KUALA LUMPUR - For days, residents of Langkawi flat in Taman Melati here thought the foul smell emanated from a unit there was caused by a dead rodent.

It turned out the smell actually came from a decomposed body of a man who had been dead for more than a week.

The dead was identified as Mohd Azmi Arshad, 28, who was found in a room by a police team who went there responding to a call received on the smell at 10.30pm last night.

Police believed that Azmi could have been murdered and his body was left to rot by his assailant.

It is understood that Azmi, the fourth of six siblings had been staying at the unit alone after his mother and younger siblings moved to Gombak.

Azmi's immediate neighbour Rozlina Mat Zain,32, said she only noticed the foul smell after she returned home from Eid Adha celebration almost two weeks ago.

"My parents came to visit me and asked me about the smell. I told them it could be froma dead rat. The smell got stronger during the day and not so much at night so I did not suspect anything amiss," said Rozlina.

She said she only knew about the body when she saw police there last night.

"Now it feels so eerie knowing that the smell came from dead body and the person was my immediate neighbour," said Rozlina.

Azmi's body has been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.

The case is classified as sudden death pending the post-mortem report.
