The Singapore political patrionage system, most parliamentarians are somewhat the equivalent of being co-opted into parliament by the back door
Even minister chan chun seng implicitly , in parliamentary debate, acknowledged the great honour of entering by coat-tails (the back door of parliament ) by saying that it would be unfair to these coat-tail MPs [I rephrase his speech here], that if a by-election were conducted for the entire GRC to replace the minority candidate who quit to run for presidency (Hallimah) or was sacked by party/ parliament (Raeesah Khan) because entering parliament on coat tails is more important than any electorate democratic mandate and more important than minority representation in parliament (note taken, minority parliament representation is more an excuse than the real purpose of the GRC system).
Nowadays, in order to increase the importance the of coat tails political patronage system, a majority of coat tails GRC MPs from a Parliamentary committee to select a few successful candidates under the coat tails NMP system, so even more PAP political cronies can also be (secretly) included in this political sponsorship/ patronage system vz the NMP system, as long as these ex PAP cadres tactically quit their PAP membership so that they look good to the coat tails GRC MP majority formed selection committee that they are PAP affiliated in heart but not name.
Everything smells like top down PAP orchestrated even if they make every attempt to obsfucate it. If the PM LHL knows one has an EMA (like Tan Chuan Jin as speaker) all the better because that allows the patron to implicitly blackmail the parliamentarian at anytime and destroy his political career, if he isn't sufficiently partial towards party interests but in a judiciously discreet manner, since by definition, the role of speaker of parliament is for the ruling parties most morally outstanding member (besides the PM/ sec gen), because he is supposed to be able to maintain the impartiality of Parliamentary discussions and not be compromised by either an illicit extramarital affair (EMA) with a fellow parliamentarian or worse, the Prime Minister's knowledge of such an and both speaker and PM(/PAP sec general) keep it a mutual secret so they can have a mutual understanding to be most subtle about it whilst occupying the highest of political positions, whilst managing more and more delicate and sensitive political issues like questioning the integrity of opposition parliamentarians as well as ensuring that the coat tails premise upon which NMPs are admitted are sufficiently made less obvious to political analyst and media reporters.
