'Waste of money!': PAP Minister under fire for 'showing off' as he flies first class to Tokyo

It is indeed shocking and obscene that entry-level ministers in S'pore are paid a staggering $1.1 million per year to carry out public administrative duties. The Prime Minister gets paid a whopping $2.2 million per year. While the salary is supposedly designed to promote competence and integrity, the public remains unconvinced. Many S'poreans question the necessity of such high pay relative to the median salary, viewing the gap as a disconnect from the average citizen. Is this a pragmatic, corruption-resistant method of public administration, or simply 'legalised corruption' where money need not be stolen, but deposited into each minister's bank account every month.

Bunch of low class ses stupid sinkies. Thats not first class but plain business class. Those who flew business or first class often would know the difference. Sourgrapes. Nothing wrong with minister flying business class. Just jealous low class ses

Decades ago, one of the MPs indicated that when they travel with the Ministers, they fly first class on SIA, and that Ministers almost always fly first class.

Yes LKY exclusively take first class seat 1A when he traveled last time

I think that's an inaccurate depiction of the average Singaporean. Most people don't have an issue with wealth itself, nor with someone living in a private property or driving a car. What tends to draw negative reactions is not the wealth, but how it is displayed or projected.

More often, the criticism is directed at those who treat wealth as a status symbol rather than those who are simply wealthy. People who have long been accustomed to affluence often wear it lightly, whereas those who view wealth as a marker of success can sometimes feel a greater need to showcase it.

The distinction isn't between rich and non-rich. It's between quiet confidence and conspicuous displays of status.

Are you sure that you have never heard nasty remarks from your relatives, friends or colleagues about someone who upgraded out of his HDB home to a new condo or who just drove his new car to the office? I have heard this on many occasions. The new condo and car owners did not flaunt their wealth; they were seen or heard to have acquired a new, costly possession.
