Remember readers, at the height of the Indo-China Conflict, when the Yankees were desperately trying to prop up the tottering South Vietnamese regime, we were told repeatedly, "Beware of the Domino Theory". This was a reference that the fall of Saigon would eventually lead to the fall of Malaysia and Singapore.
The forces of Ho Chi Minh sacked Saigon, renamed it Ho Chi Minh city. The Yankees ran helter-skelter onto their embassy roof-top to escape from the onslaught of legions of Vietcongs baying for blood. Helicopters fall from that roof in 1973 scenes.
Local supporters were "conveniently" abandoned in favour of their own people. The fleeing Americans had no place for their supporters. They were left to die along with thousands of Amerasians - innocent products of coital relations between Yankees and Vietnamese women.
The same thing happened when the Japanese took over Singapore and British troops ran onto vessels in our Harbour Board and naval base with their families, abandoning the locals who were their loyal supporters in uniform and other services.
Now the North Vietnamese won the Indo-China conflict and re-united Vietnam. Like the French, the Americans were booted out too.
40 years on since 1973, I am still waiting for the effect of that so-called "Domino Theory".
