Who beat up Lim Chin Siong in Prison that let to his attempted suicide?

Spot on bro. The kids and 2 generations were kept in the dark. All we received is bogeyman stories.
School History class was so boring these days. Because we do not have a teacher like Scroobal.I remember seeing photos of my uncle travelling on the Jalan Grik Pasir Puteh after it was opened to public. Never rang a bell of its significance.Whatever it is, we may never find out the truth about t.

I got bad news for you bro. I too was hoping that would be the case. When Lim Hock Siew and the Dr Lee's family no longer wanted to proceed I was hoping that would not be the end. I too was hoping that CC Chin and Hong Lysa would put the record straight or set a more accurate history. Unfortunately Hong Lysa fell into the gaze of Tan Jing Quee and has been straddling the Peninsula with him till his Death. I sensed that it was deliberate on his part.

CC Chin is truly our best hope and he has been very accurate and his sources are impeccable but my sense is that he does not want to break the Chin Peng-Old man pact as it will cut him off. He might wait for the old man and chin Peng to kick the bucket but he too is at St Peter's gate.

on the contrary i think it shall happen...sooner r later...history does not belong to any group/org/entity/person etc...at the moment C C Chin(well known MCP historian) is still alive n active so hopefully he can carry on wif his works n inspire the next generation of historians likes say Hong Lysa n Huang Jianli...disregard Martyn n Seelan who appear to be dilettantes...attach this interesting interview given by C C Chin afew yrs back on this v topic...http://s-pores.com/2008/01/ccchin/ btw curious to know why u created this thread all of sudden?...v interesting n intriguing just like the characters n content!...oh yes i recall reading somewhere there were allegations that LCS was allegedly drugged n this may hv contributed to his suicide attempt??...

Good catch.

I have been following this for years. I knew that as long as Tan Jing Quee was alive and active, nobody was going to come out and reveal what happened. The old Asian habit of keeping things under the hat to avoid unpleasantness. He passed away on 14 June and with the chief protagonist out of the way, something might come out.

Ho Piao who was one of the 3 closest to this incident passed away in London and it was obvious that he did not confide with his family. Ho Piao was a big fish but after the LCS incident, withdrew completely and kept to himself and his rabbits. He kept away from this clique but was close to Raman's clique stranded in London.

We would have wasted at least 30 years and realised that we took the wrong road at the fork and a generation lost. I am told that the general population could tell the difference between the colonial masters and the communist and were not prepared to jump from the frying pan into the fire. Despite all the romantic propaganda coming from the rightist and the leftists the true pictu was closer to the middle. The right want to paint a doomsday situation to frighten the monkeys while leftist was claiming wide swathe of support that never existed.

Forummer's Forvendent point about his parent's view does carry weight and reflected much of the general view at that time. I recall the entire civil service and the English educated had no time for the left and they looked at old man with suspicion as he was running with the communist. The PAP as far as they were concerned was red but a lighter shade of red and it was Hobson's choice with Marshall lost and Yew Hock into rife corruption and thugs.

gee wiz...that statement of yrs abt LCS n Lai Teck made my hair stand bro...spine chilling blood curdling stuff!...imagine if these chaps had actually grabbed power in Singapore!...

James P was unusual. He was respected by the Universities freshies as he refused to rag them but spoke to them as equals. After that communism fell away. He had strong leftist views but could not reconcile with communism . Devan Nair who was considered very intelligent could not out argue James P and fell out very early. Goh Keng Swee was close to him and kept in touch with James and even old man visited in KL when he was under detention. Old man asked the authorities to see him at the Singapore official residence in KL and offered him the usual London scholarship package that many others took up. He refused and demanded to know why he was detained. Old man told him he was caught in the "cross-fire".

