One of the suspect Hairee Landak's employer, who runs Naz Cleaning Services, said the man – his only employee from Sarawak – had been working for him for six months. Hairee lived in Johor, he said.

"He usually cleans boutique shops from 8.30am to 1pm, and has generally been a good worker. This is not his first job in Singapore, but I do not know how long he had been working here," he said.

Over at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, where arrested suspect Peter Usit Musa works as a fruit packer, his employer, Ms Irene Kee of Lai Soon Fresh Fruits, said he had been staying at her brother's construction company office at Stirling Road.

"Last week, he had asked for two days off from work to go to Johor Baru for a celebration, and I allowed him to go off for one day on Tuesday," she said. She said the Sarawakian had worked as a sweeper before joining the company in July last year. "He was generally quiet and kept to himself at work," she said.

SINGAPORE : Five people believed to have been involved in the recent spate of attacks in the Kallang area, which left one man dead and three others seriously injured, appeared before a district court Wednesday morning.

The quintet from Sarawak, who are between 19 and 31 years old, work as general workers in Singapore. Prosecutors asked that Micheal Garing, Tony Imba, Hairee Landak, Shahman Milak and Sylvester Baragok be detained for another week to assist in investigations.

They are currently in remand at Central Police Division and will be back in court June 16. Another gang member, Peter Usit Musa, is also expected in court Thursday. The six men were arrested after an intensive police operation was mounted to track down the perpetrators behind a series of armed robberies which occurred in the vicinity of Sims Drive and Geylang on May 30.

19-year-old Donny Meluda, who is also believed to be part of the robberies, is still at large. The attacks left 41-year-old Indian national Shanmuganathan Dillidurai dead. Micheal Garing was charged last week with the murder. He allegedly committed the murder with Tony Imba, and Hairee Landak.

Meanwhile, gang members Sylvester Barogok, and Shahman Milak, are also accused of committing gang robbery. If convicted of murder, Micheal faces the death penalty. The rest could be jailed between five and 20 years and receive not less than 12 strokes of the cane for armed robbery. - TODAY/jy

THREE Sarawakians accused of murdering an Indian national in Kallang on Wednesday faced fresh charges for a series of armed and gang robbery. Micheal Garing, 22, Hairee Landak, 20, and Tony Imba, 31, face between five and seven charges each. The trio were earlier charged with the murder of construction worker Shanmugam Dillidurai, 41, at the open field along Kallang Road near a condominium on May 30. A fourth man, Donny Meluda, 19, is on the run.

In two of the fresh cases, they are said to have slashed their victims - Mr Sandeep Singh, 24, and full-time national serviceman (NSF) Ang Jun Heng, 18 - during the robberies. In another case against Micheal and Tony, they allegedly hit the victim, Mr F.M. Noman Md Faizur Rahman, 34, on the head with a piece of rock, punched and kicked him during the hold-up under an MRT track behind Sims Ville Condominium between May 27 and 28. Meanwhile, a seventh Malaysian was brought to court to face gang robbery charges.

Landa Sulai, 27, was initially charged a week ago with robbing Indian national Raja Jana Kazi, 20, of his cellphone, $32, work permit and ez-Link cards while one of more of them was armed with a parang. His alleged accomplices are: Micheal, Hairee, Tony, Donny, Peter Usit Musa, 22, Sylvester Barogok, 26, and Shahman Milak, 21. Except for Shahman, Micheal, Hairee, Tony, Peter, Sylvester and Landa are alleged to have robbed Chinese national Wang Jiuseng, 47, of his $300 cellphone at an open field along Sims Place on May 28 night. Micheal, Hairee and Tony were remanded until July 7 for psychiatric examination while the rest will be back in court in two weeks.

General worker Micheal Garing, 22, is accused of murdering construction worker Shanmuganathan Dillidurai.

<!-- story content : start -->
A GANG of men accused of the Kallang slashings last month may be responsible for more crimes than originally thought. At least three more robberies - of a foreign national, an elderly man and a Chinese national - have allegedly been traced back to them. The alleged offences took place mostly in the Kallang area as well, between May 27 and 30, during a crime spree which culminated in the fatal slashing of an Indian construction worker in an open field.

