let me explain how it works in the corporate world , but first thing first

in the business world , it's not the competency in your professionalism that earns you big bucks but where you are in the pecking order

so , the young Goh was the chairman ,a chairman usually is the figurative head of the company like our president and the actual person who really looks after the company affairs is the executive director , and there are other directors in the bioard of a company who are appointed for their specialization such a director who is a lawyer or an accountant or even an ex politician who may knows nuts about the company but be director of the board

so ,why is a doctor a chairman of an oil company ? the assumption here is such a person also an expert managerial material other than his profession ,hence you would find engineers heading medical company and dentist heading shipping companies and so on...but of course ,this is arbitrary as who adjudicate ones ability as a super managerial material is questionable

having said that ,we all know how this junior got his chairmanship, but how he managed from henceforth will come to play ...I suppose you would have watched the British comedy ,' Yes please Mr Prime minister ' in this satire it portrays how a PM is manipulated by the perm sec , similarly this chairmanship

Thank you for the explanation. You really didnt have to. I am aware.

Dr Goh was a few years my senior. Remember him as an MO when we were doing our hospital postings as medical students. Seemed a pretty nice guy.

With his connections he could easily have become a specialist in whatever specialty he wanted. But he did not really want to go the medical route. Hospital admin. Business.

Frankly studying medicine and then going to the corporate side is quite a waste of time.

But I guess it sort of lends some acclaim and repute when you say you are a "Dr".

But practicing a profession is not exactly a bed of roses too

I had a campus mate who excelled in law , so much so after graduation offered a post as law lecturer ,truly an academic ... some years later he went into private practice , end up quarrelling with clients and became a total failure ...and went back to being an academic and did quite well

the point being , there is a total difference being a competent professional and the art of making money ...the twein never meets

If you give customers or clients what they want you will get what you want.

The problem is when the customers want things that go against the ethics and rules your professional body has set out.

On the other hand happy customers never complain to the professional body. And the professional body really only investigates when they get complaints.

I think the system is pretty stupid. Academics teaching. Those who can do those who cant teach

I am anti academic. Those guys teach all the things that would make the professional a lousy practicing one.

to do what?as an oil trader,if he was even good at it,he could have make more than he ever could in PAP.

like peter lim

only losers join the PAP,after they realise they reached their peak and could never make it in the private sector, like that invesntment banker who became a minister.

People who join the pap these days are either looking for money or power,..................... or in some cases, mangoes.:biggrin:

Feel sorry for them. Have to close down SG branch and move to China. Boo Friggin' Hoo.

They can close down all outlets or venture into any other countries, but the iconic restaurant at Balestier must not go kaput.
