The problem with democracy in Singapore

Our generals and police commissioners have great careers by being loyal to Singapore. Why would they commit treason?

They are not loyal to Singapore. They are loyal to the Lees and the PAP. That is not the same thing. If they were truly loyal to singapore, they would have arrested the Lee/Kwa family for corruption, abuse of power, and cronyism a long time ago.

We need a people's revolution to tear the PAP build system apart and start anew.

The revolution should start from within... I would gladly welcome a more capable PAP cadre who is true to the Nation's needs. Sadly, what we have now are spine-less , parrot-like office bearer who dance and sing the their master's tune.

Thank you for illustrating the perfect example of what I am trying to say. Your's is the lazy thinking I am talking about with poor logic and failed reasoning. The lazy way is to simply say the opposition is not up to par and leave it at that, and justify voting the PAP. No analysis needed.

This is what happens to singapore opposition. They are also similarly handicapped by lawsuits, bankruptcies, jail time, intimidation, etc. Not to mention other election shenanigans like gerry mandering, one sided press coverage, short campaign period so that they are not able to get their message out to the masses, etc. There are many bright and smart singaporeans. Many have simply left or are not bothered to put up with all the threats and intimidations. And then you have idiots like you who say they are not up to par? I can tell you one think. No opposition member has ever in the history of singapore lost $40 billion of our CPF money and national reserves. The PAP cannot say the same. Who is really on par here?

How about CST and LTK? Have they been sued? CST even successfully sued PAP politicians. LTK took down a GRC despite all the handicaps.

Yes, I do acknowledge the odds stacked against opposition members. They will faced stigma and ridicule from some members of the public. Some had to sacrifice their career like Ravi Philemon who gave up his job to stand for election. WP wards have to seek permission from PAP controlled citizen consultative committee(CCC) to fund Town Council projects.

Again, you can ask "How can a black man, one of the most despised and distrusted race in the US, with no experience running anything bigger then his law firm, with no military or foreign policy experience, no experience in large scale finance and budget, not an economist by training, etc..........how can such a man run the most powerful country on earth? Surely, he is not up to par by your logic.

If Obama tried to run as an independent, do you think he will become president? Nope, he is already a member of a prominent party and was already a senator before he became president.

PAP also rotate their ministers despite having no experience in their respective ministry. A person with no specialization in IT can become a CEO of an IT company because they are paying him for his management skills and the ability to motivate people to get results.

I disagree with you that the electorate don't think at all.

The cold hard truth is that opposition is simply not up to par with the PAP.

It isn't that the electorate didn't think but rather they thought hard about it and decided that PAP is still the best choice.

ur right the problem is not with the political party anymore, its with the populace......after everything thats been said and done in the past ten years since clown lee took over.

sinkies thought long and hard and decided that the abuse and exploitation is the best for them?its like walmart workers deciding that minimum wage and zero medical benefits and health coverage and asking employees to go on state assistance or welfare because walmart is too stingy to pay them a decent wage is good for them, while walmart reaps record breaking profits and billions and billions every year, its like north korea where everybody thinks kim jong il is the greatest despite the wide spread famine and poverty and malnutrition.i mean fine, lets not make it a issue between PAP and opposition, lets not force each others rhetoric or ideology down one another's throats,do sinkies at least have the bare minimum braincells to think for themselves,to think about what PAP is doing to them,to think about what PAP is doing behind their backs, how their policies is undermining them, robbing them blind, how PAP policies is cheating sinkies of their present and future, can the daft and stupid sinkies not see what PAP is asking them to give up and their children to give up in order to fulfill whatever selfish, greedy, grandiosity, global domination,

Stupid sinkies have destroyed all oppositions in GE 2015. Oppositions are not destroyed by PAP. They are destroyed by sinkies themselves. That's how good PAP is.

Yes, statistics don't lie. Instead of accepting defeat, the Opps are still in a state of denial and blaming the 70% of sinkies for being lazy, blind and stupid.

They should look at themselves first. Are they really the so called Jamaican sprinters who can take gold in the Olympics sprint event while the PAP candidates are like the second class Asian runners?

I seriously doubt so.