In court yesterday, all but one of the seven Sarawakians - Shahman Milak, 21 - faced fresh charges of armed robbery, gang robbery and/or robbery with hurt. Three general workers - Micheal Garing, 22, Hairee Landak, 19, and Tony Imba, 31 - have also been brought to court for allegedly murdering Mr Shanmuganathan Dillidurai, 41, on May 30. The other four who were charged earlier with gang robbery are: Shahman Milak, Sylvester Barogok, 26, Peter Usit Musa, 22, and Landa Sulai, 27, who was the last to be brought to court last week for allegedly robbing Mr Raja Kana Kazi at Sims Drive on May 28.

SINGAPORE : The first of the Kallang gangsters linked to the violent attacks in May, in which an Indian national was stabbed to death, was sentenced on Friday.

Shahman Anak Milak, 21, was jailed two years and given six strokes of the cane for attempted robbery on May 26.

The court heard that he and his two accomplices, while having a chat in Shahman's rented room in Geylang, came up with the scheme to attack foreign workers.

Shahman, together with Micheal Anak Garing and Hairee Anak Landak, targeted a foreign worker near Aljunied MRT Station, but the foreign worker escaped.

The trio fled the scene and ran to Geylang Lorong 11 to look for other victims but were unsuccessful.

Micheal's and Hairee's cases will be dealt with by the court at a later date.

Micheal, 22, is believed to be the mastermind behind the spate of terror attacks that resulted in the death of 41-year-old Indian national Shanmuganathan Dillidurai.

The alleged offences took place mostly in the Kallang area between May 27 and 30.

Five other people were also stabbed during the crime spree.

Both Micheal and Hairee have been charged with the Indian national's murder and face the death penalty if convicted. - CNA /ls

SINGAPORE : A Bangladeshi cleaner who was hurt in the Kallang slashing case earlier this year has told the court that he was unable to identify his assailants.

This is even though three of those accused of hurting the 21-year-old stood before him in the dock on Monday.

On the first day of a 10-day trial involving the trio, Raja Jana Kazi told District Judge Paul Quan that one of his assailants used a knife to slash the left side of his head.

Pointing to a scar near his forehead, the visibly nervous young man added that about six or seven people attacked him under an overhead bridge near Block 41 Sims Drive between 9pm and midnight on May 28.

He also said that the group robbed him of S$30 cash, a mobile phone and an EZ-link card.

The three Malaysians - 26-year-old cleaner Slyvester Beragok, 22-year-old deliveryman Peter Usit Musa and 28-year-old labourer Landa Sulai - were unrepresented.

They looked calm as they cross examined Mr Raja and Peter was even spotted smiling to himself on several occasions.

Besides Mr Raja, the prosecution will be calling on eight other witnesses.

They include 46-year-old China national Wang Jiu Sheng, who was robbed under an MRT track near Lorong 17 Geylang that evening.

The group allegedly made off with the construction worker's mobile phone worth S$230.

It is believed the trio committed these offences with three other alleged accomplices, 20-year-old Hairee Landak, 22-year-old Micheal Garing and 32-year-old Tony Imba.

Hairee, Micheal and Tony have also been charged with the murder of a 41-year-old Indian construction worker, Shanmuganathan Dillidurai.

Their case will be mentioned again on December 29.

To date, one man has already admitted that he was involved in the crime spree.

Twenty-two-year-old technician Shahman Milak was part of a group that attempted to rob an unknown man under an MRT track near Sims Avenue on May 26.

He was sentenced to two years' jail and six strokes of the cane on October 1.

Kallang slashings: 2 jailed for gang robbery

By Elena Chong

TWO of the seven men arrested for the Kallang slashings were sentenced to six years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on Thursday for gang robbery. Cleaner Sylvester Beragok, 26, and labourer Landa Sulai, 28, both from Sarawak, had originally claimed trial, together with Peter Usit Musa, 22, to the charges.

Sylvester and Landa changed their pleas to guilty, after the court had ruled that their statements to the police were made voluntarily. Peter, however, maintains his innocence and his trial is ongoing.

Sylvester and Landa admitted robbing Chinese national Wang Jiu Sheng, 47, of his $230 mobile phone when one or more of the duo's accomplices had used a parang. The attack took place at a grass path beside the pavement under the MRT track near Lorong 17 Geylang on May 28 2010.

Three of their accomplices, Micheal Garing, 22, Hairee Landak, 21, and Tony Imba, 32, are facing a murder charge each and the matter is still at pre-trial conference stage. In the gang robbery, Mr Wang suffered a deep cut of four fingers on his left hand.

