Revam RT for NSmen

THERE is a need to review the annual Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) system.

Currently, operationally ready national servicemen who fail the IPPT are compelled to attend 20 remedial training (RT) sessions of four hours each. These are held at 6pm on weekdays or 4pm on weekends and must be completed within three months.

Such a system is untenable in current societal conditions and incurs costs that are higher than the benefits.

Nowadays, people typically leave the workplace after 6pm. To attend RT, a person would have to leave the office earlier, incurring huge manpower costs.

Furthermore, if a person did three RT sessions a week, he would leave for home only at 10pm quite often over that period. Much precious time that can be spent with loved ones or enriching oneself is taken away.

Singaporean men already sacrifice a minimum of two years to serve the nation. While I agree with the need to serve the nation, where does the sacrifice end?

After factoring in mandatory in-camp training duties, RT only further removes the goodwill one might have for the nation.

So, why not just pass the IPPT in the first place, one might argue?

The IPPT comprises six stations that must be cleared. I have friends who can run full marathons but are unable to jump 1.6m or do six chin-ups. Does this mean they are unfit?

The current standards for passing IPPT are certainly due for a review.

Reservists should take SOC tests as well. SOC nowadays already very switched off compared to the past.

One of the reasons to migrate to FO this stupid reservist thing. Ridiculous.

Factory production takes in 18-25 years old girls and over 25 y.o are considered not suitable for this type of work.

Consider going to war at age 25? A bit too tough and as if life is about protecting the country? Like real, cut the crap? After 25 the role of the male is to reproduce more children for next generation and keep the economy going. At different stage of life people do different things and take different responsibilities.

I did 13 reservist cycles and never had to do any RT throughout my period of liability simply by making sure that I met the minimum fitness requirement at all times. It took less than 30 minutes a day of exercise x 5 days a week.

Those who end up having to do RT deserve whatever inconvenience they have to endure.

Of course I had a job and a very stressful one. I did my 30 minute stint in the morning at about 6 am. It fired me up for the rest of the day.

I'm sure most of the guys here are quite old and hence always here pain there pain. So why don't go get downgrade? Sinkies need to know that doing things through the 'proper' channels like newspaper forums or articles are useless.

I'm all for that. In almost every society, it is the other way round. The hardworking are taxed to death and the stupid are rewarded with free money.

Elections should also be run the same way: smart people get 3 votes while stupid people get only 1 vote.
Under the current system, 1 smart voters choice is negated by 1 stupid voters choice; and there are a whole lot more stupid people than smart ones around.

The best is get downgraded ASAP...SAF does not look after the servicemen and neither does the State, why should private citizens to continue to be burdened by BS like that?
