What 6.9 million? It is 8 million!

It's already happening. The private sector is ahead of the government in this. Many years ago, some of my commercial associates moved their operations to various locations in Johor. Now, regular blokes are moving their residences there. Only one thing is preventing them from doing it more "wholesomely" - their kid's education.

Cheers!

Well, there is one solution. Either we buy Johore or we take over it!!

Definitely. The world is getting smaller and working in another country is getting quite normal. The problem the gov't faces will be complicated by the CPF issue. If one took up another citizenship and still retain Sg citizenship, would that person be allowed to withdraw their CPF?

Cheers!

Would allowing dual citizenship help?

I read what agoraphobic wrote, and it sent shivers down my spine...

Welcome foreigners? Why?!!
If they continue to take up road-sweepers, dish-washers (actually some sg ppl would want these jobs too.. those who don't hold even primary education.. those who got out from prison and desperate for jobs), waiters, cleaners, construction workers... (actually.. if all these jobs give decent wages, sg ppl will not shun them.. let's face it.. this is the truth!!)

The fact is.. more and more foreigners are not coming in to take up lower end jobs.. and more of them are not at the lower end of the Wealth indicators too. They can afford not only ONE car.. but TWO or THREE!! They can afford CONDOS.. and they still go buy re-sale flats to do what they can to EARN even more here!!

Why should I welcome these LOT? Pinoys whose qualifications are perhap dubious.. and whose universities can't even compare to NUS, NTU or any of our Polytechnics.. and they get Executive jobs.. whereas our own grads are left out?!!!

Fark them!! Get back to their own country and help it prosper!! Don'w come here to earn our SG dollars to get richer when they return back home.

Since by your words, they don't want to make SG their home.. what extent can their contribution be to SG? If they are just grabbing our SG dollars and then scam.. then I say, "SCRAM NOW!! let our locals have decent jobs and earn to feed mouths"

Don't support foreigners!! Support our own.. lest we be seen as "dog eating dog"!!

From agoraphobic's writing, I profile him to be just another foreign trash leeching on tiny red dot.

He needs to meet up with the ultra right!

Welcomed or not, that is up to the sentiment of the day. The factors sorrounding the labour factor will determine where the labour force heads to. My company advertised for sales engineers early in 2013, by July, we were still awaiting locals to apply (ability to converse in Hokkien is an advantage but not necessary). By August, my boss had it with waiting and we employed two foreigners. Neither societal sentiments nor government policy dictates the decision for this, economic needs take over.

Cheers!

It's alright not for cpf to be withdrawn with dual citizenships. Cpf can be returned only if they renounce sg citizenships and if they want to take on the citizenship again they have to put back everything plus interests. Dual citizenships will help singaporeans to enjoy the benefits like other countries' citizens who can have these such as hongkong and taiwan ( the latter is multiple citizenships) and not feel hatred by forcing to make a very reluctant choice. If singaporeans can have dual citizenships and access the affordable medical and welfare systems as other countries' citizens, they will not blame pap for everything as well.

Well, I'm sure this thought have crossed the minds of Singapore's policy makers, or as some forummner say, elitists. It's up to them to decide I guess.

Cheers!

Nope. My coy is a Singapore company, wholly owned by Singaporeans, with regional operations, international representations. Majority of the staff are Singaporeans. In the last few years, a number of employeers are Malaysians. Only this year did we employ PRCs, and so far, their performance equals any locals we could have got.

Cheers!

To prevent any speculation from the forummer here, I'll come straight on this, I was a Singaporeans, gave up my citizenship to get my cpf when I emigrated, am back here on E-pass when my ex-boss made me an offer, so I am back here to work. You may wish to profile me a foreign trash, I am not offended. But I am not leeching on Peesai, nobody is except probably some members of your elected government.

Right wing? In Singapore? Have not seen or noticed any who are dumb enough to announce that they are.

Cheers!

