Champ gets off canvas to win Kranji Mile
Michael Lee/Craig Brennan
Sunday, October 03, 2010

The inconceivable nearly happened in the Panasonic Kranji Mile on Sunday, but sheer class lifted Better Than Ever to an astonishing victory for his second Group 1 success.

The Laurie Laxon-trained champion, who had previously won the Group 1 Singapore Guineas at his only other 1600m attempt, normally scores by panels with regular partner Saimee Jumaat cuddling him along to the winning post, but for the first time, he teetered on the brink of defeat when he hit a snag at the 300m.

The French Deputy four-year-old indeed gave his legion of supporters, who had backed him down to his usual prohibitive $6 odds, a major scare at the 300m when he copped a bit of a check and looked hopelessly boxed in for another 100m in the $500,000 1600m weight-for-age event, which is the first Leg of the Singapore Triple Crown Series.

Saimee Jumaat gets Better Than Ever home in the last stride and nail Waikato
(Vlad Duric) in the Kranji Mile.

Stablemate Waikato (Vlad Duric) who had stalked leader Cheyenne Dancer (Robbie Fradd) looked to have pinched a decisive break when he shot clear at the 300m, with Ghozi (Sean Cormack) chiming in on the outside, and Better Than Ever running into dead ends in a tight pocket behind the pair.

The Kranji crowd looked on in disbelief as the Kranji Mile looked like heading towards last year’s winner Waikato for a second time. The Pins seven-year-old would have turned giant-killer at the incredible odds of $469, a three-figure quote that certainly did not do justice to his record, but seemed normal when taken in context.

But Better Than Ever was down but not out. In a super effort, the champion displayed his real mettle by picking himself off the canvas to nab his stablemate right at the last stride and score by a neck from Waikato for an amazing stable quinella – incidentally bringing his own unbeaten run to an all-time record of 11 wins.

Ghozi was a further one-and-a-half lengths away in third place in a time of 1 min 35.06 secs.

Laxon and owner Tang Weng Fei of Jupiter Stable were clearly the two most relieved men at Kranji after the stunning victory.

“I honestly didn’t know how to feel when Waikato looked the winner and Better Than Ever could lose,” said Laxon who fully owns Waikato.

“I would have felt absolutely embarrassed if my own horse was the one to have made Better Than Ever taste his first defeat.

“It would have been racing if it happened but at the end of the day, I’m very happy it didn’t happen. Overall it was the perfect result.

“It certainly looked dicey when he was flat-footed at the 300m. Things didn’t quite work out for him, but I think it’s in dire circumstances like today when we saw his amazing champion qualities come forward.

“It was his toughest win by far today and I think it’s the first time that I saw Saimee hit him.

“When he did that, he just knuckled down. I still thought he would be too late but luckily, he got up where it mattered.”

Laxon said the second Leg of the Series, the Group 1 Raffles Cup (1800m) on October 24 is right on target for Better Than Ever, but has ruled out the third Leg, the premier handicap race, the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup (2200m) on November 14.

Kranji Mile victors: Trainer Laurie Laxon, owner Tang Weng Fei and jockey
Saimee Jumaat show off the silverware.

“He will then have a well-deserved rest after the Raffles Cup. We will then bring him back and Dubai is his next target next year,” he said.

Saimee will certainly be part of the ride for a long way, but he himself admitted the ride in the Kranji Mile gave him many anxious moments.

The nine-time champion jockey had to use all his brilliance to get the champion home and for the first time had to resort to the whip to extract that last little bit extra from Better Than Ever.

“He was bolting early but I was getting a little bit of pressure from the outside,” said Saimee. “In the end I decided to go to the fence and then ride for luck.

“I didn’t want to go to the fence but I thought it better than fighting him.

“I was a little worried that a gap might not come and when it did come Waikato had got away from me.

“But I was always confident of running down Waikato. When I put the stick through to the left hand at the 150m I thought I would be able to get him.

“It’s the first time I’ve had to hit him, but that will put him in good stead for when he goes and races internationally.

“It’s great to be associated with such a great athlete.”

Duric on the runner-up Waikato summed up the situation when the pace slackened passing the 1000m mark.

“They stacked up a bit early and I was caught out wide a little so I decided to whip around them,” said Duric.

“I knew I was on the best weight-for-age horse apart from the winner. I had Better Than Ever behind me and back on the fence so I decided to get going early and make him chase.

“I put my head down and thought I had him, but he got me late and showed just what a great horse he is.”

Always Certain, who was sent out the second favourite at $200 (odds of 39/1), finished fifth and jockey Danny Beasley said they may have found out the truth about the four-year-old.

“Realistically he is probably a handicapper,” said Beasley. “Rising to weight-for-age just found him out I think.

“Don’t get me wrong, he ran well but just at this class he finds it a bit too tough.”
