But the very idea has driven some of its members to call The Straits Times to spill the beans. The unprecedented proposal, which also calls for disciplinary action against those who speak to reporters without approval, will be discussed and voted on at its annual general meeting on Saturday. It will need a two-thirds majority vote to be passed.

<!-- story content : start --> THE Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) president, speaking in his personal capacity, has thrown his weight behind a proposal to stop the club's 5,500 members from talking to the media. However, Mr Johnny Goh, the club's president of 16 years, concedes that such a gag order would be impossible to enforce unless those who speak up reveal their true identities. 'It will be difficult for us to catch a culprit unless he is brave enough to state his name,' Mr Goh, 71, told The Straits Times yesterday. 'If not, we can only guess who it might be.'

Earlier this week, some SRC members told The Straits Times about the unprecedented proposal that will be discussed and voted on at its annual general meeting today. It needs a two-thirds majority vote to be passed. Mr Goh stressed it is a club member, Mr Terence Christopher Shepherdson, and not the management committee, who is pushing for the gag order. He said the committee as an entity is not empowered to put up resolutions. Resolutions can be put up by individual members, but they need another member to second it. Mr Shepherdson is the chairman of the management committee's games control board, who also oversees sports activities in the club.

to keep silent on club matters. This is a club where members actually pay $$$ to join.

What is it with the Spore environment that encourages despotism.
You have condo members, bosses, and now clubs who want to dictate what members can or cannot do

<!-- story content : start --> SO THEY won their freedom of speech. A proposal to stop the Singapore Recreation Club's 5,500 members from talking to the media about club matters fell through at its annual general meeting yesterday. The proposal called for disciplinary action against those who speak to the press, or circulate or publish writings about the club, its members and staff, without approval from the management committee.

The resolution was overturned by 405 to 286 votes. It needed a two-thirds majority vote to be passed. Members cheered and clapped when the result was announced yesterday evening at the Raffles City Convention Centre where the meeting was held. More than 1,100 members turned up, of whom 774 were voting members. The meeting last year was attended by 476 voting members.