I can't visualize a right-winged group in Singapore. The military commanders who join politics are PAP supporters, and general or not I don't see any of them able to handle a school-yard brawl let alone beat up foreigners (I can tell, I am not a fighter but I can take on one-to-one any of your military generals). There are no right or left winged politics in Singapore. Singaporeans have been de-politicised two generations ago.

Cheers!

Eh you fucking parasite foreign trash, get the fuck back to where you came from!

Spot on!!
My thoughts were exactly the same!!
Not giving the whole picture is hiding half the truth.. and we all know pappies LOVE to do that... give half.. hide rest.

I bet the ad asked for teh sky.. but paid less than road-sweeper.. asking for driver's licence, must hava a car, must have contacts.. how many years of experience.. must deliver.. must do weekend.. blah blah blah.. and pay... only at interview then say.. but once ppl go.. and find out.. they will spread the word to tell others to "avoid this carrot-chopping place".

Sales engineer.. speak Hokkien is an added advantage..?? Hmm.. selling what?
Full disclosure.. otherwise you are just painting an abstract picture.. where you can say it is anything.. or everything you want.

And... at the end of the day, companies will also have to kowtow to customers.. if no customers buy your company's services or goods.. you might as well pack up and head back home!! It's not the labour market that drives a business.. it's the demand of the customers. If business owners think they can suppress costs by suppressing employees' wages, while not realizing that living costs all around are going up.. then.. they are BLIND!!

is the professor talking with his ass? we'll probably have to cut down all the remaining forests if we have to squeeze 8 mil.

8m population by 2030?

SINGAPORE - Earlier this year, Singaporeans balked at the idea of having 6.9 million people on our tiny island. But some experts, including Dr Parag Khanna, Senior Fellow at the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, has said that Singapore can fit 8 million or more by 2030.

That is, if urban planning plays its part in spreading out the load.

"There is a much more physically devolved Singapore in which the towns play a much stronger role, in which there's much more local economic activity and vibrancy, in which everyone is not cramping down into Orchard or CBD every single day. And that Singapore can most certainly accommodate a couple million more people."

Dr Khanna was speaking at The Straits Times Global Outlook Forum on Friday.

will there be damage control for Dr Khanna

Salaries are not posted on the job ads. This part of the employment contract is open to negotiation between the imcumbent and management, and it is natural for both sides to maximise what is to their benefit. In this case, I go through the applicants and shortlist them for the first interview and do the first round selection. After that, the selected person comes in for another interview with a panel, and it is up to him/her to ask for what he/she thinks s/he is worth and convince the panel, which may or may not include the company's finance manager (he signs the pay/claims approvals). Sorry, I am unable to post the ad, you want to view it, wait for the next round we need to hire, or look in Job Market on the internet.

Cheers!

Salaries are not posted on the job ads.

Sorry, but that's BS.

Salaries are often posted on job ads, usually a range or limit is quoted.

If offered the job, the company quotes a salary to the prospective employee, and it is up to him/her to accept or refuse the offer.

Please stop making excuses for shady, non-transparent HR practices.

Commercial (B2B) goods to the manufacturing sector. Sales in this sector to Singapore manufacurers involves working with purchasers and sometime technical staff in the production or R&D. English is mostly used but sometimes especially when the interaction moves on to "small talk," it is in casual Hokkien, or rather Singlish. Once the relationship is established and ongoing, the conversation on business essentials only involves delivery schedules on repeat orders, stock replenishment. Sales visits comes down to periodic goodwill visits and year-end or festive "gifts."

Yes, the demand for the goods due to other factors dictate the volume of sales, but the relationship forged by the salesperson with the customers keeps the business from going to the competitor. In this, sometimes speaking Hokkien (or other local lingos) help. Of course when speaking to the decision maker in a large MNC, you won't need it. All our local sales people are able to switch between English and a couple of Chinese dialects. Our company I believe pays a fair "market rate." Else our sales blokes would run off to our competitors.

Cheers!

rubbish. then why does jobcentral have them? you want good workers fast post a salary. and this is how salaries go up natural when there is competition. Is this why your company could not hire anyone? Because they think you were hiding something?
