whom we call Said Zahari, or simply Pak Said.
So, who is Said Zahari? Let us measure him by what he tried to do, in the
50s and 60s, in Malaya and Singapore.

By 1961, despite Said Zahari being aware that the board of directors at
Utusan Melayu, was under the control of a few Umno individuals, he was full
of hope. He thought that the role of an independent press was to provide the
rakyat with the confidence to speak openly about contentious issues, and
thus enable both political and economic reforms to take place.
Uppermost in Said Zahari's mind was the original aims of Utusan Melayu,
which were to champion the cause of the people and be an outlet for their
ideas. The paper, founded by Yusuf Ishak in 1939, was the first Malay-owned
newspaper, had three aims in its mission statement, "To serve the religion,
the people and the country." Yusuf Ishak later became the first President of
Singapore.
When Ibrahim Fikri put his four demands to Said Zahari, the latter and the
staff in Utusan Melayu retaliated. They were shocked by the arrogance of
Umno and later led the Malay-driven strike, which lasted for 100 days, to
protect the independence of Utusan Melayu. The strike was apparently broken
when Said Zahari was prevented from entering Malaya, after a visit to the
newspaper's offices in Singapore.
The paper, which we now call Utusan Malaysia, was initially called Utusan
Melayu. If Said Zahari had his way, today's Utusan would, not be the
mouthpiece of Umno Baru and spew government propaganda, including racist and
religious nonsense.
If Said Zahari had not been detained by Lee Kuan Yew, during Operation Cold
Store, for 17 years, but had been allowed to defend press freedom, both
Malaysia and Singapore might have been very different. Not in terms of
skyscrapers and development, but in the morality of governance.
If Said Zahari had not been punished for defending the right of the media,
to write without fear or favour, he would have ensured the independence of
the press and its role in curbing the excesses of governments.
If Said Zahari had not incurred the wrath of both Tunku Abdul Rahman and Lee
Kuan Yew, both Malaysia and Singapore would not be promoting hate and fear,
especially the racist and religious rhetoric of the current Malaysian
government.

he would have made useful contributions to Malaysian and Singaporean
politics and helped to shape both nations. We may have had a more

Sadly, very few Malaysians have heard of Said Zahari, the one-time editor of
Utusan Melayu, the first Malay-owned newspaper which fought for independence
from the British. Said Zahari celebrated his 87th birthday on May 18, his
greatest traits are his character, his integrity and the personal sacrifices
he made, throughout his life. These have been largely ignored.
Said Zahari is among the great Malays of his time, and in our time. Through
Utusan Melayu's editorials, the editors incurred the wrath of both foreign
and domestic governments. They were unapologetic, when writing the truth.
When confronted by an Umno man, who demanded the paper apologise for writing
a story which detailed the plight of some Malay farmers, Said Zahari said,
"I am a journalist, not a diplomat. I do not speak the language of
diplomacy."

PAP won elections simply by improving the lives of the majority. Period.
PAP continued to win elections by pleasing more voters than it pissed off with its various policies. Period.
There are no dirty tricks. GRCs won't keep them in power if enough voters are unhappy with PAP and vote them out. But the hard truth is that Ah Gong was a very astute man. He learnt and applied many basic truths in life to politics after surviving the Jap Occupation and the British colonial rule. As long as Ah Gong took care of the bread-and-butter issues, he would have secured the votes of the majority. Vast majority of voters are a lot more concerned about putting food on the table and improvement to their lives over democracy and freedom of speech.
While Chee and JBJ yap non-stop about these ideals and some people do appreciate, most also realized that Chee and JBJ and other opposition figures have no idea and little interest in bread-and-butter issues. So, these duds only secure the minority of the votes on a regular basis.
Every good government gives out goodies. Only a corrupt government will keep the goodies for itself. There are many resource rich countries that have very poor infrastructure because their government plundered the state resources for personal enrichment.
Ballot slips are serialized to prevent electoral fraud such as stuffing the ballot boxes. If you think your civil service boss or government public service is mistreating you because you voted for opposition, this is your golden opportunity to file a police report and get rid of them, because according to the law, your vote is secret. Even Low Thia Khiang conceded that your vote is secret.
Political playing fields have always been unequal since the beginning of time. Even Ah Gong was once the opposition. The opposition here face an uphill task because PAP focuses on bread-and-butter issues. Many sinkies do travel around the ASEAN region and beyond, and we have seen for ourselves the poverty that exists in many parts of the world because their government is way more concern about being corrupt than about improving the lives of the people.
That's why majority of voters vote for PAP.