What old man did not reveal in his memoirs was that James P was offered the education portfolio and he turned it down as his wife was a teacher. Old man sent him New Year cards but this prick did not reply and ended up being screwed by old man in his memoirs. The irony is that James P was an ardent admirer of old man and Singapore. It reflected his leftist economic view of a centrally controlled economy.

think James Puthucheary was another v smart chap who knew when to move on...but saying that i think the world wld be a darker n more depressing place wif out the likes of Chia Thia Poh, Lim Hock Siew, Poh Soo Kai etc...best illustrates the enigma that is the human spirit...

kepala batu in the nicest possible way. These are guys that wore their heart on their sleeves and cared deeply for the man on the street. They continue to be great role models but tactically flawed. While Mandela saw events moving in his direction and stayed the cause for the end in sight, the same cannot be said of communism and leftist politics. It's was lost cause so they ended up daring the fucking old man and he sat the in his Istana playing chicken with see guys.

That is why I have great admiration for Lim Chin Siong, brother Lim Chin Joo and later Ho Piao. Said Zahari despite his resoluteness is living in a fantasy world and so are people like Teo Soh Lung. They could not separate their cause from the old man. They act to the old man and not to their cause. Till the very end Lim Chin Siong had an amicable relationship with old man and GKS. Until his death, while the rest of Singapore was writing our own version of history, Chinese new year and new year cards were regulary exchanged.

The Sedition Trial - A Massive Tactical Error

When Chia Thia Poh and Koo Young both Barisan MPs, were charged in court, the defence team instead of weighing the options decided to use the occasion not only defend the 2 accused but to take the court appearence to highlight the plight of the detainees. Their primary defence was that Govt doctors had prescribed drugs with side effects knowing that LCS would become depressed and suicidal and therefore lead to his death - a plot by the govt.

During the trial their world caved in when it was ascertained that govt doctor who first prescribed the drugs to cure his hypertension was senior registrar, Dr Beatrice Chen. Dr Chen happens to be the wife of another well known detainee - Dr Lim Hock Siew.

So they changed tact and accused the doctor and the Prison authorities of failing to monitor a patient who showed suicidal tendencies and let him attempt to hang himself. A case of gross negligence.

During all trial the well known detainees testified not about the case but how they were arrested , thrown in solitary confinement, denied nutritious food etc. LCS claimed amnesia and that he could not recall the event of the day.

The Govt took the opportunity to justify the press release on 17 Dec 1965 about what actually transpired.

No big deal about getting beaten up in lockup, prison or detention. It's understood SOP. LCS was before my time and I didn't know what happened or who beat him up. I know who beat Francis up but even Francis himself didn't blow up the matter. He concentrated on political differences and that's wise of him to remember dirty laundry from the past. Before he was arrested and beaten up, he was in position to order others to be arrested and beaten up.

FS was not beaten up. He said it himself in his book To Catch a Tartar.

Not many people can tell the difference. The idea is to make their targets really uncomfortable, disorient them, stretch the sessions and repeatedly ask questions. Answers given, admissions and confessions are practically worthless until and after they are corroborated. Its hard to keep a consistent line on an event or series of actions unless it is the truth or close to the fact. So the trick is the ask the same question repeatedly until a consistent line is formed.

They are not interrogating thugs or criminals.

See above in red. I've read To Catch A Tartar. He told mostly the truth, but not the whole truth. Somethings are better left unsaid. ;)

Your idol Gugu? None of my business. She has disappeared already. Probably dealt with by Malaysian police like the Mongolian lady. Didn't receive any call for bail so far. 凶多吉少。:(

Missed this gem of yours earlier in the midst of footballing action. Yes, the definition of "beat up." :D

On one hand, making the calculation that it's not worth fighting the obvious winner is rational. Most detainees (of the 100-200) went that way. By extension, most SG apolitical, practical, live and let live. For ex-Coldstore detainees though, there was no option to fight another day.

On the other hand, there were the few that have taken a different stand. Probably the only non-violent stand that could be taken... Think the choices offered were black and white. Chose difficult path. Can be argued their lives had quite some meaning and historical impact.
