The Prime Minister gets paid a whopping $2.2 million per year. While the salary is supposedly designed to promote competence and integrity, the public remains unconvinced. Many S'poreans question the necessity of such high pay relative to the median salary, viewing the gap as a disconnect from the average citizen. Are you sure that you have never heard nasty remarks from your relatives, friends or colleagues about someone who upgraded out of his HDB home to a new condo or who just drove his new car to the office? I have heard this on many occasions. The new condo and car owners did not flaunt their wealth; they were seen or heard to have acquired a new, costly possession.
