'Legendary Cop' Dies : Retired ASP Stephen Koh

I am still trying my best to recall what Stephen told me several years ago. I posed this question to him and got an answer but can't recall now. Lau liao. Am certain he told me about the operating room next door.

i dont remember theres a operation room next door during my time ....maybe there is . but one thing i can confirm with you ..most of them dont finish their last breakfast before going up the rope . for last dinner they have a buget of $20 for the meal .

I believe many Singaporeans do not disagree with capital punishment however I wonder how many truly agree and support it. I must admit I'm one like that, my not disagreeing does not mean I support. But if forced to make a hard choice I think I will lean towards abolishing it for 3 personal reasons:

1. If I am against a person shortening the life of another person what give me the right to shorten this person's life?

2. Justice can make mistakes and justice can be abused especially if we got kangaroos up there.

3. Life sentence is a greater punishment than sudden death.

Again I say these are just my personal views on this and in no way imposing or trying to influence anyone of you reading. Lastly coming back to the form of execution I always think lethal injections is cleaner not so messy.

100% agree with you ...you cant justify a murderer by killing him ...it makes you no different from a murderer .

Drifter, I once heard condenmed inmates are allowed to smoke while in their cells.. Is it true? During schooldays used to chill out with my school friend at his Queenstown Quarters home since his father was a ASP at Queenstown Prison.. My friend's father was at Changi during the beginning of his career.. Once told me that many of these condenmed chaps would go wobbly on the legs crying and shouting and some even had to be dragged by the Warders to the hanging room during their execution day..

I think a sweet punishment will be putting them in a cell with your pitbulls. LOL

In the case of condemned prisoners, fight will be close coz these chaps have nothing to lose. Tell them if they defeat the pitbull (not pitbulls), they will be freed. Then you will witness a battle royal.

its true that those condenmed inmates are allowed to smoke inside the cell . during visit ( we call them zoomba ) their family members and friends are allow to give them a packet of cigarette ( the packet of cigarette will be open for check and put in a small plastic bag ) .

not true that all those condenmed guys would cry and shout before being drag by warders ....i have seen some condenmed guy very steady and walk by himself to the rope ...the reason of those rumours is to let you know that even the hardcore criminal will go down on their knee..so dont follow them and do anything stupid ... its just a scare tactics .

Many others way before One Eye Dragon.

Hang the best. can help others

also.

The ones who agree to part with some organs in their bodies are almost always those who are at peace with their fate. I think that's a great way to leave this place. Allow others to benefit since those on death row have no further use of their body parts once mati.

Beaten to death by bare hands is the best. No firearms, poison or other equipment required. If that's legislated, I'd volunteer pro bono.

Let us not always link our perception of what constitutes crime with the ethical measure of the offence. I believe most of the time an action is legistrated as a crime more for practical reasons because we are social animals. Certain actions are classified as crimes attracting capital punishment because they have serious destructive impact on society. Take murder for instance. The consequence of that offence is wide reaching. Not only does the victim loses his right to live, he probably suffered serious pain from this action. His family would probably have to deal with a major change in their life and this could determine their entire future. They would probably go through life regretting why this had happened to them. Dishing out an appropriate punishment to the offender, allows the victim's family (or the victim, if it is for some lesser crime) to put this behind them and to get on with life. An eye for an eye has nothing ethical about it, it is one practical way to satisfy this societal need. The offence directly affects not only the family but society at large. If murders and killings, any violence for that matter, become rampant because disincentive is not enough, the whole society loses the sense of security. You need to go through life carrying that fear and probably taking all kinds of precautions. You lose quite a bit of your freedom. A good example is what 9-11 has done to our life, how the carefree feeling of international travel has changed because of that. Even the rubbish bins that you used to see at HDB lift lobbies, the pillar boxes at MRT stations seem to have vanished. Let's not tell ourselves that we punish the offender for some ethical reason. It is not. It is pure pragmatism. If taken to the extreme, following the ethical thinking, since the crime cannot be undone and no amount of punishment can reverse the action, all criminals should
be set free. Most people will not agree with that. I am not saying that all punishments are appropriate for the crimes committed. But these should not be based on pure ethical reasons. Otherwise, you would get, like what you get in some European prisons, where prison cells are like hotel rooms costing a lot of taxpayers' money to support. I heard from a hotelier once that a single room in a good hotel costs something like a million dollars to build and maintain. I am of the opinion that a crime is not measured by the seriousness of the action but by the seriousness of the consequences. If there are only two people on an isolated island. If one kills the other, is there any reason (or need) to punish the killer? Anyway, after the offence, he is no more a social animal.

with his employement 'privilege', he could have planted his head on a death row 'HOTA'ed inmate..

No one wanted the job. Dir Prisons then, Chua Chin Kiat asked someone to check with Stephen and latter was given an orientation. Thereafter, he accepted the part-time job. Had no 'side affects' after his first assignment. I think he was tailor made for this! Hangmen are given the afternoon off after work in the morning. If I recall rightly, it's either $500 or $800 per head. More likely 500.

I see........
