just saw a report in CNA & it got me wondering:

an increasing aging population comes with additional requirement for healthcare personnel and support. couple that with a low birth rate, that translates to a heavier responsibility on the shoulders of the younger generation.

Japan is no stranger to the dire situation we're facing in the near future and had been developing and improving their technology on robotics & programming, much believed to be getting ready to provide sufficient support for her aging nation.

much as I believe that automation does increase efficiency, I think the human touch is still important. with that in mind, are we training enough healthcare personnel to cope with the increasing demands? a wait at the polyclinic takes approximately two hours these days. what happens when we hit 7m folks on our sunny lil' isle?

Shared single room retirement flat -> Elderly homes in JB (connected to SG by MRT) -> Palliative care -> Lawful euthanasia

Trust me. All shall be revealed before the end of this decade.

Think about it. By 2020 more than 1 in 4 Singaporeans will be over 65 years old.**

Fertility rates are not going up anytime soon. The government has to keep on mass importing a young foreigner workforce to sustain the economy.

Resources to care for the elderly will be stretched to the extreme. There will be no chance of coping.

The easiest and most efficient way is to cull the 'undesirables', i.e. low net worth, economically useless feeders. These may include the disabled, the mentally or terminally ill.

Before euthanasia is signed into law, the public will be slowly desensitized into accepting the separation of the old folks from public view by clustering them all into one location. Can't afford medical care for terminal illness? There's palliative care to make their deaths more comfortable. Rents and fees too high in Singapore? Transfer these old folks to JB. Don't want to let your parents suffer? Be filial and sign a form and let the doctor put them to sleep... like stray dogs in SPCA.

Connect the dots.

Didn't Hitler, or those great dictators does this, Mao also?. Who knows, they already have this is place quietly? to discourage those who are pregnant & gone for amio S test, not to carry on the pregnancy, if the foetus is found to be defective??

The will be a huge battle here, between the right to die & the right to be God!, there was already a mini one some while ago between a family & the hospital over th HOTA thing, remember.

Would you be doing this for your own parents, or would you want your children ( if you have any) to do this to you. One day, in the future you would be, shouting like Charton Heston Character in the movie, "Soylent Green is people" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soylent_Green

Re: dRe: healthcare in Singapore

healthcare should be done out of sinkieland.. why pay so much for sub standard care?

Thailand will be a good place for healthcare. I have never done and healthcare in sinkieland..all my dental and health screening are done in unsinkified land which is so much better.

Getting around will be a challenge for the old. Our public transport system is packed to the rafters. If you are old & feeble it will be a challenge to fight with the foreigners for a seat or even standing room. There are also many obstacles preventing movement, just take a look at the overhead crossings & how challenging it it for the old

Every few months the gov't decides to implements something new: a new bill payment system, regulations, new routing, etc that confuses many, especially the old. This ad hoc system might be fine for the young but not for the old.

Is it any wonder that so many people want to leave Spore:confused: For the young there are the promise of greener pastures out there. For the old, one is not discarded by society. Have friends in their 50's still gainfully employed in Australia & Canada. On the other hand Sporeans in their 40's are having problems getting a job.

The 60% never considered the long term costs of supporting the PAP. Now that they are getting older they are going to pay dearly for that mistake.

............ are we training enough healthcare personnel to cope with the increasing demands? ..............

I believe the intent and the resources to provide the training are there. However, do locals want to be in the healthcare services? It is considered physically and psychologically very demanding. And got to work shift.

I think S'poreans who are attracted to work in the medical field picture themselves as specialists and surgeons.

More FTs.

Cheers!

to all bros who gave their input, thank you. i guessed it's true that there's a lot to reconcile between the ideal situation & reality.

moving forward, do we really have to deposit our old folks in neighboring countries?

Not only gainly employed, some even are running business at 60's, I have friends too, over there. Over here, 35 plus, the expiry date on your label becomes today.

Old & feeble using the MRT..the baby bloomers are finding it hard to use the MRT/LRT stations, especially where they have to change from one line to another & LRT stations, too many stairs to climb..( Ok they say its good for you), they are stairway to heaven or hell, depending on these people knees & legs...:D

The answer to this question has to come from you. Would you deposit your aged parents and relatives in a neighbouring country or would you take good care of them the way they took care of you when you were young?

Fortunately I don't have to use the circle line because from what I've seen it's poorly designed. Especially the station in Bishan which is notorious. Whenever there is a problem you'll see a picture of this station. Must be curse because it runs through some burial site :p

I often visit Dhoby Ghaut to visit the Citibank branch. The underground route is really dumb, after the treadmill , you have to 1st go down & then up to reach the level where the station entrance is. I'm surprise they didn't just extend the platform allowing people to walk directly from the treadmill to the station entrance level. You can actually see the station entrance but must take the scenic route:eek:

Obviously some bureaucrat did the design work without considering the users. Too many people are isolated in their ivory towers. In the old, old days they would simply copy the design from some 1st world country. Nowadays they feel confident in putting out poor designs:rolleyes:

Many are simply moving with their parents to a 1st world country.

This however is not an option as some parents think that Spore is the promised land:o
So what to do:confused:

The so called "first world" countries are all broke. It's a downhill spiral for anyone living in one. Singapore has a better future compared to places like Australia, NZ and Canada.

boss,

of course i'll take care of them, one of the main reason why i'm still in Singapore. :p:p:p

So should everyone. The govt shouldn't have to involved in these sorts of decisions. It's a family matter.

boss,

much as everyone ought to take care of their elderly, my point here is this:
would our healthcare system be able to cope with the demands of the increased aging population?

I can't think of any country in the world where the health system is coping.

thought it was a penchant for Singapore to be Number 1 in everything right? here's one good area to start. :D:D:D

I have to disagree even if you have to pay market prices for 1st world health care it's better than what you will get in Spore. By the way I would excludes the US where the system is more screwed up than Spore. Unless you are wealthy like LKY.

Even with the budget problems there is public pressure in the 1st world to maintain some kind of standard and accessibility. I doubt that hospitals would get away with an attitude of only if you can afford it.

In Spore they would just simply open the door to let in more cheap 3rd world health care doctors with dubious qualifications. The standard for nurses is already quite low in Spore since many of the qualified nurses are leaving for the 1st world where pay is better.

standard of nurse low but will singaporeans want to bear the cost of high standard nurse? singapore healthcare workers (doc/nurse/cleaners/matcik) salary generally lower than first world. pap govt shd help hospitals to keep cost down, making hospitals pay rental for the hospital buildings and the land the buildings sit on should end.
