One thing good about Amsterdam is you can even bring your bicycle inside the train ( I mean those big ah pek bike and not foldable ones ) there's a area inside the train to park your bike . It's really a bicycle country .

Yes, there is a rise in leisure cyclists, and they have been taken care of (with park connectors, etc.) But it's those who cycle for transportation who need to be disciplined the most, not least because they are hazards to other road users.

Right now, neither TP or LTA can do anything about them because these agencies know that they have failed in providing adequate infrastructure for them. So, their solution appears to pretend they are not there. I've seen a cyclist riding against the flow of traffic along East Coast Rd in front of an LTA enforcer who purposely looked the other way. I asked the enforcer why he didn't do anything and he said he didn't see.

Once the infrastructure is in place, I would expect TP and LTA to enforce cycling rules with vigour.

And yes, I would consider riding to work when the infrastructure is in place. Summer in Taiwan and Amsterdam can be as hot if not hotter than in Singapore. And of course, it would be unsafe to ride when there is a typhoon or snow.

We must accept that in order to pack 7 million on this rock, certain personal liberties have to be sacrificed. The majority of the working class live in high density housing. If a tenth of residents took to cycling as a means of commuting to work, then we have a problem. How do we ease peak hour traffic for cyclists? How many more free parking bicycle stands must we build? All these money have to come from somewhere...

Fortunately we need not worry unduely. The local weather is simply too harsh for all but the most hardcore cyclist to even consider commuting to work in the CBD. Oh, and please do not try to board buses or mrt with your ah pek bicycles. There is barely enough standing space for people and you did not pay extra fares for your equipment!

Perhaps you are asking for a major rethink of the way our roads and pavements are being designed. Personally i would not sacrifice the big trees and little grass strips for a seperate bicycle track. If the GOS decides to cave in to public pressure, please widen the pedestrain pavement by half a metre or so to accomodate both cyclists and pedestrains. That is as far as i am willing to compromise for your personal liberties.

Couple of point to address.

1) Circa 1982, the political leaders caught the golf bug and 3 things came out of it. Firstly senior civil servants were encouraged and each Min and Stat had corporate memberships purchased for them. Secondly they managed to go on Golf Club building spree on this "tiny rock" and lastly as it reached fever pitch, the civil service changed its rules allow half day leave ostensibly for the benefit of everyone but the primary driver was that senior people could not be accommodated on weekends and you can cover 18 holes in half a day easily. All this in land scarce Singapore.

2) A lot of the cycles that you see on the road range from $1K to $25K.

3) What I saw in Golf I am now seeing in cycling. We are talking about senior and elites taking up cycling. MNC chiefs, Temasek bigwigs. etc. There is small shop diagonally opposite the Nasi Lemak stall and on a Saturday morning you can see the Elites and their bikes. And I am talking about a group who are in their 50s and 60s. And they all millionaires.

4) I have been to the US and some European cities and can see cycle specific infrastructure coming up. I was in London last Sept and saw the city full of cycles including the blue branded ones with so many docking stations. Even tourists now have taken to cycling around the city using credit cards to rent bikes from self service docks. Was there a few years before that and the change is surprising. As you knob, London traffic is heavy and streets are narrow. Surprised to find alot of cycle tracks alongside roads. Some how they managed to do it. They also have special super bikeways marked blue compared to the regular bike tracks marked green.

Looks like the Dutch are showing the World.
