Better Than Ever looks hard to beat again Michael Lee

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The customary ultra-short odds and another one-horse race are on the cards after top-notch galloper Better Than Ever scored an impressive barrier trial win at Kranji on Tuesday, despite being ridden more patiently than usual.

Drawn the widest in the seven-horse field, the Panasonic Kranji Mile-bound French Deputy four-year-old faced the breeze four wide standing leader My Son about four lengths, but always looking like he was ambling along in first gear.

Regular partner Saimee Jumaat did not budge an inch as My Son (Barend Vorster) swung for home with a big lead. At the 250m, Better Than Ever was still third and seemingly content to sit there all the way home until he suddenly switched on to flash past My Son for a 1 ½-length victory in 59.84 seconds, reeling off the last 600m in 35 seconds.

After such a display, the Laurie Laxon-trained star, who is undefeated in 10 runs, again looks to have no rivals capable of putting a dent on his unblemished record in this Sunday’s $500,000 Group 1 Panasonic Kranji Mile.

“As he was drawn wide, we didn’t want him to go hard, but just let him have a nice hit-out and enjoy himself,” said Saimee of the noted on-pace runner.

“So, we tried this out – let him settle somewhere in midfield in the best part of the track, and produce his burst late.

“He was very relaxed throughout. Even when the other runner (Nero) was half-a-length in front of him, he didn’t pull at all.

“I could have stayed there as long as I wanted. I just let him roll along from the 600m and he just attacked the line so well.

“I’m very happy with the run. He’s also pulled up very well and is right on song for Sunday.”

Raced by the Jupiter Stable, Better Than Ever’s last start came in the Group 3 Jumbo Jet Trophy (1400m) on August 22 when he took on older and classier rivals, but still treated them with the same contempt.

Among the beaten brigade were stablemates Waikato (2nd) and Big Maverick (5th) who will be joined in the Mile by another Laxon heavyweight, Patron’s Bowl winner Intercept, but Laxon was almost feeling sorry for them.

“Unfortunately that’s the way it is. They’re bound to clash with him in those feature races,” said Laxon.

“Always Certain (prepared by Michael Freedman) is also another one who keeps running into him, but it’ll be interesting to see how much he’s improved after his last couple of wins.

“But (my other three runners) are in good shape and will gallop tomorrow. Waikato and Intercept will work together while Big Maverick will run with Mark Walker’s horse Tell A Tale.

“Waikato won this race last year and he is always a chance in such races. Big Maverick is peaking at the right time while I expect Intercept to run better than at his last start.

“I don’t know what happened to him. He got back further that usual and just never got going.”

Jockeys Vlad Duric, Oscar Chavez and Joao Moreira have been engaged to ride Waikato, Big Maverick and Intercept respectively.

Laxon said he was delighted with Better Than Ever’s final blowout and the way he has been ticking over since his Jumbo Jet Trophy success.

“He ran on well in his trial, didn’t he? That was the whole point, sit off the pace and let him work home,” he said.

“He didn’t drop the bit and he finished very strongly. He’s pulled up all right too.”

Laxon said that the slight queries over his racing fitness prior to his Jumbo Jet Trophy return from a three-month spell are now irrelevant.

“He was a little tight then but he’s all round now. He’s very fit and ready to go,” he said.

Besides tackling an unprecedented 11-in-a-row, Better Than Ever, who has amassed more than $1 million in prizemoney, will also be aiming for his seventh Group win in a row, as well as his second Group 1 success after the Singapore Guineas.
