A blind man called the police after noticing a foul smell coming from his neighbour's flat, leading officers to discover the neighbour dead inside his home.
The decomposing body of a 69-year-old man was found at around noon on May 26, in a unit on the 10th floor of Block 174C Hougang Avenue 1.
Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the blind man, surnamed Lin (transliteration), 75, said the deceased had moved into the rental flat only recently and had been living alone.
He said he first noticed an unusual smell on May 25, which grew stronger over time and also drew the attention of other residents on the same floor.
Sensing that something was amiss, he called the police on the morning of May 26.
Maggots inside the living room
Another neighbour on the same floor said she had last seen the deceased about five days ago, adding that he had a son with special needs who visited him occasionally, Shin Min reported. The neighbour said that when the body was removed, she observed that the deceased's living room was in disarray. There were apparently maggots inside the living room as well.
In response to Mothership's queries, police said they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at the location at around noon on Tuesday.
The man was found motionless and pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations do not point to foul play, and investigations are ongoing.
