The STOMPer wrote in an email (Aug 1):

"I just saw this the other day and decided to snap a picture of it to send to you.

I would think so too, since we decided to stick to the Chinese name 牛车水. Or maybe should be COW CART WATER. If we had wanted to make that place Chinatown, we should adopt a Chinese term that is commonly used overseas, which I believe is 唐人街.

I think Buffalo Cart Water is more appropriate, since they actually used water buffaloes to cart water in the old days, not that i was there but from pictures.

'COW CAR WATER' is obviously an direct translation by a foreigner, very likey an Ah Tiong la.

Quite a few stalls in hawker centres selling chicken rice and such are manned by them nowadays. Probably a job no locals wanted !

It's bullock water cart. Originally from Malay Kereta Ayer, Chinese translated it to 牛车水 after taking over that area. Chinatown was used also but later would sound a bit odd since the whole of Singapore became Chinese majority, one big Chinese city. The name Marina Bay has its origins in Malay too, Teluk Ayer, meaning Marine Bay of course.
