The mainstream media highlighted an NSman who was awarded the ‘NSmen of the
Year award’ yesterday (22 Oct).
Lieutenant-Colonel (NS) Lien, 49, who is currently the Chief of Staff of the
4th Singapore Armoured Battalion, had a quadruple heart bypass two years
ago.
After the operation, he was not duly worried about his own recovery. Instead,
he was worried about an impending in-camp training (ICT) of his battalion.
Lt-Col (NS) Lien said, “I was a bit more concerned with how the ICT would
run.”
After his surgery, he secretly went back to camp without telling his wife, to
sit in on a commanders’ meeting. He wanted to ensure that training would go like
clockwork despite his absence.
His dedication to SAF earned him the ‘NSmen of the Year award’.
Yesterday, at the NS45 Commemoration Dinner to celebrate 45 years of national
service, Lt-Col (NS) Lien was one of the 15 recipients of the award.
He said he was hungry for more action when he completed his reservist cycle
in 2001 as the OC of an armour company. He then signed up for the Reservist on
Voluntary Extended Reserve Service scheme, which allows key appointment holders
to carry on serving.
He indicated that he would like to serve a couple of years more as a
reservist.
Lt-Col (NS) Lien runs his own company. He is the MD of Amos International, a
home-grown marine and offshore procurement and logistics firm.
He is lucky that nothing happened to him when he went back to camp while,
presumably, on medical leave. Had he died in the meeting room, he would have
caused a lot of trouble for his CO.
