The Whip Will Not Be Lifted!!

LHL already said that he supports the recommendations but many feel that the cut is not deep enough. my sense is that it will be cut further at the next review

you think greedy PAP MPs agree to 3% pay cut ??? why else do they need the whip...

you are a cock, they have no conscience and they will all vote against it since they wan more pay, not pay cut...

cockanathan

They all want to hide under the whip...after what Grace Fu kenna, no one will publicly want to say they think they are underpaid. All will take the safe route by saying, " Whip in place, no choice..have to accept what they give me. But will donate as much as possible to charity and grassroots lah".

Then go and buy BMW cos Lexus too boring to drive!

good point...but it is up to the voters in the next GE to vote wisely

What are whips for in SG's parliament? The ultimate power is the Old Man. He is the ultimate whip

It would be a political coup if WP could announce that it is lifting its party whip for the vote and "appeal" to the speaker to allow PAP to vote on their conscience too.

Don't think 6 WP MPs got any problem in casting a unanimous vote, compared to 80+ greedy dogs sitting on the other side.

There are no whips or political positions in the opposition here unlike the UK

Don't get distracted by this "whip" bullshit. They purposely will say that whip will not be lifted so PAP MPs can boldly go around to thei relatives, supporters and voters can claim that they are forced into it.

If the whip is lifted in this case, then I worry. Most PAP MPs may vote against it in favor of a lower quantum of cut.

In S'pore context, the Parliament's Whip is a superfluous or redundant post. It is there only in name. Why? Because the real WHIP is still around. LKY is the WHIP for all intent and purposes. He only need to make known what his views are on any parliamentary matter, the rest will fall in place naturally. So lifted or unlifted, it ain't going to make any difference to the outcome. The decision has already been made for them. The debate that will take place on Monday is nothing but wayang again. "Wayanging" is a core competence of the PAP as practise (over the last 50 years) makes perfect.

Spot on. If anyone had doubts, it was made crystal clear when Viswa Sadasivam in his capacity as NMP thought he was in the UK where freedom of speech and altruism was common place. I remember how shocked the establishment was. No one expected it. Viswa even came to the stage where he actually hinted that his rice bowl was at stake. Naturally after this term he made it clear that he would reapply for the posts.

Viswa was shortlisted for PAP MP and sent to one of two nurseries - SPH Research Unit. He did not clear the final hurdle and despite being a poster during NS and Reservist, Feedback unit, high profile etc and even offering his company to the Intelligence Services, got truly fucked. Not only that, old man not only removed his innards, he also went more than skin deep by telling Parliament that Malayalees which Viswa is one as a race are noted for being non-team players. Only other persons that has seen this sort of venom from the old man were JBJ and Ryan Goh.

You hit the nail on the head..if you are right, does LHL deserve to govern SG? Are the pap MPs worth anything as they are controlled by an 88yr old senile man?

that could be the reason.

that wld make the MP look slightly better but the cost to pap can outweigh the gains

The WP can taunt and challenge the PAP to lift the whip if the PAP is so confident that the review is right and allow their MPs to vote with a conscience. that is the real test for the pap

If they can't lift the whip then lift the skirt of Grace and see how much she's worth to be raised.

hahaha......it is amazing all this herd instinct and singing the same old tune.
if u really know the old man as all the wise pple claimed so, u should know that if he is still carrying the whip and running the show, this review committee "wayang" exercise would never have happened in the first place.......it is just not the old man's style.

Not true. The Old Fart is too seasoned a politician and he knows what the political costs would be to PAP if it was to ignore the people's expressed anger with the out-of-the-world salaries. He also has too much political acumen to know that if the PAP was to simply announce a certain percentage of cuts, then it will shows up that all the methods and formulae used in the past were not robust such that it can be so easily be fixed. Hence a review committee was the most expedient way to go about this chore politically to try to give this exercise more credence. This sly old fox knows when to be flexible to depart from his usual style if he thinks that would help PAP gain political ground. After all, it's only the style as in substance, he had already made his decision that the ministers' pay must continue to be peg to top earners.

Even if the Whip is lifted.Who wants to bet with me how many of PAP MPs will vote against PAP?....I bet not more than 2.Why?Just look at the line up of PAP MPs,....PAP selection process had already chosen the lot who will sell their mothers for money.People who are not in politics to serve the people consciously..How can we expect some thing which is non existence from this lot?Hey,we are talking about politicians here.Politicians by nature are self serving.

That is why the only check and balance in a parliamentary system is the existence of multi parties.Like a debate. One proposes and other disposes. But once put to vote;it's expected that all party men to close ranks. It's an unwritten code of conduct .Parliament is not like a 1 man 1 vote system ; out of which the majority votes wins.Chaos will result under such a system. How can a ruling party is expected to table anything without knowing how it's own party men will vote in the parliament?

Whip is usually imposed if a party senses they lack of Quorum or on a do and die issue like say,a no confidence motion. As on 20 July 1961 when PAP was left hanging onto a slim one-seat majority- with 26 PAP MPs to the opposition's 25. All it takes is 1 to topple the government.Just as it happened in Malaysia's Perak state assembly.Perak state was won by the opposition in GE 2008.UMNO unseated them by buying over just one of the DAP assembly woman .Hence, the purpose of the whip in a parliament is not as you guys speculate it to be.

But,I agree with some posters here that PAP uses it's whip for other ignoble reasons. To give an excuse to the general public that PAP MPs voted for because their hands were tied by the whip.

In fact every PAP MP can lie to their constituents that they are consciously against such obscene pay packet. But the whip prevented them voting against it....and we won't know whether they are lying or not.

I bet you none. Look at even the religious ones. GY-left to hang and dry. TCJ--haha, friendly PAP person? Immediate entry general (as always) co-opted into CEC straight away.

Not even those with the highest morals will dare.
