Japanese companies are not that aggressive in their setup and expansion in China until only recently, especially in the automotive industries, where the Germans had been the longest standing instead. the Japanese were smart. they annexed Senkaku on Jan 1895. Qing dynasty ceded Taiwan and surrounding islands to Japan on April 1895. on paper, Senkaku got nothing to do with the annexation of Taiwan by Japan.

It is China that has been unreasonable. Senkaku has been under the Japanese control since 1895 and China has never claimed it.

It was only till the 70s that natural resources were found near the islands that PRC and ROC laid claim to it.

The islands do belong to Japan, since it was owned by a Japanese businessman and he has willingly rented it to the Japanese government. The claims of China are weak, using ancient history is not going to legitimize their claims.

Likewise, Dokdo belongs to Korea. Controlled by Korea since history and garrisoned. Japan should buzz off.

So far, I find that your reasoning is very valid. Historial claims without sovereignty rights is not a valid reason to justify the actual ownership.

Just a point to note that our present day idea of nationhood and sovereignty is a very recent concept. Don't think there was such clearcut sovereignty rights if you are talking more than a century or two ago. Historical settlement before that time was therefore very important. Even Britain at one time was under the control of France for a short period and US was under several European states before their independence. Without history that said that Britain was largely independent except for a short period of time, France could claim Britain under its sovereignty. Similarly if US's independence was not recognized by all, each of those European states could claim a part the US as their territory. Europe, in fact, was a very messed up place one/ two centuries ago with several states reporting to the same monarch. For instance, Holland at one time took the English Queen as her monarch.

Perhaps a war is the only way to settle this once and for all. But it will not be a war, at most only a naval encounter as Japan has a limited armed force because of its after-war constitution. Yes business wise i know they are very shrewd but in international politics, they still behave like juveniles. If i have to give you an example by making a comparison, lets compare their driving, they've only had cars for the masses for what.. 1 generation/20 odd years & this is evident on the roads in China, anyhow kalang kabut, potong jalan type. So IMO how they perform on international politics is akin to their driving!
