Close But Never Close

Good map, Conqueror. A more modern comparison to the ancient development of China would be USA. It started with a few colonial states, then 13 states declaring independence from Britain, actually winning the war to draw the line with Britain at Canada. The southern power was then Mexico. With the mid-west vacuum they quickly filled in and forced Mexico to concede California, New Mexico and Texas to them to become the continental sized country they are now. It was also what the Chinese Art Of War called, 天时，人和，地利。The native Red Indians and Mexicans were no match for their mechanised firepower. The British and French were too busy at European homefronts over the Napoleonic wars and both thought the Americas could always be settled later. It became a monster bigger than them.

It's both a good thing and a bad thing to be an advanced super power in the region. The culture of China spread all over the place including the great Roman Empire. These people just loved the Chinese porcelain called China. Silk from China plus the famous purple dye from Phoenicia is deadly combo ! The Romans just could not resist it.

With technology so advanced that regional countries were copying and using these Chinese inventions was like a lopsided affair. So, China had the tendency not to trade with these poor neighbours and it often closed its door on the faces of these barbarians.

Closing the door is a bad habit for China. You just won't know who is now ahead of you. PRC is still a backward country when its people mentality could not keep up with time. Were they 20 years backward ?

Closing doors was traditional bad China habit out superiority complex, i.e. we had everything and we knew everything, so fuck off. However after the Qing/ROC/PRC era, Chinese had learnt their lesson. The open door policy as of now, foreigners come as you want, locals leave as you want, would make ancient emperors toss in their graves.

Most have only 2 as a daisho arrangement. Agree, just a tanto will do even unsharpened as it can already be used to stab right out of the saya.

Not surprising, since Confucius and even Three Kingdoms are in Japanese school syllabus. Japan had been good friend of China for some two thousand years since the Yamato founding.
