Officers conduct investigations at the crime site

SINGAPORE : A man was found dead in an open field along Kallang Road. A passer-by spotted the body and alerted a security guard at condominium Riverine by the Park next to the field.

And it was the guard who called the police at around 7.30am. According to the guard, the dead man's head was covered in blood.

He was dressed in a brown T-shirt and black pants. More than 10 officers were deployed to the scene where a forensic team spent the whole morning conducting investigations.

Police spokesperson Yvonne Edwin said: "The body of a man, believed to be Indian, was found at the said location. He was pronounced dead by the paramedics at about 8am.

Police have classified the case as murder and investigations are currently ongoing. Anybody with information should call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000." - CNA /ls

Man found murdered along Kallang Road
Unidentified body was found with cuts on neck, torso and arm

by Leong Wee Keat
05:55 AM May 31, 2010

SINGAPORE - Security officers Shashi Kumar and M Malathi were 30 minutes from finishing their shift yesterday morning, when they were alerted by a pedestrian that a man had reportedly fallen into a nearby drain. But both officers stumbled upon something more grisly - a man was found lying motionless in an open field along Kallang Road, adjacent to the Riverine By The Park condominium.

Lying face up, his eyes and mouth were open and his head was covered with blood. The security officers immediately called the police. The man, believed to be Indian, was pronounced dead by paramedics at 8am yesterday. Wearing a grey T-shirt, black pants and black shoes, the body was found with cuts on his neck, torso and arm. No identification papers were found on him.

As investigators combed through the open field - the size of four football fields - for clues, those working and living around the field said they did not suspect anything was amiss. Security officers Kumar and Malathi said the area, which is near Kallang Riverside Park, was mostly quiet on Saturday nights. A group of workers living at a construction site just 100m away from where the body was found also did not hear any shouts or cries for help.

They told MediaCorp they had gone to sleep at 9pm on Saturday and all the men had been accounted for. News of the grisly discovery yesterday attracted some Indian foreign workers living near the crime scene. One of them claimed his friend had been missing for the last three days. As the body was taken away by undertakers, police dogs were called in to comb the field.

Police have classified the case as murder and investigations are in progress.

Anyone with information on the case should call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000.

At 7.30am, the body of a man with visible knife wounds to his upper body was found lying in an open field next to a condominium near Kallang MRT station.

He had been slashed on the head, arms and upper body. One of the guards, Ms M. Malathy, 34, said: "His mouth and his eyes were open... there was blood."

In the other three attacks, the victims' ages ranged between 17 and 44. It is not known yet whether the four cases are connected.

Police spokesman Yvonne Edwin told The Straits Times that they are investigating and "have not ruled out any of the possibilities".

Earlier yesterday morning, police had responded to three other attacks within walking distance of where the dead man's body was found.

At about 12.15am, a 24-year-old man was slashed at Block 44 Sims Drive. He suffered multiple cuts to his body, mostly to his head and left arm.

pic11.jpg

Barely 30 minutes after the 12.15 attack, a 44-year-old man was slashed on the hands and head – this time at Kallang MRT station.
At about 7am, police and paramedics responded to another call along the Pan-Island Expressway, near the Sims Avenue exit. There, they found a 17-year-old boy with multiple fractures and a few of his fingers hacked off.

All three are being treated in hospital.

Witnesses to the attacks should call the police on 1800-255-0000.

A FULL-TIME national serviceman, one of four victims of a series of knife attacks in Kallang on Sunday, lay bleeding by the Pan-Island Expressway for seven hours before he was spotted. Half his left hand, along with four fingers had been hacked off, and he had deep cuts to his neck, face and abdomen; a part of his scalp had been sliced open. But at least Mr Ang Jun Heng, 19, was alive. Of the remaining three victims of the still-unknown slasher or slashers, one is dead, and the other two, like Mr Ang, are in intensive care at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The police said yesterday that they had yet to make an arrest. They declined to comment when asked whether the attacks were the work of one person or several, nor would they confirm whether or not the attacks were related. All the police spokesman would say was that investigations were ongoing and no possibilities had been ruled out. The four victims appear not to have known each other. Aside from Mr Ang, the other three, including the dead man, are Indian nationals aged between 24 and 44. Here on work permits, they live and work in different places.

Kallang slashings: 3 held

POLICE have arrested three men linked to a series of brutal slash-and-rob cases in Kallang, which left one victim dead and three serious injured on Sunday. The suspects, Malaysians aged between 21 and 26, were picked up on Monday night after a 24-hour police operation that was rare in both its scale and intensity. The more than 100 officers deployed included those from the Special Operations Command, Bedok and Central Police Divisions, the Police Intelligence Department and the Criminal Investigation Department.