Consider this hypothetical situation I put to you. We are in the Olympic Games. We are in the finals of the 100m. There are sprinters from all over the world in this finals. Lets say we take the sprinter from Jamaica, and we break his leg and tie his arm behind him. When the starter gun goes off, the Jamaican sprinter, not unexpectedly, comes in dead last. We then point at him and loudly announce to the world that all Jamaicans cannot run, and that they are simply not up to par with the rest of sprinters. Fair or not? True or not?

This is what happens to singapore opposition. They are also similarly handicapped by lawsuits, bankruptcies, jail time, intimidation, etc. Not to mention other election shenanigans like gerry mandering, one sided press coverage, short campaign period so that they are not able to get their message out to the masses, etc. There are many bright and smart singaporeans. Funny lah you! The opposition quality is far from being Jamaican sprinters! You need a reality check. Just a few regular joes getting beat up every now and then. In the good old days of Pax Romana, did you see a lot of slave revolts? Who is going to stand behind a few disgruntled baffoons and get themselves mauled as well? Low and Chee ain't no Sparticus as far as I can tell. Best to be happy you are not going hungry tonight. Count your blessings.

Sinkies want winners, not fair play. Fair play doesn't pay the bills nor put money in the bank account. Winners do.

if i am a politician, my policy would be to dismantle the causeway and build a bridge instead. students get to choose the subjects they wish to learn at school and school starts late, say 10am till say 6pm depending on subjects chosen. school lunch will be free so students can eat at school if they want and parents don't need to worry about feeding them so much. airforce and navy to build airbase on foreign soil, such as karimum island or natuna island with cooperation with neighbouring countries. public transport will be free. national service will be voluntary with the aim of recruiting only those who wish to serve in the armed forces as a career option. these volunteers will also be given the option to study engineering and other relevant subjects for free and obtain degree when they graduate...............
free medical for those under 17 and above 65. those in between will have to cover themselves with private health insurance.
currency union with indonesia, because at the present we are bleeding them to death. their rich are avoiding taxes and not remitting fudns back home from plantation, logging and other natural resources.........a poor neighbour will be a cause for instability in future.

so this is just some creative thing oppsition should bring up in future elections. not just about local elections and MRT brekdowns.

in singapore the idiots far outnumber the intelligentsia so its so sad...theres a surprising lack of communication, discussion and debate over the important social and political issues in this country, its almost like sinkies love living in their own shroud of ignorance.

i highly doubt theres many countries in the world especially first world countries as dumb as sinkieland.i always believe the level of religion in a country is a high correlating factor of how stupid its citizens is........singapore with 70 percent of religion doesnt bode very well......we are only beaten by pinoyland with 94 percent of its population as catholics......even hong kong and taiwanese and japan and china display far lower level of religious beliefs and higher levels of atheism.......with hong kong at 23 percent religioun, taiwan 45 percent, japan 23.5 percent.my goal in life would be to migrate to one or more countries where the religiosity is lower than 30 percent, namely australia or uk or canada, that would be a breathe of fresh air and intellectual simulating.

It’s just the sheer laziness of sinkies. They are to blame for this lack of democracy in our country. In countries with established traditions of democracy, free flowing ideas and communications are exchange and debated and acted upon. In these countries, the citizens do not have to do too much. All the information is present by the media and the political parties themselves for electorate to make their decision at election time. Just look at the US Presidential election process. Months before the actual elections all the candidates, from both the Republican and Democratic parties are publicly and prominently presented. Whether it was in the form of campaigning at various locations, or nationally televised TV debates, or just plain interviewing with the many independent newspapers and publications, the public gradually know all the candidates very well. By now, most Americans know what Donald Trump stands for, what his personality is like, and what policies he wants to put in place. Likewise, they are pretty familiar with the other candidates and their viewpoints too. Without too much effort, US voters have all this information streaming into them from various sources.

