Lim Chin Siong denied he was a communist. Do not put the red hat on someone's head if you are not sure of the facts.

Anyone read the declassified documents relating to Lim?

http://www.yoursdp.org/index.php/news/singapore/997-has-singapore-been-cheated

When I was in jail in 2006, I re-read the book Comet In Our Sky, a compilation of essays written by friends and associates of the late Lim Chin Siong. I will assume most of you here know Lim Chin Siong and will not endeavour to go into detail how he was seen by the majority of Singaporeans as the natural leader of our then fledgling republic in the 1950s and 60s, other than to say that his charisma and compassionate style of leadership won the hearts and minds of many.

The book includes a chapter written by Professor of Southeast Asian Studies, Tim Harper, from Cambridge University. Professor Harper documented his research after poring through bundles of de-classified papers, memos, letters, etc. written by Britsh colonial officials during the turbulent period leading up to Singapore's independence.

The picture that emerged was one not quite the story that I heard and read growing up. In a nutshell, the Professor's account was that the people of Singapore wanted Lim Chin Siong as their leader but the British would not allow it and wanted Lee Kuan Yew instead.

So we have two versions of what happened: one written written by a disinterested, third-party academic and based on verifiable de-classifed papers, and the other by Lee Kuan Yew who still has vested personal interests in telling these events. I do not think I would be far wrong if I say that the majority of people would look to the former for a more accurate and objective account of that part of history.

This is what I tried to do in the first part of A Nation Cheated, that is, summarise Professor Harper's research finding's.

Anyone who rationally and objectively thinks S'pore would have been better off with Lim Chin Siong as PM needs to get his/her head checked. Regardless of the Commie issue, it would appear that Lim Chin Siong was an idealist and idealists rarely if ever make for successful political leaders over the long term. It is not surprising that even Tan Wah Piow (much to his credit) was gracious enough to acknowledge that S'pore under LKY had been relatively successfull albeit with human stress factor and benign authoritarianism.

I do not why Dr Chee looks at the past and to Lim Chin Siong, when that 'battle' was long since lost and put to bed. Dr Chee should instead just concentrate on the future instead

Chin Peng has denied that LCS was ever a member of his party.

Dear Porifio

It might have to do with how CSJ wanted to use "Comet in the Sky" to attack LKY's public assertion about "integrity in his political life." I for one have no doubts that whilst LKY was not a saint neither was LCS. The problem in painting LKY as an evil machivellian back stabbing unprincipled politician is that as a contrast LCS must be seen as a romantic democratic hero who would have bought democracy free speech and development to Singapore.

Me I rather see it as LCS and LKY fighting each other to the political death and doing the dirty to each other with LKY winning and luckily for SG at that.

Perceptions. LCS did not know how to show that he was not communist, even if he was or was not a true communist. The Geopolitical factor was important. if Lim became PM, Singapore would have been another Vietnam. Cold War history tells you so.

I agree that there are too many "what if's" to consider about...

But to say that LCS would make a lousy leader based on the fact that he was an idealist also makes a weak arguement.

The truth remains that he was geniunely fighting for the people of Singapore and was ultimately fucked over by his former compatriots.

His life was unfairly ruined in a high stakes game of politics and he should be recognised for his contributions to nation building.

But reality has proven that under your owner, Peesai has ceased to be a nation, but some Familee's heirloom, and the people have become serfs. most of whom can't wait to emigrate. Only the Familee's running dogs would still insisting on smearing LCS against the facts. But then again, since when can running dogs think?

Dr Chee appears to be fixated on these past figures from Lim Chin Siong to Chia Thye Poh to Zaid Zahari to Tan Wah Piow to even Vincent Cheng.

Pointless really as all these were PAST political battles, appears to make no dent with the vast majority of Singaporeans, in fact I would go so far as to say that Dr Chee should even forget about LKY altogether and confine LKY to the dinnosaur political pile instead. Dr Chee should just concentrate on the future unless he wants to become a political historian.

Pleaes show me a successful politician over the long term who is/was also a true idealist.

As for Lim Chin Siong and the other socialist lefties of the 50s/60s/70s, yes I agree their place in history should be acknowledged. They were afterall true nationalists and patriots at heart. Dr Kevin Tan appears to have started the ball rolling in this regard when he included a section on Lim Chin Siong in his book.

I agree that there are too many "what if's" to consider about...

If there is the need for justice for these tortured Singaporeans, how about charging the old Western leaders for crimes in Vietnam?

Like I said before, past is past and consigned to the history books, the present and future is what really matters. Even LKY should be ignored as he appears to represent the past.
