Evidence that HDB residents are not owners of their flats

The tenants will have to restore the apt to its condition before they shifted in, or lose their deposit.
I heard some are quite smart to run away instead before the agent or owner can chase them back for deposit. All kinds of interesting stunts.

The truth is that HDB dwellers are only lessees (tenants) while the real owner is the HDB who is the lessor (landlord). Genuine owners cannot be evicted from their own property.
What can they do right? Just graduate a few years after Uni and married how many can afford a condo as a first property?

nobody bothers .... its just speculation .... U stay inside and sell later to pass it on the next person .... :whistling:

Unless these young couples have wealthy parents, their first and perhaps only residential property will be a HDB flat. Nothing kills the aspirations of young S'poreans more than the knowledge that they will be consigned to a HDB flat and public transport from birth to death i.e. upward mobility in terms of upgrading their lifestyle will not be possible unless they are among the top 15% of income earners.

I am perhaps more fortunate to only have to deal with CECA tenants who have to be repeatedly reminded to pay their monthly rent and service the aircon, leave the unit with minor damage, ruin the stove and make all kinds of excuses why they do not have to reimburse us for the repairs i.e. unavoidable wear and tear.

Think most sinkies are more worried about failing ill, losing their jobs due to retrenchment and restructure over lifestyle choices (unless those who work in govt sector who never see any of these outside)

Because Sg condos are so ex these days and offer so little for so much and most condo owners I know are double income earners.

My wife and I managed to upgrade to a condo in our early 30s in the year 2000, but I wonder how old a typical PME couple are in order to upgrade these days w/o parental support.

Different times different policies. Year 2000 is not too far from the Asian economic crisis is 1998 where house prices was an all time low.

I remember a classmate who used to live his grandma in an old walked up apartment in 2008, nobody wanna buy it

It’s 2025, prices are an all high and don’t think salary for fresh grad has increase that much from 2000 to 2025 compared to the huge increase in property prices from 2000 to 2025.

Over the past 20 years, SG property prices have seen substantial increases. From 2000 to 2023, HDB resale prices surged by a staggering 157%, and private residential property prices rose by 158% over the same period. While Q1 and Q2 in 2025 show some moderation in price growth, prices remain at elevated levels. Land scarcity and an increasing population owing to immigration have boosted property demand, so it is a problem of the PAP's own making.

no more bomb shelter in new condo and hdb flat? that’s the most stupid shenanigan with an epic fail.
Like what does a bomb shelter actually do when some Sinkies use it as a store room to put all kinds of knick knacks in it?

That is just your opinion and your limited perspective on how a young couple should live. Maybe you think these couples are going the routine of scripted life that you perceived without creativity to ramp up their life.

Any young working couple would have certain aspirations to upgrade their standard of living. Most of those who lack the ability and drive to do so often use the excuse that the 5Cs are not what they aspire to obtain.

Your perspective is only within the boundaries of sinkieland, that is not real life.

After PM Lawrence Wong claimed that the S'pore Dream is no longer solely about material success, but now includes fulfilment, meaning and purpose in people’s lives, he was heavily criticised online. PM Wong was told that material possessions that S'poreans typically aspire to own like a condo, car, cash, credit card and country club membership are no less relevant today than they were to locals decades ago. If the politicians no longer aspire to the 5Cs, they should work for a modest salary, stay in HDB flats and rely on public transport. These greedy politicians must do as they say in order to lead by example.

Why do you presume that I follow what the PM says? I have the 5Cs because I worked hard, planned well and struck when the iron was hot like deciding to upgrade out of the HDB heartland in the year 2000. Those of my former HDB neighbours who were afraid to take the plunge and waited, are still staying there now; they acknowledged that they missed the boat.
