Re: Super Android

I heard their map sux big time. Mine is fantastic - an LG (very accurate GPS locator on map) with details and "live" streaming of info to suggest places around your location to dine or 'check it out'. :p

With Spore being so small, do you really need a map:confused:

I read that Apple has a lockdown on the team responsible for the mapping, they can't go home until they fix the problem;)
I try to avoid anything that is new because there is a greater chance of teething problems of any major changes like the iPhone 5

For GPS Mapping in iPhone, Papago M8 or M6 is among the best, independent from iOS 6 mapping flaws.

Opinion: Without Steve Jobs is Apple JATPC?

Apple Maps reveals the chink in Apple's armor. Is it the first nail in the company's coffin?

I just cancelled my order for an iPhone 5. Why? Because, it’s becoming clear that, without Steve Jobs, Apple is turning into JATPC, “Just Another Tech Products Company."

I base that judgment on only one thing, Apple’s new Maps app in iOS 6. Jobs never would have let such an abomination leave Apple headquarters. And, it makes me wonder what other hardware and software surprises are lurking in the iPhone 5 and iOS 6. So, I cancelled the order and I wish I could revert my iPhone 4S and iPad 3 to iOS 5.

Apple Maps Alleged 3D Satellite Images.

What’s Wrong with Apple Maps?

Well, you’ve probably seen a lot of the criticism already. One of my biggest gripes is about the alleged 3D satellite images. Not sure how the 3D quality is created, but I don’t think it has much to do with reality. The front of the building I live in certainly doesn’t look like it does in Apple Maps.

In fact everything looks like a kind of poor, cartoonish attempt to render the original satellite images in 3D. And, two-fingered changing perspective on the images is clunky with the change being very limited, leaving most buildings looking like pancakes when viewed as close to head-on as possible in the app.

Then there are things like what the Los Angeles Times called “an apocalyptic depiction of the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge”. And, did Apple think we’d not notice the absence of the cool 180 degree ground-level images of almost every street in Google Maps?

I have always liked iOS devices over Android devices mainly because you can upgrade the OS without buying a new device and iPhone and iPad touch sensitivity is much better than on Android phones and tablets. I use devices running both OSes – iPhone 4S and iPad 3 just upgraded to iOS 6 , and recently acquired Android 4.0 (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1) and 4.1 (Google Nexus 7) tablets. I use the Android devices almost exclusively for content consumption and the iOS devices for content consumption and, because I can precisely locate the cursor with my finger, for content creation.

Up until now, it was a no-brainer when it came time to buy a new iOS device. I’m an early adopter and, while I don’t feel the need to stand in line on day one, I’m still online ordering the latest on the first or second day. So, true to form, I ordered my iPhone 5 the day after online ordering opened.

When I first noted that I’d have to wait two-to-three weeks for delivery, I was a bit pissed at the wait. However, after struggling with Apple Maps, pissed became pleased, because the delay gave me the opportunity to get out of my order. And, I did. I want to see how things go with both the iPhone 5 and apps.

There are rumors that Google is going to submit Google Maps as an iOS app. If Apple lets the app fly or quickly improves Apple Maps, the way it tried to solve the iPhone 4’s Wi-Fi antenna problem that even Steve missed, maybe I’ll reorder an iPhone 5.

Some will say I am overreacting to a minor problem with one app in iOS 6. Perhaps that’s true.

However, I’ve been in the tech business for a long time and I’ve gotten pretty good at seeing trends pretty early on. Having studied Steve Jobs management style closely, it’s clear that his painfully detailed, but highly successful approach to the creation of new products is what brought Apple out of near bankruptcy and into a position as the number one tech company both in terms of products and sales. That sort of hard headed, but passionately creative aesthetically minded style is rare and I’m thinking right now that Apple is on the verge of joining has-been companies like Microsoft and Intel that long ago lost their spark.

Will there be another player as great as Michael Jordan? Definitely...but so far haven appear yet leh...maybe not even in our lifetime...psst...actually i really hate Ah Job but must admit he did a great job leading Apple to where they are 2day...:D:D

I was wondering why Apple made a switch to their own mapping system.

It seems that Google did not want to implement voice guided directions. Google wanted to maintain that exclusive feature for the Android platform:eek:
They also wanted more "control"

Apple's Split with Google Over iOS Maps Driven by Turn-by-Turn Navigation Dispute

Reports about the high-profile split between Apple and Google that saw Apple replace its Google-powered Maps app for iOS with its own solution have continued to trickle out, with AllThingsD now reporting that the lack of turn-by-turn directions on Google's Maps app for iOS was the key motivator for Apple.

[M]ultiple sources familiar with Apple’s thinking say the company felt it had no choice but to replace Google maps with its own because of a disagreement over a key feature: Voice-guided turn-by-turn driving directions.

Spoken turn-by-turn navigation has been a free service offered through Google’s Android mobile OS for a few years now. But it was never part of the deal that brought Google’s maps to iOS. And Apple very much wanted it to be. Requiring iPhone users to look directly at handsets for directions and manually move through each step while Android users enjoyed native voice-guided instructions put Apple at a clear disadvantage in the mobile space. And having chosen Google as its original mapping partner, the iPhone-maker was now in a position where an arch rival was calling the shots on functionality important to the iOS maps feature set.
Apple reportedly pushed hard for voice navigation in Google's maps on iOS, but Google was unwilling to hand over the functionality without concessions from Apple. As detailed by other sources, Google was seeking greater control over the mapping experience on the iPhone, such as Google branding and Google Latitude integration, concessions Apple was unwilling to make.

Combined with the deterioration of the overall Apple-Google relationship and Apple's concerns that Google was collecting too much information from iOS users, Apple ramped up its mapping efforts in order to bring its own turn-by-turn directions to the device, ultimately deciding that it could afford to do away entirely with Google's maps.

I still think its great for getting around without using that stupid Mighty Minds' map. The map cramped too many things. With the soft map you can switch off MRT lines, orientation preferences (not necessarily North = top but it can be in a user's orientation), continuous instead of broken up pieces for ease of finding, zooming in (details) and out (satellite bird eye view). Better than flipping map in the car.

Apple's maps: its worst software product yet?

art-674824134-620x349.jpg

Embarrassing, appalling, illogical, incomplete, erroneous — these words are rarely used to describe Apple's products but all and more have been applied to Apple Maps in what observers are calling Apple's least usable piece of software yet.

The fiasco will take “quite some time” to fix due to a lack of expertise and “C-grade” data, mapping experts say, while Google is reportedly months away from releasing a Google Maps app for iOS.

Apple hastily launched its own mapping service earlier this month when it began providing the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform iOS 6 and started selling the iPhone 5. The negative responses flowed thick and fast and Apple was accused of putting its battle with Google ahead of customers.

Users have complained that Apple Maps, based on a mish-mash of data from firms such as TomTom and Yelp, contains glaring errors and omissions, misplaces entire towns, suffers from numerous visual defects, lacks detail and provides dangerous directions.

New York Times gadget reviewer David Pogue today declared maps “an appalling first release” and possibly “the most embarrassing, least usable piece of software Apple has ever unleashed”. Pogue says it will take “a very long time” to fix, as all fixes need to be made individually by hand.

I've done my fair share of travelling & although I sometimes get disoriented, I've eventually found my way. Maybe it's because of the excellent topo training I received during NS:p

I may get a smartphone when my dumb phone dies but my SE phone is still going strong. Sometimes it's not a good idea to get too reliant on a device.
