While attempting to jaywalk across Rangoon Road, an elderly man was knocked over by a delivery rider on a bike.
The accident occurred in front of a bus stop at Holiday Inn Little India, near Exit A of Farrer Park Station, and across from a Singapore Pools outlet.
According to a nearby shopkeeper, it was "common" to see people jaywalking along this stretch of Rangoon Road.
Dashboard camera footage of the accident was shared on Facebook.
Crossed between vehicles
A video uploaded to Facebook group Singapore roads accident.com on Oct. 4 showed an elderly man, who was carrying a red plastic bag, casually jaywalking across the road amidst stationary traffic. The elderly man crossed between the dashcam vehicle and a single-deck bus, glancing to his right as he made it past the lane divider and eventually the middle divider.
Another elderly man, who was initially waiting by a bollard at the bus stop, noticed the first man making the crossing and decided to follow suit.
He stepped onto the road, looked ahead and hurriedly walked toward the middle divider.
However, when he was almost at the lane divider, the traffic began creeping forward.
At that moment, a motorcycle emerged from behind the dashcam vehicle.
The rider was not able to stop in time and collided with the elderly man.
The elderly man was tossed a short distance through the air as a result and could be seen writhing on the ground as he attempted to recover from the collision.
The first elderly man, who by now had crossed over the middle divider, briefly paused to look back at the accident before continuing on his way.
The biker engaged his kickstand and dismounted from his bike to help the elderly man.
Responding to queries from Mothership, a Singapore Police Force (SPF) spokesperson said that the police were alerted to an accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian along Rangoon Road towards Kent Road at about 12:30pm on Oct. 4.
An 86-year-old man was conveyed conscious to the hospital, while a 50-year-old motorcyclist was assisting with investigations.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Jaywalking a common sight outside Farrer Park exit A
One nearby retail store assistant told Shin Min Daily News that jaywalking was a common sight and drivers could often be heard honking at errant pedestrians."The elevator to the Singapore Pools outlet is directly opposite the MRT station's exit. A lot of punters, a number of them elderly uncles, would simply jaywalk and traverse the middle divider to save time. It's quite dangerous," the assistant commented.
Many of the jaywalkers were those who had exited the train station and were heading towards the betting outlet, Shin Min observed.
While guardrails were erected on the divider, a section of it was only at hip level.
As there was a bus stop on both sides of the road, the elderly jaywalkers would lean from behind stopped buses to check for traffic.
Since the middle divider did not have much floor space, the jaywalkers would also have to hold onto the guard rail to balance themselves while waiting for a safe clearing to complete their crossing, Shin Min wrote.
30 jaywalkers in 20 minutes
Checks on Google Maps by Mothership showed that the nearest traffic light crossing is about 70m away from the bus stops. Most pedestrians utilised the traffic light crossing, but a handful of individuals chose to jaywalk despite the busy evening traffic, Shin Min noted.
There were 30 such individuals in a span of 20 minutes on the same day of the accident.
One of those who jaywalked, Lin (transliteration), told Shin Min that he was aware of the nearby traffic light crossing but had chosen to jaywalk out of convenience.
"The traffic light crossing is some distance from the bus stop. The guard rail isn't as high along this stretch of the road. You just have to be careful," Lin said.
Another elderly man said that he hoped the authorities would install a zebra crossing where the jaywalking hotspot was.
"I'm still physically able and will look out for traffic. However, for the older ones who are less fit, they should consider using the traffic light crossing as it is safer," the man counselled.
