 per cent at US$1,815.69 in New York on Thursday shortly before the close of trading.

WASHINGTON (BLOOMBERG, REUTERS) - Bill and Melinda Gates, two of the most influential philanthropists in the world, said on Monday (May 3) that they are divorcing after 27 years of marriage.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the two said in a statement posted on Twitter.
“We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.
“We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life,” their statement said.
In a joint petition for dissolution of marriage filed in King County Superior Court in Seattle, the couple stated: “The marriage is irretrievably broken.”
They said they had reached an agreement on how to divide their assets, though the financial details of the decision were not immediately clear.

The divorce filing, which states that the couple have no minor children, comes after the youngest of their three children is believed to have recently turned 18. The spouses asked the court to approve their agreement on division of assets but did not disclose details.

Fortune at stake
Mr Gates, 65, co-founder of Microsoft Corp, is the world’s fourth-richest person.
His wife Melinda, 56, is a former Microsoft manager who has become an outspoken advocate on global health and equality for women in her role co-running the foundation.
They will continue to work together at the massive philanthropic foundation they built to improve global health, combat climate change and bolster US education, the pair said in the statement.

Launched in 2000, the non-profit Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ranks as the largest private philanthropic foundation in the United States and one of the world’s biggest, with net assets of US$43.3 billion (S$57.7 billion) at the end of 2019, according to the latest full-year financials shown on its website.
From 1994 to 2018, Mr Gates and his wife provided gifts of more than US$36 billion for the Seattle-based foundation, the website said.
Last year, investor Warren Buffett reported donating more than US$2 billion of stock from his Berkshire Hathaway Inc to the Gates Foundation as part of previously announced plans to give away his entire fortune before his death.
The Gates Foundation has focused on public health, education and climate. Its initiatives include supporting development of coronavirus vaccines, diagnostic tests and medical treatments, as well as support for public radio and the manufacture of solar-powered toilets.

Bombshell split
The couple’s divorce is the second bombshell split among the uppermost ranks of the world’s richest people in recent years, following the 2019 separation announcement of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Ms MacKenzie Scott.
At stake is the world’s fourth-biggest fortune, currently valued at US$145.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
The Gates’ wealth could prove more complex to carve up than the Bezos fortune, which was largely concentrated in Amazon stock.
Mr Gates’ net worth originated with Microsoft but shares of the software-maker now probably make up less than 20 per cent of his assets. He has shifted much of his stake into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation over the years and his exact stake has not been disclosed since he left Microsoft’s board last year.
Mr Gates’ biggest asset is Cascade Investment, a holding company he created with the proceeds of Microsoft stock sales and dividends that is run by Mr Michael Larson. Through Cascade, Gates has interests in real estate, energy and hospitality, as well as stakes in dozens of public companies, including Canadian National Railway and Deere & Co.
Divorce attorney Monica Mazzei, a partner at Sideman & Bancroft LLP in San Francisco, said the big question concerning the couple’s foundation and family office is to what extent they plan on working together going forward.
“Even in the most amicable divorces I have seen, the preference has been to split the foundation in two so that there is more autonomy and less intermingling,” she said. The same principle applies to family offices, where the investments could be divvied up into two separate pots.

The pair live in Washington, which is a community property state. That means that anything acquired during a marriage is considered equally owned by both partners, explained Ms Mazzei.
It could not be determined if the two signed a pre-nuptial agreement and it is unclear how the divorce will impact their philanthropy. The Gates Foundation did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The two met in New York in the 1980s, early into Mrs Gates’ time at Microsoft.
When deciding whether to marry her, Mr Gates made a pros and cons list on a whiteboard - Mrs Gates related how she walked into his bedroom to find him tabulating various factors in the Netflix documentary series Inside Bill’s Brain.
The couple’s philanthropy has always been deeply rooted in their relationship and marriage. The day before they wed in Hawaii, Mr Gates’ mother, Mary, who had been trying to convince him to dramatically increase his charity, gave his wife-to-be a letter that closed with the words: “From those to whom much is given, much is expected.”
Mr Gates’ mother died several months later.
But it was on a trip to Africa during their engagement that the couple decided they would become serious philanthropists.

“We fell in love with everything we saw but it’s really not at all trite to say that we really fell in love with the people,” Mrs Gates said at a Salesforce event in 2016. “It just started us on this series of questions of sort of saying to ourselves, ‘What is going on here?’”
Later on in the trip, the couple filled out a marriage questionnaire to make sure they had the same values. That was when they decided “the vast majority of resources from Microsoft would go back to society”, Mrs Gates said. “It was an easy discussion. We just thought it would be later in our lives when we got to do it.”
Through their foundation, the couple has given away more than US$50 billion.

Details of the divorce appeared in a 256-page indictment for a bribery case involving Mr Ecclestone, stating that Ms Radic, 60, had been paying Mr Ecclestone US$100 million a year from her trust fund since the divorce, The Telegraph reported in 2014. The duration of the payments was not known, according to the indictment.
Mr Ecclestone married 40-year-old Brazilian Fabiana Flosi, his third wife, in 2012.

SINGAPORE - A sports coach got a 12-year-old girl to send him her nude photographs, which he later used to dupe her into engaging in various sexual acts with him by creating a fictitious persona he called the "China man".
Leonard Kannan, 47, told the girl that the "China man" had found his mobile phone containing her photos and had threatened to leak them unless she complied with his demands for more nude photos and sex videos.
Kannan also manipulated the victim into getting her best friend to fall for the same ruse. He tricked both girls into having "threesomes" with him and got them to perform sexual acts on each other.
He even got the first victim to rope in a boy from her school to engage in sex acts with her.
Prosecutors told the High Court on Tuesday (May 25) that the two girls "found themselves helplessly entangled in the accused's diabolical web as his sex slaves for a period of three years".
Kannan was sentenced to 31 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to one charge of aggravated rape of the first victim when she was 13, and one charge of rape of the second victim when she was 14.

Another 20 charges, including eight for rape and sexual assault by penetration, were taken into consideration.
In sentencing, Justice See Kee Oon said the offences were predatory, premeditated and a brazen exploitation of the victims' naivety.
Kannan had befriended the first victim at the end of 2011 when he was engaged by a primary school to conduct activities for graduating pupils.
Within a few weeks, he suggested that they exchange nude photos of themselves. She sent him hers, but when he did not send her his, she stopped messaging him.

In 2013, when the girl was in secondary school, Kannan re-established contact, claiming that he had received threats from a "China man" who found her nude photos.
Kannan told the girl that all she had to do was to send him more nude photographs and sex videos, which he will forward to the "China man" to satisfy him.
He then used the same ruse to get the girl to engage in sexual acts with him.
She began to regard him as her boyfriend and talked to him about her life.
Kannan then convinced her that the "China man" also wanted nude photographs of her best friend. The girl relayed the demands to her friend, who also came to believe the ruse.
Kannan later tricked the two girls into having threesomes.
In 2015, he masqueraded as two other men and sent messages to the first victim on social media platforms, asking for nude photos and sex videos.
She felt stressed from the harassment and decided to go to the police. Both girls made a police report on March 15, 2016. Kannan was arrested the next day.
The two girls were later assessed at the Child Guidance Clinic.
The first victim said she had nightmares of people finding out about the matter which resulted in her suffering from insomnia, feeling depressed and considering suicide.
The second victim said she felt frustrated and helpless and became fearful of people from China as she was worried that they would harm her or her family.
