Her bro had a set of three samurai swords on display in his living room. Oda Nobunaga replica set. I wasn't sure sharpened or not. Better not take the risk.

I might be feeling naughty now and then (as every healthy guy would) but frankly, his sis was already prime prize. Some naughty thoughts did come and pass but got forgotten. We're all men, yes? They treated and took care of me very well, why the hell whould I betray them on a moment of naughty folly?

Close But Never Close

Good map, Conqueror. A more modern comparison to the ancient development of China would be USA. It started with a few colonial states, then 13 states declaring independence from Britain, actually winning the war to draw the line with Britain at Canada. The southern power was then Mexico. With the mid-west vacuum they quickly filled in and forced Mexico to concede California, New Mexico and Texas to them to become the continental sized country they are now. It was also what the Chinese Art Of War called, 天时,人和,地利。The native Red Indians and Mexicans were no match for their mechanised firepower. The British and French were too busy at European homefronts over the Napoleonic wars and both thought the Americas could always be settled later. It became a monster bigger than them.

It's both a good thing and a bad thing to be an advanced super power in the region. The culture of China spread all over the place including the great Roman Empire. These people just loved the Chinese porcelain called China. Silk from China plus the famous purple dye from Phoenicia is deadly combo ! The Romans just could not resist it.

With technology so advanced that regional countries were copying and using these Chinese inventions was like a lopsided affair. So, China had the tendency not to trade with these poor neighbours and it often closed its door on the faces of these barbarians.

Closing the door is a bad habit for China. You just won't know who is now ahead of you. PRC is still a backward country when its people mentality could not keep up with time. Were they 20 years backward ?

Re: Close But Never Close

Closing doors was traditional bad China habit out superiority complex, i.e. we had everything and we knew everything, so fuck off. However after the Qing/ROC/PRC era, Chinese had learnt their lesson. The open door policy as of now, foreigners come as you want, locals leave as you want, would make ancient emperors toss in their graves.

Most have only 2 as a daisho arrangement. Agree, just a tanto will do even unsharpened as it can already be used to stab right out of the saya.

Not surprising, since Confucius and even Three Kingdoms are in Japanese school syllabus. Japan had been good friend of China for some two thousand years since the Yamato founding. The first conflicts started because Japan wanted Korea and Ryukyu (Okinawa) and Ming Dynasty China sided with Korea. A few hundred years later, toward the end of Qing Dynasty China, Japan wanted Taiwan and Manchukuo (Manchuria) and it escalated to all-out Sino-Japanese war.

it was hideyoshi who showed japanese samurai that there were more lands to rule and fight on than just the japanese islands. he, of peasant-servant stock, obviously was devoid of historical education, the samurai code and the more inward looking ways of traditional samurai. so he invaded korea with an eye for the huge provinces of ming china. korea just happened to be the unlucky beachhead because of her geography and proximity to japan. imjimwaeren is the period of war known to the koreans. hideyoshi's generals failed after initial successes, but managed to ship hundreds of thousands of korean ears and noses as war trophies to kyoto, where they were buried. the mound is still there, but no one in japan wishes to talk about it. after the demise of hideyoshi, tokugawa, a true samurai of samurai birth, went back to the traditional samurai ways and closed japan up, but kept nagasaki open for trade with china.

You're very well up with Japanese history. Next time I go to SF, let's meet up at Nihonmachi. My favorite is lunch or dinner at Mifune there.

Aiya ! Of course, I know. I 领教过 the last time regarding the "the Shang heritage" thing and "the people in the west are quite dumb to make nicknames as their last names". LOL

I believe those nicks could be Sam khor in disguise.

Homogeneous society like Japan and Korea should just stick to a tight policy to prevent foreigners from flooding their cities. Heterogeneous one like Sinkiesland or USA ... hard to say.

I'm not joking. My US boss said this to me when I first arrived at his office...

Boss : Take a look around, that's your desk. Tomorrow morning, you go to SSO to apply for an SSN.

Ram : Can apply just like that? You don't have come along or give me company letter?

Boss : Your passport and visa are in order, right?

Ram : Sure.

Boss : Then there's no problem, you go settle your SSN first so you can a open bank account without W8 restriction.

Next morning...

SSO : You're Singaporean, foreigner, why do you want to apply for SSN?

Ram : Oh, I'm planning to work here, and on probation, still need a bank account and pay tax, right?

SSO : Oh, OK. approved.

Ram : Can I get an ID card?

SSO : Sure, about 20 blocks down the road is DMV. You can get your drivers' license or ID card there.

Ram : Thanks so much. Can I belanjah you dinner tonight?

SSO : Huh? What's belanjah?

Ram : Oh sorry, slip of tongue, that's Singapore pidgin for offering a treat.

SSO : Yeah right, in American pidgin, it's for offering a bribe.

Ram : OK OK ma'am, I get the point. If there's nothing else, can I go now?

SSO : Sure, but after all's done, a treat is no longer a bribe, my card is one the counter, take one.
