I can understand Subhas defending for Ah Hao, but why is he acting for Benny Yap from BBS, or Shin Ming executive editor Lim Hong Eng, who was jailed one day for casuing one dead and one seriously injured in a car accident?

Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a public trial at which one has had all the guarantees necessary for one's defence.

No one shall be held guilty of any penal offense on account of any act or omission which did not constitute a penal offense, under national or international law, at the time it was committed. Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offense was committed.

The presumption of innocence – being considered innocent until proven guilty – is a legal right that the accused in criminal trials has in many modern countries. The burden of proof is thus on the prosecution, which has to collect and present enough compelling evidence to convince the trier of fact, who are restrained and ordered by law to consider only actual evidence and testimony that is legally admissible, and in most cases lawfully obtained, that the accused is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. In case of remaining doubts, the accused is to be acquitted. This presumption is seen to stem from the Latin legal principle that ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat (the burden of proof rests on who asserts, not on who denies).

It is not a solicitor's place to determine his/her client's innocence or guilt in determining whether to take up a case. It can be argued that one's conscience, moral bias or even plain supposition can dictate otherwise for whatever motivation.

The devil's advocate. Some argue it's useful, if not critical, role in ensuring that not only is justice served but that it is also seen to be served.

Subhas is a lawyer and unless for some unforseem reasons, he would not turn down the chance to defend anyone who goes to him. This is what a lawyer is, the 1st role of any lawyer to defend his client whomever they are and whatever they have done.

I m sure he had done a few low profile cases from time to time as well, just that we dont know much about that.
