Confirmed I'm going to stick with window 7. If I'm forced to take up window 8, I'll throw it out of the window and get a Mac.

same here, what is steve balmer trying to sell us, for every sucessful OS, they follow by pure shit. windows 95 is follow by win me, win xp, follow by vista and now win 7 follow by rubbish 8.

Why should anyone struggle to learn an OS:confused:
Many are already familiar with the conventions used in win XP/ 7 & the Mac OS.

Any technological advantage ? I don't see how this thing can help me sort my picture and video files efficiently. I think they want you to buy with their proprietary online stuff again. It's about them, not us, users.

i have 30 inch LCD with no touch screen, only mouse, why would i want an interface for tablet for my PC. I dun not understand what microsoft trying to sell to us?

Microsoft is copying Apple, and trying to sell a touch-centric ecosystem to you. It is trying very hard (and desperate) to convince you that its walled garden is better than Apple's.

Even the marketing material and website layout for Microsoft's new products resembles Apple's.

During Steve Ballmer's reign as Microsoft CEO, Apple envy is all he knows.

When the iPod was selling well, Microsoft came out with Zune.
When OSX 10.5 came out, Microsoft came out with Windows Vista (UI is different from Win XP).
When iPhones are selling well, Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7.
When iPads are making lots of money, Microsoft launched the Surface tablet/notebook hybrid.
Apple Retail Store? Microsoft has retail stores too.

Now Microsoft wants its own App Store. And it is tightly integrated into Windows 8.

Everything Microsoft does screams 'desperation'.

Windows 8 is the result of one bald nincompoop (Ballmer) letting another (Sinofsky) do what he pleases.

Think the direction now is to hav an os with cross platform capabilities...one tat can be use on desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile phone...and most importantly...able to integrate...

While it is easy for home user to change from 1 os to another, since as long as it is able to surf, read email, login Sbf n diap ppl:p ...not so for business and government...eg...moi company had over 50k of pc, laptop, server etc worldwide...all de in house sw is written n run in window environment...it is almost impossible to "jump ship" to another os...

While desktop and laptop had no problem logging onto the network...tablet and mobile phone can't...wat if 1 day...tis also become possible? Wat if 1 day de set of MS office u hav r able to run on ur desktop, laptop, tablet and phone?

Tis is something entirely new...and they probably can't design it exactly the same as convention win os...we are so use to I guess...

As a home user I have plenty of legacy HW which I don't want to throw away: an i7 system, Razor keyboard, Razor Mouse, Canon scanners, Laser printers, Hi Fi sound system, ... I invest in quality equipment & if Microsoft can't show me a reason why should I update:confused:

I visited Sim Lim recently ready to spend $$ on my PC but didn't find anything I needed
I did find plenty of Apple related products I plan to get

For those of you brave souls who have installed Windows 8 and want your Start Button back, install Classic Shell.

I will still avoid Windows 8. Those tiles annoy the hell out of me.

Windows 8 is also a 'schizophrenic' OS with a confusing dual identity. There is a IE10 in the tile Start screen which runs full screen and optimized for touch, but there is another IE10 launched from your normal desktop. Two instances of a browser in one OS. The developer(s) who okayed this ought to be fired.

They have finally realised that they need an ecosystem to compete with Apple. At Apple Steve Jobs had the vision AND the people to build such an ecosystem. It took them years to build it.

I doubt that there is the leadership & personnel at MS to build such an ecosystem. The problem at MS is much like the problem with Spore Inc. They have grown fat & lazy. For years they have enjoyed the successes built by the previous generation.

First thing is drivers upgrade, be sure that printers, routers...etc. will go kaput!..my wireless router did, I had no Internet access had to use LAN cable to connect & DL the driver from Computer Vendor site..in my case, ACER!

The biggest headache of any update is actually with the 3rd party software support. That's why I am never the 1st one to update. This is especially true with beta software like Win 8.0:biggrin:

OK Bros, Good News ...

I have taken the plunge and successfully installed the new OS!

No problem encountered upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. You may have to exit once or twice to
uninstalled obsolete drivers, else everything is smooth sailing. It is highly recommended that you install with
the option to keep all your existing settings. Installation takes about an hour.

From what I can see so far, navigation within and without Windows 8 is no an issue. You can pick it up in
under 3 minutes.

In most cases, when you activate you apps, it will revert back to the "upgraded" Windows 7 desktop. Look and
feel is pretty much the same as the old Windows except for the new Windows 8 skin overlay.

Try it ... it's fun learning something new!

Cheers ... going to bed now!

Zune is a miserable failure, so bad, it did not even dare to come out of USA.
Vista is horribly bug at release, it broke all my old scanner, and printers.
Phone 7, again no interest, but they are not as bad.
surface? no interest at all, ipad is best.

they should replace balmer before microsoft become shit.

Microsoft-Apple redux: the empire strikes back

Posted: 27 October 2012 1101 hrs

WASHINGTON: It used to be that Microsoft was the evil empire, and Apple the scrappy underdog.

Now the roles are reversed, and Microsoft is challenging a dominant Apple, which has staked its claim as the leader of the sizzling mobile sector for tablets and smartphones, as well as the biggest seller of digital music.

Microsoft, still the biggest force in the PC market with its Windows operating system, is making a new, belated effort on Apple's turf.

