KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — A 65-year-old former police sergeant who allegedly fled a hit-and-run crash led authorities on a dramatic 50km cross-border chase before being arrested and testing positive for amphetamines.
The pursuit, which mobilised police units from both Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, eventually came to a halt when the suspect, who is retired, was intercepted along Jalan Bukit Beruang in Melaka.
Acting Rembau OCPD Deputy Superintendent Azmi Ali stated that the ordeal began earlier that night in Taman Sedia Raja, Chembong, where the suspect’s car allegedly rammed into a van and a second car.
“Rembau police received a call at about 10.30pm regarding the incident,” he said in a statement, according to The Star.
“A patrol unit dispatched to the scene spotted the vehicle and attempted to intercept it. However, the driver refused to pull over, triggering the pursuit.”
As the chase crossed state lines, Azmi said that backup teams from the Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah districts were roped in to assist.
Following her arrest, a physical search of the suspect yielded nothing incriminating.
However, officers discovered four pills, suspected to be ecstasy, concealed in a bag inside her vehicle. A subsequent urine test confirmed the presence of amphetamines.
“Police will apply for a remand order against the suspect at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court today,” Azmi added.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug possession, and Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 for failing to exercise due control of a vehicle.
