Take care of Singaporeans too

In his zeal to impress foreigners on how efficiently and smoothly he can run the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has been quite happy to sacrifice the daily necessities of Singaporeans.

Take, for example, the temporary closure of bus-stops. The Land Transport Authority has ordered that buses cannot stop outside the YOG venues such as the one at the Toa Payoh Stadium. Two SBS bus inspectors are stationed at the stop to wave buses on and prevent commuters from getting off. Is such a measure necessary?

bus-stop.jpg

Closed for nearly two weeks

Could security concerns be the reason that the LTA is doing this? The answer is no because anyone can walk into the vicinity of the stadium and competition halls. There is no security personnel to check visitors.

A likelier reason is that the organisers don't want the entrance of the carpark jammed by vehicular traffic which would prevent YOG athletes and officials from coming and going with ease.

But how can this be? Buses typically stop for no more than a minute or two to allow passengers to alight. Can the YOG coaches ferrying the young athletes not wait momentarily for the SBS buses to pull clear before proceeding?

Alternatively, could the traffic wardens on duty not halt the SBS buses to let the YOG coaches leave the vicinity first? Why the need to shutdown down the bus-stop for two weeks?

bus-stop1.jpg

Is there a need to close bus-stop when traffic is so light?

Has Dr Balakrishnan considered that there are elderly persons and pregnant women who might have difficulty walking from the next bus-stop back down the road to their destinations? What about parents with infants and toddlers?

Grandparents escorting their young charges to take the bus to school were seen arguing with officials at the bus-stop.

Were alternative arrangements made to ensure that they are helped?

Were residents given adequate notice that the stops would be closed? Apparently not because even the bus drivers had to be cued not to stop. If the drivers don't know that the bus-stops are closed, how would residents be expected to know? The LTA couldn't even be bothered to explain why the bus-stops needed to be closed.

Such callousness is unacceptable especially in light of the fact that the minister spent $7 million on chartering an executive jet just to ferry the YOG flame and $9 million to publicise the Games. Could he not allocate a tiny portion of the budget to ensure that bus passengers, especially the elderly and the young, are taken care of?

Then there are reports that students who were "selected" to attend the games were not given refreshments and were instructed to bring their own money to buy their own food and drinks.

For athletes

For volunteers

The Government can build elaborate stage sets which cost millions of dollars to set up to hold concerts that attracted hardly any audience, concerts that were not even central to the Games. And yet it cannot even buy our students drinks?

And while the athletes were treated to buffet spreads, our local volunteers were given meagre portions of rice, fish and green beans. Why such a gulf in treatment? Because they are talent and we are not?

To add injury to insult, volunteers now find themselves suffering from food poisoning. Thirty volunteers were reported to have come down with diarrhea and abdominal pain after they ate the food provided during the triathalon competition at East Coast Park last Sunday.

(The incident happened on 15 Aug 10 but was not reported by the Government media until three days later. Even then, the news first broke on the Internet. Were the journalists asleep? Probably not.)

Recently, Mr Goh Chok Tong took another swipe at Singaporeans, saying that they liked to gripe, that is, to complain about things trivial. It's another indication how removed from the real world PAP ministers are.

The YOG failings which Singaporeans are pointing out are not gripes. They are serious shortcomings of a Government that has long ceased to pay attention to the grievances of the people.

Singaporeans are not an unreasonable lot. They will put up with and suffer inconveniences if they know that these inconveniences benefit our nation. But many know that the YOG was staged as a PAP-glorification exercise - one, it must be added, that has gone horribly awry.

Dr Balakrishnan wants to show the world how well he takes care of an international sporting event. While he is at it he should perhaps think about taking care of Singaporeans too.

We continue to boycott this stupid event .
You have forgotten our forefathers and grandmothers
who are desperately in need of our help .

We will continue to make the following sites a ghost town
bigger than 7th month .

I think this article came at a really bad timing. And also they should do more research before they wrote that article. Although what they said is true, the same basically happens in every city that host any major sporting event.

