IN THE midst of all the talk about creativity and vibrancy and buzz, his question came like a cry in the wilderness.

Final-year aerospace engineering student Lim Zi Rui, 23, stood up during the Nanyang Technological University Ministerial Forum last night and asked: Did Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong know many young people no longer felt a sense of ownership in Singapore?

His question was one of several posed during the dialogue with Mr Goh, which ranged far and wide over ageing issues, art, even student accommodation.

'When I was younger, I was very proud of being a Singaporean,' Mr Lim said. 'But that was about five, 10 years ago. Five years later, with all the changes in policies and the influx of foreign talent, I really don't know what I'm defending any more.'

He said he was reflecting a sentiment held by many of his men in the SAF, who had to compete with foreigners for jobs. 'I feel that there is a dilution of the Singapore spirit in youth... We don't really feel comfortable in our country any more.'

Mr Goh's reply was one of deep concern. 'This is one early sign of danger... If this is happening, it is very serious.'

He asked Mr Lim why he felt disconnected.

Mr Lim assured SM Goh that he was still keen to fight for Singapore: 'I'm still serving as an officer and I definitely would love to defend Singapore.'

However, he compared his attitude to that of the foreign friends he had. 'I tell them, this is my country. I can't just leave here whenever I want to. You can come and play and work here, but I have to stay here.'

SM Goh responded with a defence of the Government's open-door policy. 'You want to have a home. Who's going to build your HDB flat?'

'My brother got engaged, but lost his engagement because he could not afford an HDB flat,' Mr Lim countered.

'Without foreign workers in Singapore, would your hall of residence be built?' SM Goh asked. 'If we totally reject foreigners, we're going to shrink in size... I don't think Singaporeans want that. What they want is to moderate the inflow of foreigners.'

He also said Singapore had to find ways to integrate foreigners. 'There are many of them who would like to be Singaporeans, and those of them who can be integrated, make them Singaporeans, make them part of us, make them help to defend the country,' he said.

Mr Lim said that his concerns were somewhat different. 'My question was, how are we going to help the younger generation feel a sense of belonging to Singapore? I don't think it's about integrating foreigners.'

'This is your country,' SM Goh replied. 'What do you want me to do to make you feel you belong?'

'For my part, don't worry about me,' Mr Lim said. 'I will definitely do something, if I can, for Singapore. But I can tell you honestly that the sentiment on the ground is a bit different.'

'If that is prevalent among young people over here, we've got a real problem,' SM Goh said. 'If the majority feel they don't belong here, then we have a fundamental problem. Then I would ask myself: What am I doing here? Why should I be working for people who don't feel they belong over here?'

GCT misses the point.

Mr Lim is not talking about foreign construction workers.

Anyway, we have been building houses/roads/buildings etc.. since 1819 when raffles founded spore.

Mr Goh how many flats were built in 2008 and 2009? with millions of Foreign workers to build few thousands flat. Goh C T asked the wrong question, should be who build your casinoes?. Our HDB flat is as old as PAP and foreign workers came in thousands from 2007. MBT was caught off guard he stopped building HDB three room flat and build only BTO flats.

Nobody wants to 'TOTALLY reject foreign workers' as mentioned by GCT. Again, they are trying to confuse people.

Actually this Mr Lim is talking about how others are disillusioned but not himself. :p When GCT ask him, he said he will still defend the country, he will still do what is needed of a citizen. Lastly his question was how to help younger singaporeans have a sense of belonging.

This Mr Lim quite good in por lam par. He asked quite a few questions but offer no suggestion and yet he said he will do what is required of him. That means he do what is required of him but other young singaporeans do not know what is required?

Go 1 big round, talk about a problem but said this problem doesn't affect him. Actually he himself also blur.

It's pretty clear PAP is self serving, if you don't like it or feel alienated, they are asking you to fcuk off. They only work for people that are happy with them.

Then I would ask myself: What am I doing here? Why should I be working for people who don't feel they belong over here?'

Knn why they only know how to use laborers to compare. The fucking gov is skirting the issue. They know who are these group of "foreign trash" the people are discontented about. Who gives a shit about importing cheap bangalas or prc to do the menial jobs. They are more then welcum to be road sweepers and construction workers. The people are talking about foreign trash in the white collar industries. Is woody that stupid??

As usual, GCT, on behalf of PAP, dragged in transient construction workers to justify his reckless influx of PR, EP and S passes holders. The student was asking very genuine question about his job might be stolent (not by trasient workers). No wonder GCT has no clue of what is the real problems faced by the student. The problems lie with him and not the student who posed Singapaoreans question.

I am appalled after reading the article in the Straits Times today. When common folks on the ground like us understand and knew what the student meant, how could our SM misunderstood the question. 'You want to have a home. Who's going to build your HDB flat?' is a standard 30 years series answer we used to get whenever people question why we have to import more foreign workers. But to conveniently use that answer to plug a similar question from an undergrad in today's context somewhat reflects an attempt to marginalise and side-step the issue. Worst still, he is putting our SAF in bad light with this sort of answer by indirectly implying that young ocifers today lack the social intelligence and knowledge to understand the need for foreigners to build houses here. It was obvious the student was not referring to foreign construction workers in his question!

To find a solution to a problem, one needs to identify and admit the problem first. But if someone fails or refused to to see a problem a problem, then no matter how the whole world sees it a problem is never a problem to him. I am utterly disappointed by such response. :(

I have persoannly come across foreigners on student passes being advised by ICA that they can make applications for PR once they have completed their studies and get a job. Usually within 2 years.

Once the signal has been given to lift the gates on foreigners, every govt channel and org opened up the flood gates, so the whole system has been leaking like a strainer to allow in all kinds of aliens whether talented or not, as long as they are non-Malay (Malays have the highest reproduction rate and the chauvinistic PAP govt is afraid of natrional IQ dropping.)

So the PAP govt's intention is to replace the declining births of Chinese and Indians, so they opened up to PRCs and kelings from India, so it's not really about importing FTs for building flats, casinos, or IRs. The Indians will usually bring along their whole chin gang, parents/grandparents, and soak up the squeaky clean and orderly Singapore that has been built up by us.

These newcomers soak up jobs that Singaporeans can and are willing to do, but our own Sinkie business owners "sabo" us by employing them instead since they are more willing to work more and harder for less. Not uncommon to find our own Sinkie business operators grumbling to the govt about high levies and quota caps thru their connections, and even more uncommon for govt to "innovate" lobangs for these businesses to continue hiring them or circumvent the hoops and hurdles to bring in more, and doing it on the sly and quiet in order not to raise alarm bells. Now there is a howl and a groundswell from the masses, and the govt is yanking the chain in perfect kneejerk fashion.

Right. Since MBT screwed up and pulled back on building HDB flats, then why was the govt bringing in so many FTs to "build flats"? The logic does not hold. There was a shortage in the last 5 years because Mah was negligent, and Woody now says the Fts were for the flats that Mah didnt build. So where did these Fts go?