Sinkie voters on the other hand have to really work to get information on any other candidate or party that is not PAP. In fact, Sinkies have to go even deeper than that. They have to independently assess the viability of each party and their policies before they can vote for that party. They have go back to basics and examine the very system they have in Singapore and how it can survive without the PAP. They have educate themselves between what is the PAP and what is the civil service and the Government. They have to evaluate whether the opposition party they vote for can run a good government. The American voter does not have this problem. They are not worried that Obama has no experience, not even as a Mayor or Governor, to run the country. They are not worried that Obama has no military experience. They know that voting in any President that has no such experience does not mean the end of the world, like the PAP would like Singaporean voters to think. Singaporean voters have to work all of this out themselves.

Singaporeans need to ask themselves basic questions that American voters do not. Questions such as “Is running a Town Council effectively, a pre-requisite to runing the country”? “Will the whole country break down the next day if the PAP loses the elections?” These and many questions have to be asked and answered in a logical way without emotions and prejudices. But unfortunately, this is beyond the current ability of the Singaporean voter. Well, at least 70% of them. This is hard work. This requires thinking and asking hard questions. Sinkies are averse to this and frankly are too lazy.

In the past, there might have been justification because of the tight control over all traditional media such as print, radio and TV exercised by the PAP. But today, there are many independent bloggers who voice their views at the risk of jail time, and many alternative news websites such as this one, TRE, The Real Singaporean, etc. All a voter has to do is spend some time at these websites, keep an open mind, and get an alternative point of view. There is nothing subversive about it. And they are educating themselves and if after viewing these websites, they still want to stick with the PAP, that’s fine by me. Unfortunately, this does not happen often enough. Singapore is the one country where you really have to work for it and at it to be more democratic. The laziness of Singaporeans and the desire to be just spoon fed the information is the reason for the gradual demise of true democracy in Singapore. In the absence of a real press freedom, any spoon feeding will simply be the PAP’s version. In this sense, Singaporeans deserve what they get. All the ills of the current system (over crowded trains, breakdowns in the MRT, job loss, cost of living increases, inability to withdraw CPF, obscene politician salaries, etc.) can all be traced to this laziness to even do some minimum research to get an alternative viewpoint. Singaporeans are truly screwed.

I don't think those stupid sinkie ball-less fucktards know what is democracy. It is just words and letters to them. Those who are very polluted with sinkie behaviour will try to act like they know a lot and even start to educate you and point out errors in you.

You can keep on deluding yourself. And yet again, you have proven your logic to be flawed. First you say the opposition is not on par with the PAP and now you admit that the odds are stacked against the opposition. So, which is it? How can an opposition where the odds are stacked against them expected to be on par?

How about CST and LTK? Have they been sued? CST even successfully sued PAP politicians. LTK took down a GRC despite all the handicaps.

Again, your laziness of thought is very evident here. The question should be 'Why are opposition members sued in the first place? Not why this oppo guy was not sued and that oppo guy was not sued". Just because these 2 persons were not sued does not justify the fact that many more were sued. LTK "taking down" a GRC means nothing in the overall context of the elections. The fact is that 30% voted against the PAP, and just based representation alone, 30% of the 89 seats should have been opposition. that means a total of about 26 seats should have been non PAP. If you go by popular vote, 26 seats is a lot. Therefore, LTK "taking" down a GRC is nothing to crow about.

Interesting theory and correlation with religion. But I don't really subscribe to this. eg. France and Spain are predominantly Catholic countries, with well over 50% in this religion. Yet, I do not find them to be stupid.

You are right about this. The opposition, especially the fake WP oppo, have been lacking in broad new policies. Some opposition party should have a bold platform. eg. abolish NS, replace it with a standing army, or just restrict NS to 6 months. Then they explain the benefits of this to the people, and why it does not impact the defense and security of singapore. and they stick with it.

Or simply state that all the CPF will be released at 55 years. Or that health care will be substantially affordable. Or that all employers must adopt a hire singaporean first strategy with a new law that enforces this. I did not hear any of this.

They kept quiet because it was hard to dispute the fact that the PAP had won with a overwhelming majority and wondered why someone so highly educated could not understand the meaning of the results.

U can continue to live in the Roman times, but we are in the modern era. Recent Asian history is full of revolts. Thailand against Thaksin. Phillippines against Marcos. Taiwan against the KMT. South Korea against the military generals etc. This is not new. This is happening with many precedents. Stop living in the past.