Last October, another East Malaysian, Shahman Milak, 21, was given two years and ordered to be given six strokes of the cane for attempted robbery. The duo could have been jailed for up to 20 years and caned.

Those guys slashed first and then robbed their victims.
How can this be considered gang robbery? Shouldn't robbery be when you threaten the victims with harm first?
Nobody has bothered to explain why these men were so vicious or desperate, such that they attacked their victims first and then took their belongings.
The people who brought them into the country should also be held accountable.

Kallang slashings: Another accused jailed

By Elena Chong

usitmusa-spf.jpg

Peter Usit Musa, 22, a former deliveryman, changed his plea to guilty in the midst of his defence. -- PHOTO: SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE

ANOTHER Malaysian was convicted of gang robbery in the Kallang slashing case and given six years and 12 strokes of the cane on Friday.

Peter Usit Musa, 22, a former deliveryman, changed his plea to guilty in the midst of his defence. He had been tried together with Slyvester Beragok, 26, and Landa Sulai, 28 on two gang robbery charges.

Slyvester and Landa pleaded guilty on Thursday and were each given six years and 12 strokes for robbing Chinese national Wang Jiu Sheng, 47, of his $230 mobile phone on May 28, 2010.

One or more of the gang used a parang at the time. Three others allegedly involved in the gang robbery - Micheal Garing, 22, Hairee Landak, 21, and Tony Imba, 32 - are in remand, pending their High Court trial for murder.

The court heard that the gang was in the Kallang area looking for potential victims to rob when they saw Mr Wang, a construction worker, squatting and talking on the phone at the grass patch under the MRT track near Lorong 17 Geylang.

Tony picked up a rock from the ground and hit the Chinese national on the back of his head, causing him to fall forward.

Others joined in to kick and punch the victim, who ran but tripped and fell into a drain. When he tried to get up, Micheal slashed him with a parang, resulting in a deep cut of four fingers on his left hand.

Peter, whose sentence was backdated to June 3, could have been jailed for up to 20 years for the gang robbery.

Kallang slasher's charge upgraded to murder

By Elena Chong

Tony Imba, 32, from Sarawak, is facing another murder charge following the death of the victim. -- ST PHOTO: LAU FOOK KONG

ONE of the three Kallang slashers facing a capital charge was slapped with another murder charge following the death of the victim.

Tony Imba, 32, from Sarawak, is now in custody with fellow Malaysians Micheal Garing, 22, and Hairee Landak, 20, for the alleged murder of construction worker Shanmuganathan Dillidurai, 41, at an open field along Kallang Road near to a condominium on May 30 2010.

Their case is at pre-trial stage.

When the trio's case came up for mention in court via video-link on Wednesday, the prosecution tendered a charge of murder against Tony to replace one of the robbery-with-hurt charges he is facing.

Originally accused of robbing Mr Jefrrey Tan Hong, 63, and hitting his head with a block of wood, he is now accused of causing his death at a footpath behind Block 25 Jalan Berseh on May 30 2010.

Mr Tan - who was in coma after the alleged attack - died recently.

So far, four of the Sarawakians have been convicted and jailed. One was given two years and six strokes for attempted robbery while three got six years and 12 strokes each, for robbing a Chinese construction worker of a $230 mobile phone from under the MRT tracks near Lorong 17 Geylang in May 2010, while armed with a parang.

Looking at the past postings... Senseless slashing and killing just for a few hundred of dollars! Might as well rob a bank or something... Hope they get the Death sentence.

Trial of 'Kallang Slashers'

Two men from Sarawak, allegedly involved in a spate of violent robberies in 2010, on Thursday went on trial in the High Court for the murder of one of the victims, a construction worker from India.

The lawyers for Micheal Garing, 25, and Tony Imba, 34, said that evidence relating to the three prior incidents was not helpful in establishing proof and was prejudicial to their clients.

The evidence includes statements given by the accused to the police and witness testimonies.

But the prosecution said the evidence would go to show that they both intended to cause fatal injuries to Mr Shanmuganathan Dillidurai, 41, when Micheal allegedly slashed the Indian national with a parang.

The trial was adjourned to next Tuesday for both sides to make arguments on whether the evidence should be admitted.

Micheal and Tony are accused of being in a group of four men who carried out four violent robberies from the late night of May 29 to the early hours of May 30.

The assaults led to the death of a foreign worker and seriously injured two foreign workers and a Singaporean.

The group were Sarawakians working here.

One alleged accomplice, Donny Meluda, 22, is at large.