This article is kind of extra. It's one thing for jokers like us, to be complaining about YOG. However a political party can easily be accused of being "unpatriotic" by their rivals by not supporting a national event. This actually happened in India. Anyone following the news might heard that the venues for the coming commonwealth games is not ready, with less then 2 months to go. A former minister came out and gloat about it and his political rivals immediately catch on this and accuse him of being unpatriotic

This is an event that technically involves the whole nation whether PAP have an ulterior motive in hosting it or not is besides the point. The point is the event has already started and the media has hyped it enough to get a certain degree of support from most. This is a national event. By opening opposing the event during this time just goes to show how narrow minded the opposition party is, instead of celebrating with the nation, they take cheap jabs at it. Instead of helping to promote the country, the want to make it look bad in the eyes of the world.

SDP should have left the comments about this till AFTER the games. When the hype has subsided and pple start to forget. That's the time to stand up and ask questions. Stand up and demand for explanations on issue of money. Questions about how the pple were treated during the event.

SDP need to work on their timing, this article certainly comes at a very bad time IMO

the yog stage came at d rite time for d "brothers & sisters"
who are on holidays.

to char_azn: hoped opps can see tis n take advantage of the situation

This YOG event clearly showed how dis-connected the MIWs are with the ground.

Firstly, they went ahead to organise the event with taxpayers' $ wiithout even sound out the citizens. Henvce the strong push back of non-participation any the citizens.

Secondly, it truly showed MIWs differential treatment between the visitors an the locals. I won't go into the details of volunteers and such.

Thirdly, Singaporeans are well-known to only ,move at the very last minute. this was very clear on the buying of tickets. MIWs tried to con the peasants with 'brisk sales', 'near sold-out' tickets....etc., when it is not. Peasants take their time and will only appear at last minute, just before the games starts.

The MIWs tried to resell the 'sold' tickets' which is really an embarrassment.

However, the many screw-ups, over-budgeting, and high-handedness of the MIWs really turn off the peasants, hencce the mass boycott of the event.

Want to hear more truthful feedbacks from direct callers into radio program ?Just listen to the verbal compliants from call-in listeners on FM93.8.

Lastly, VB, TSL and Ng SM had better publish the expense ledger for the spending of the YOG.

if dey do publish, would you believe?
it might be false figures.

It is not whether we believe or not. I beleive the situation will take care of itself if VB dared to publish it.

Say, if you are the vendor supplying the chairs in the above concert and contract is $1M. If VB reported you were paid $5M, just to fudge other un-accountable numbers, will you keep quiet about it ? The avalaunch of events thereafter should you keep quiet may be too much for you to bear, given the IRAS, stakeholders....etc., coming after you.

Well, example just my layman thinking. At the minimum he should be accountable to the taxpayers as to where, who and how much of the spending went.

I disagree with your comment on the bad timing.
By voicing out the issue on the bus stops closure now, SDP is speaking up on the behalf of the ppl & those old & fragile who needs to alight at those stops & hope that immediate action can be taken by the authorities to rectify the situation.

If wait until the event over than speak up, no point liao.

For this YOG, SDP's messaging has improved significantly. If they can continue to capture this middle ground, it is likely that SDP can engineer a significant turn around. This is especially with their recently acquired media capability which is generations ahead of Goh Meng Seng's home made MTV.

Yes, I am getting better and better at ruining Singapore's reputation, am I not? I manage to con so many forumers here to hero worship me.

You don't understand what the old street slang names mean. It doesn't mean 4 horse roads. It means 4th street. The horse is an old reference to horse-drawn carriages before motors, like reference to bullock carts as in Kereta Ayer.

Big Town - Small Town

1st street : South Bridge Road - North Bridge Road

2nd street : Hill Street - Victoria Street

Small Town

3rd street : Queen Street

4th street : Waterloo Street

5th street : Bencoolen Street

6th street : Prinsep Street

7th street : Selegie Road

That's Singapore old street names in olden days that encompassed what's known as downtown.

Don't bother about that motherfucker lah. He is probably an unemployed middle aged balding homosexual who lives off PAP $10 shopping vouchers for his postings.

No no no. Don't you know I get so much money just by attacking Singapore? The bleeding heart liberals of the western democracies love me for going to jail again and again and again.

YOG in world's media
Games carried by 166 broadcasters worldwide, and is a hit on YouTube

By Bhagyashree Garekar, Assistant Foreign Editor

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said he was delighted by the television coverage and the YouTube hits garnered by the YOG.

'I'm very happy with the television coverage because we've been able to sign contracts with 166 broadcasters in so many countries,' he told The Straits Times at the Youth Olympic Village yesterday.

'The day before yesterday, we were the third most-watched item on YouTube in the world... that's something.'
