I'm not in the 0.01% band of self-proclaimed Chinese exponents. But I learned this when I was a Primary 5 student in a low SES neighborhood school.
Maybe the difference is I don't read vertically, so I was able to grasp the meaning instantly.
However, the meaning only became clearer when I encountered the opposite, just as you need darkness to fully comprehend what light really is.
為善 as in do good to others is all about 成全別人，not 彰顯自己.
When you help others, don't make them feel indebted to you. This is why you don't advertise your good deeds.
There is a saying : "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret."
