YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES: SINGAPORE 2010
$387m on YOG well spent

By Leonard Lim

THE Government's projected $387 million tab for the Youth Olympic Games is more than triple the original estimates, but it will be money well-spent.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan said in a round-up on the YOG yesterday with local media: 'I have no doubt we will recoup our investment, both on the tangible side and intangible side of the ledger.

"The Singapore Government has not lost its bearings and its carefulness in the way we spend money.'

There has been criticism online on whether the money devoted to the Games, which end on Thursday, will benefit Singaporeans.

But MCYS said previously it has provided a fillip to businesses, with about $260million worth of contracts awarded to local companies, and estimated tourism receipts of $57 million.

On the intangible side, Dr Balakrishnan said it would continue to brand the country as an excellent place to live, work and play.

'It's really part of our larger game plan of re-positioning Singapore. We now want to be one of the most exciting, happening, dynamic, vibrant places that cater to all needs,' he added

Money well spent?
1. Please provide an item by item account of how the money was spent. To make things easier for you, please list individual contracts more than $10 Million each. For those below the threshold, please highlight those as you deem appropriate.
2. Please provide a list of tangible quantifiable benefits and the approximate $ amount for these items. Please also explain how the money earned will be used to benefit singaporeans.
3. There is no such thing as an intangible benefit. If it's a benefit, it must be tangible. Intangible assets yes, but these will eventually be expected to also reap tangible benefits in the future which should be quantifiable. You can ask your subordinate Mr Teo. So please go back to point 2.

As long as the PAPies spend the money, they wll say it is well spent. They lost billions upon billions and still they think it was well spent. Mahbok Tan spent $400,000 to rename Marina Bay, Marina Bay and he still thought it was money well spent.

The truth is that as long as the PAPies are invovled, no one in their right mind should look to the PAPies for an objective point of view.

Worse, it's like giving them to adults who can beat you up when they're drunk and take away your properties with the keys.

Whose money was he talking about? He seems to forget that the money belongs to Singaporeans and not his. We want the money to feed the poor and he used it to show off.

Well, Vivian, please show us the numbers from your feasibility study to prove that SG will recoup its investments or did you merely feel it in your bones?

I think he meant that if the money is given to temasick, you wont even see painting of "give away on the road" - so well spent. But if you change them to loose changes and toss them in the sea, we can also hear some "plonk" - lagi well spent. I hope he is listening.

YES, YES, YES.........YES. Worth every cent of it.

See the big picture my friends, the BIG picture. For every cent spent, you get 1 dollar in return - the hotels, the casinos, the restaurants, the shops, the airport, the airlines, the taxis, etc - patronised by foreign spectators, their parents, guardians, the atheletes themselves, the foreign media - wow-wee the tills ringing non-stop! The publicity for Singapore tourism and goodwills - will continue for years to come. Of course, the local companies also gain. All these will be translated into higher revenue for the government.

Remember, we did not have to build huge stadiums like South Africa, Beijing or New Delthi - we make do with what we already have - big savings. Well done, Singapore.