The Straits Times had reported that over seven hours on Sunday, four slashing cases took place in the Kallang area between midnight and 7.30am. The victims included a 41-year-old Indian national who was found dead at an open field along Kallang Road. The injured victims, who included a teenager who lost four of his fingers, were attacked at the Pan Island Expressway near the Sims Way exit, Block 44 Sims Drive and Kallang MRT.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, the police said the modus operandi, the timing and proximity of the four incidents meant they did not rule out the possibility that they could have been committed by the same perpetrators. All four victims had been slashed and robbed. Police are now searching for four more suspects who they believe are linked to the cases. CID director Ng Boon Gay said: 'I would like to reassure the public that the police do not tolerate such vicious and violent acts of crime.

We will spare no efforts to hunt down the perpetrators and ensure that they are dealt with to the full extent of the law.'
He also commended the officers for their effort in putting a stop to the 'brutal crime spree'. Murder is punishable by the death penalty, while gang robbery with hurt attracts a maximum jail term of 20 years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.

SINGAPORE: A gang of seven was believed to have been responsible for the recent spate of attacks in the Kallang area on Sunday, which left one man dead and three others seriously injured.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said on Tuesday that three Malaysians have been arrested in connection with the attacks.

They are aged between 21 and 26 years old and were nabbed near Syed Alwi Road between 6pm and 10pm on Monday evening.

All three came from Sarawak and were general workers living in a dormitory in the area. Four other suspects are still at large but CID has vowed to "go all out" to hunt them down.

Investigations are still ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining four suspects and also to determine if the suspects were involved in any previous cases of robbery.

Calling the crimes "vicious and violent", the CID said the men were caught after a 24-hour large scale island-wide operation that saw 100 police officers deployed to crack the crimes.

The three arrested will be charged in court tomorrow with murder and armed robbery with hurt. An Indian construction worker was slashed to death and his body was found in an open field near the Kallang MRT station.

Three others were also viciously slashed and are now in the intensive care unit at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. They were robbed a total of S$400 and three handphones. - CNA/vm

<!-- story content : start --> FIVE men who carried out what police described as a 'cruel' and 'inhumane' spate of attacks in the Kallang area on Sunday have been arrested after an operation involving more than 100 policemen. The five, all Sarawakians who worked here as cleaners and odd-job labourers, went on a planned orgy of violent theft which has rarely been seen here. The men, some of whom stayed at a Syed Alwi Road lodging house, are believed to have hatched their crimes with two others. The gang went on a knife-wielding rampage that left one person dead, two others in intensive care and another with half his palm hacked off - all for $400 cash and three cellphones.

Police have mounted a huge manhunt in several areas for the remaining two suspects who are believed to be part of the same gang. The gang may also be responsible for one or two other similar slash-and-rob incidents in the area recently. Said Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Ng Boon Gay: 'What the group had done was very violent. They not only robbed people of some small items... some mobile phones and cash... they caused harm and killed one of them. These are all innocent victims. They had nothing to do with the culprits.'

A MAN from Sarawak was charged with the murder of a construction worker while two others were accused of gang robbery. In the same court, Sylvester Barogok, 26, and Shahman Milak, 21, both also from Sarawak, were charged with committing gang robbery of a mobile phone, cash of $32, a work permit card and an ez-link card from Mr Raja Kana Kazi under an overhead bridge at Sims Drive last Friday evening.

The duo were allegedly with Micheal, Hairee Landak, 19, Tony Imba, 31, and Donny Meluda, 19, one or more of whom were armed with a parang. All three were remanded at Central police division lock-up for further investigation. They will appear in court on Wednesday. If convicted of murder, Micheal faces the death penalty. The maximum punishment for gang robbery is a jail term of five to 20 years and not less than 12 strokes of the cane

I say good work by our Home Team and those eye witness who aided in the capture of those inhumane criminals. Likewise if they are found guilty and convicted the punishment shouldn't fall short of hanging as they have terrorised the innocents and brought unfounded terror to this country who has opened their shores to them by giving them employement that their country of origin couldn't. A strong signal should be sent that such hideous crimes are not tolerated here and the judgment and punishment meted are equivalent to the crime commited which is the gallows. Hang them by the balls I say for much do I care for the misery they have brought to others. Singapore used to be a very safe country when one can loiter at any hour of the time and not fear one's safety. And then this have to happen. Pity those innocent victims and slaughter those guilty and show no mercy.

Slashed so badly, fingers were left dangling

Slashed so badly, fingers were left dangling
By Arul John
June 02, 2010

One victim of the Kallang slashings, construction worker Sandeep Singh, 23, was slashed twice on his head, once on his lower back and several times on his left forearm and hand.

The last three fingers of his left hand were so badly cut that they were left dangling.

Mr Singh needed an eight-hour operation at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) to re-attach the fingers and stitch up his other wounds.

The Indian national was walking from Geylang Lorong 17 back to his flat at Block 44, Sims Drive, close to midnight on Saturday when he saw five or six men near a playground, carrying "long knives".

After taking his mobile phone, $100 in cash, his work permit and a cheque for $1,000 from his employer, the attackers fled.

On Monday night, the police nabbed three Sarawakian men, aged between 21 and 26, in connection with Mr Shanmuganathan's death and the other attacks.

The police made two more arrests at the Woodlands Checkpoint last night. One of the two men is believed to be involved in the murder.
