Har,what you wrote makes too much sense and detracts from the happy comforting notions mistakenly held by all Alfrescoians . So please desist from posting what you just did. Or are you shooting for Chee's job. ..... Just kidding lah.:wink:

A man's worth is measured by his enemy's respect.I bet if one of LKY daughter brings Dr.Chee as a marriage material ; I have no doubt both the pa and ma would be dancing all night around Istana Angsana trees -bollywood style.

And talking about reteat and making friends with enemy in the context of Leegime is like Gandhi's non violence doctrine against Japanese Imperialist. It simply won't work .

Then don't quote Sun Tzu please. He'll turn in his grave.

@3_m Yah, Very smart.

Actually wasn't directed at you. Seem like you never heard of this famous phase. (just google it)

The underlying meaning is economic issues are the mean driver of politics. Forget about human right, sinkies don't have a taste for that.

Agreed. And I would add the dimension of not giving a damn about the random guy in the street unless they stand to benefit in some way.

The former is called schadenfreude, the latter job security.

In highly materialised pressure-cooker singapore, sinkees are mere economic digits to be exploited, squeezed dry and discarded anytime at the whims and fancies of the MIW.Most sinkees are materialisitc selfish cowards and politically immature. They deserved to have their heads on the chopping board.

Every now and then, we will have threats like this questioning the existences of WP.

To those distractors, dont you realised that the more you try to put WP down, the more WP gets to shine?

What is human rights?

To the developed nations human rights abuses as basic violations to life - war, rape, genocide on one end and freedom of speech, assembly, association, belief and worship; legal rights and due process; rights to a job at good wages under reasonable conditions, and economic security at the other. To some human rights violations as employment discrimination on the basis of race or gender.Even PAP pro foreigners policy is an abuse of human rights. Why?

Because we deserve the right to an adequate standard of living as our human righst. The right to a life free of poverty. The right to fair participation in the economy. Our right to food on the table and shelter our family because no matter what our income or ability we all contribute to this world we share and therefore we all have a right to share in its richness---not equally as the communist doctrine but equitably.

Remember, it's the improvement of human rights condition that resulted China's economic booming, not anything else. PRC were just "given" a part of their human rights--the right to be rich, to be successful. The booming is because people were suppressed under Mao for too long. . ...and Deng came and released partially that pressure.

When we talk about Democracy, we don't talk about "The rule of the mob" anymore. The old system is an ancient Greek system that killed Socrates. In fact, Jesus was killed that way too. In today's context, many people are referring to "Freedom of Speech", "Freedom to Choose", and our own "Individual Rights". So, NS is never part of Democracy in that sense.

People around the world are talking about this. The people of the world demonstrate on the streets to curb the excessive and the abusive power of their government to override what is good for the society and the country as a whole. This is democracy ! Whether you like it or not, democracy is always part of a republic's working system. If democracy has failed to exist, then this country is only a republic in name like the DPRK ruled by another dynastic asshole.

Using Economy as a driving force is NOT only deceptive but also temporary. What can we see from the past Europe and the USA ? Such is not considered as progress but a time bomb waiting to explode into another revolution. We must not be blinded by such greed and sweet talks by those fascist who allied themselves with evil capitalists. Capitalists are not loyal people because they are opportunists. Unions should exist as a free org to fight for their own well-beings NOT as the government puppets !

For the benefit of the new chaps and even some of us, you might want to explain or expand. I am sure many people are keen to find out more.

I don't know your intention to ask me to write more about the issue, it has been chewed until rotten and spit out.

In short summary,
- Chee goes hunger strike
- Chiam disagreed and holds CEC meeting
- Chiam wants veto powers in SDP, CEC refused
- Chiam quit SDP, Chee asked him to consider
- Chaim starts SPP, SDP continues with Chee

This is not 3 in 1 where one liners are well regarded for obvious reasons. Anything longer and they will be lost. Here it is best to explain your statement or position.

What can change the political environment? Sending more opposition members into parliament. When the ruling party feels the danger that it can lose everything, then everything is possible even the GRC system. In fact the GRC is a double-edge sword. It can cut both ways when majority votes get close to 50% or there is no majority party. Using a loud hailer won't work. I have only one wish which to see a political system based on a fair representation of the people. Once this is achieved, the rest will fall in place. Let the people decide what they want in society. Human rights are not absolute. They are relative and measured by the degree the individual has versus the rights of the overall community, one group versus another, one stratum versus another.

Hi,

I am ready to be enlightened but what you have shared above does not really help. Why is Dr. Chee going on a hunger strike? Why has Chiam disagree? Did Chee go ahead with it and take glucose drink along the way? If so, then I can fully understand why Chiam opposed that idea.

I have read SDP's version, basically saying Chiam made unreasonable demands, etc, and hence the CEC was left with no choice but to let him go. However, if your position as the Sec Gen is being undermined by your protege, what is the point of staying on?

Mrs Chiam herself had said in an interview before - "For the sake of my husband and to let the younger generation understand 'Uncle Chiam', I have to step forward to clarify matters. He did not turn his back on the SDP. When we were forced to leave, our hearts were filled with anguish."

I think the whole saga involved more people and more issues. Of course this was a major issue - in regard to how to deal with Chee. None had his qualifications back then, yet none had his impulse either.

If I needed to recruit a principal for a school who must have a rare degree in certain sociology, there are less than 10 in the whole country and the only one applicant I had was a dreamy coolhead and unrealistic hothead on different days (note not that I am referring such attributes to Chee), to accept such a person would be a quarrel among the decision board for days, to reject would be a difficult decision.

In short, they were strange bedfellows who did not know how to work together.

To me, the whole fallout was good for opposition in the long haul, in terms of lessons learnt. You can see that some has not learnt their lessons. Another lesson: don't go elitist when you hate elitism yourself.

Note that such fallouts have stopped when recruiting professionals seem to be easier these days. No one is indispensable any more.
