Lau Min Hann, a decorated student leader and young Singapore Armed Forces officer, passed away at the age of 25 due to cancer.

Lau, who was named Republic Polytechnic’s (RP) Most Outstanding Graduate in 2024, was known for his commitment to service, leadership and gratitude, stated a Jan. 18 obituary posted to Death Kopitiam's Facebook page.

He was the president of RP's student council and was also involved in grassroots and volunteer initiatives at Nee Soon South during his time as a student.

Lau passed away on Jan. 17 after suffering a severe ischaemic stroke — which is when a blood clot blocks an artery supplying blood to the brain — caused by complications from leukaemia.

His father took to Facebook to mourn his son, stating that "we are like in a dream. Everything seems real and yet unreal."

"The pain is like finding a sniper in the dark. No clue where at or from, but gets hit as and when."
Former Member of Parliament (MP) Carrie Tan has also penned a tribute to Lau on Instagram.

"You can literally see the multitude of lives that he’s touched in the short 25 years he has lived. Many who have been touched by his courage and his caring. He was already the role model and leader he was aspiring to be."

RP's most outstanding graduate in 2024

Aside from serving as RP's student council president and secretary-general of the OneRP Community, Lau also represented the institution on REACH Singapore’s Youth Advisory Panel.

According to an RP Instagram post from 2024, Lau was passionate about aviation and had long aspired to pursue a career in the field.

However, his academic journey was not always smooth.

He shared that his grades while studying in Malaysia were “less than ideal”, but he was grateful to RP for allowing him to pursue a diploma in aerospace engineering.

He also graduated in 2024 as the recipient of RP's Board of Governors Award for Most Outstanding Graduate of the Year.

Following his graduation, Lau was offered a double degree in Engineering and Business Administration at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the NUS Merit Scholarship, alongside an engineering placement opportunity at King’s College London, Death Kopitiam wrote.

Selected for Officer Cadet School in NS

According to Lau's LinkedIn, he was selected for Officer Cadet School at the SAFTI Military Institute and later served in the Singapore Armed Forces as a Platoon Commander (Combat Engineers).

Due to his stellar performance, he was recommended for early promotion and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant for Deputy Battalion Operations in January 2026.
