Hong Kong's MTR has introduced a new ultrasonic testing vehicle (UTV), the Rail Detective, which can reduce track inspection time by half and identify small changes to rail conditions or the budding of a crack.
The new HK$46m (US$5.8m) vehicle will be operated at night on the MTR network after other trains have stopped service, joining the two existing UTVs currently serving on the 211km MTR network.
The new UTV is designed to run at a top speed of 35km/h and will be able to check the complete Kwun Tong Line in one overnight period of three hours, while the older UTVs take two nights to complete the same work.
MTR chief executive officer Jay Walder said that the company is further strengthening its capabilities in the area by launching new and upgraded technologies such as the Rail Detective.
"To be able to closely monitor any changes in the rail condition allows us to carefully plan our maintenance schedule, so that rails are replaced before cracks develop to the surface," Walder said.
"This is how we are able to minimise delays caused to passengers because of rail cracks or breakages during the service day."
According to MTR, the new ultrasonic technology can 'see' through solid steel to the inside of the rail by emitting silent ultrasonic waves sent out by external wheel probes rolling along the rails.
As the new UTV rolls along the rails, it automatically compares the state of the individual rail section with data collected during the previous survey.
MTR's chief of operations for engineering David Leung said that the possibility of cracks developing is a natural phenomenon due to the heavy loads applied by trains.
"By continuously enhancing our rail maintenance regime, we ensure our rails are in top condition to offer a reliable service," Leung said.