The Redmond, Washington-based giant has launched its own branded Surface tablet with prices and specifications similar to those of the iPad, and a new Windows 8 operating system designed for tablets.

Microsoft also is making an aggressive push in mobile phones with its Windows Phone 8 platform being used by Nokia, Samsung, HTC and others.

And it has created its own music service as an alternative to Apple's iTunes, with 30 million songs and additional features offered by Internet radio operators.

"Microsoft is the challenger now, and it is taking a lot of pages from Apple's playbook," said Roger Kay, an analyst and consultant with Endpoint Technologies Associates.

Kay said Microsoft is learning from Apple about the advantages of "having control of the integrated stack," meaning software and hardware, along with other services to keep users within the company's ecosystem.

But he said Microsoft has "constraints" because its updates must remain compatible with older devices, making the task more complex.

"Microsoft can write software which is as good as Apple's but it has to be free of the constraints," Kay said.

"Apple can and has said to customers, 'Throw out all your old devices, because we have new ones.' Microsoft has been at a disadvantage."

He said Microsoft has the potential for a fresh start with the new tablet, which integrates hardware and software called Windows RT in a new product.

But the tech landscape is far different than in previous Microsoft-Apple clashes. Amazon claims some 22 per cent of the tablet market, and Google and its partners using the Android system are a major force in mobile.

But Microsoft appears to be digging in for the long-haul by getting into tablets, the mobile market and music.

Kash Rangan, analyst at Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, said Microsoft appropriately priced the new tablet starting at US$499, the same as the entry-level iPad. This will avoid "cannibalization" of products which impact the Windows franchise.

And because Microsoft will include its Office software in the tablets, they "appear less pricey to users relative to iPads," said the analyst, who expects about 5.2 million of the Microsoft devices to be sold over the coming year.

In music, Microsoft is making a new offensive with its Xbox music service more than a year after it pulled the plug on its Zune digital media player, a would-be rival to Apple's iPod.

However some analysts said the new service might fare better.

"The service takes aim at a fractured digital music landscape (where) consumers have to use multiple services such as iTunes, Pandora and Spotify today and do not have one simple destination that allows them to do everything," said Richard Greenfield at BTIG Research.

With the various initiatives, Microsoft is seeking to build an "ecosystem" like Apple, which can deliver the devices and services to remain connected to consumers.

"People are looking to buy a complete package, that's what they buy when they go to Apple," said Jack Gold, analyst with J. Gold Associates.

Frank Gillett at Forrester Research said that while Microsoft is used on some 95 per cent of PCs, its share of all "personal devices" -- which include PCs, smartphones, and tablets -- is only around 30 per cent.

The new initiatives "will simply stop the shrinking, maintaining Microsoft's share at about 30 per cent," he said.

"By 2016, we believe that Microsoft will have about 27 per cent of tablet unit sales, but only about 14 per cent of smartphone sales -- and some of us are very skeptical they'll even get to 14 per cent."

Gold said while Microsoft may not be able to dominate in tablets or phones, its strategy appears to "kickstart" the market to keep the Windows platform relevant.

"You never want to sell Microsoft short," Gold said.

"They have a lot of resources and they're not a company that gives up. They are applying significant amounts of resources to transition the company to address the new market realities. And they've reinvented themselves several times already."

Windoze is not Beta..betta, time will tell, but still fall far short of MAC OS on usability!. But Microsoft is trying very hard to be like APPLE, now they are selling you the kitchen sink...without the plumbing, ha ha ha, maybe basic plumbing..

like their new improve music player...look better than previous versions, sound output better than before, but the have removed the ability to rip & burn disc..that one have to dive into the old desktop & use the old media player there..

the media center...which one have to pay $xx.xx now for some, it is free...is still crappy..

other than that, after using it for a few days already...one will get used to the tiles & moving around but it is till confusing...

the strength, OS boots fast, graphics look better, sound output better, certain things are still confusing?

mine version seems to be set to London & European standard?? the currency display is Pound sign, I can not change it??, the time display is 24hrs instead of 12hrs.. the receipt for the upgrade purchase is from Germany?? & I bought this notebook computer new in Singapore?? from Acer!?

One more thing, I have not been able to solve this was from previous version of Windows 7 & IE9.0 I can not log in here using IE, I have to use Firefox...any body knows why...

More report...after I dig further into the OS...

I use Razor keyboards/mice for both my PCs & Macs. I'm not a gamer but just wanted some quality equipment. I still remember when I would pay $300 for an Apple keyboards. Those keyboards were great. I don't mind investing in qualty since I can recycle the keyboard & mice when I upgrade to new hardware it is I think a good investment.

I find that the new games give me eye strain & sometimes even a headache. The type of games I can tolerate are the old games like Heroes III. All the Hero III games still run on Win 7, even though they do crash after awhile. I just make sure I save often.

Many Spore biznisses are price sensitive. In one place I worked the company was even using "evaluation" copies  Economy is now pretty bad & I doubt that many companies are willing to go through an upgrade to Win 8.

MS always releases beta SW:wink:

Not everyone is as patient & understanding like you. The mom & pop crowd are just looking for something easy to use. If computer companies are going to bundle Win 8.0, I can see many customers having problems.
