What makes a condo so much more expensive but people are still willing to get loans and pay for it?

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

It’s like people asking why pay so much for a meal for an air ticket for a hotel room for a car etc etc there are tons of cheaper alternatives that get the job done in the same way maybe even in a better way.
 
Security is over-rated. The security guard at my condo is always either sleeping or not around (Maybe in one of the room upstairs fucking some filipino maid).
It’s not overrated you can see the stats of break ins , crime etc but then again majority live in hdb so maybe the data is skewed but you can do a % comparison. I’m sure condo trumps hdb when it comes to safety

If that condo is going to be your only home, the whole financial landscape changes completely. The 20% ABSD rate does not apply to S'poreans for a primary residence. The ABSD is to protect owner occupiers so it is explicitly targeted at SG citizens who buy their 2nd residential property. If you do not own any other residential property here or anywhere else, you do not need to pay ABSD. It is still a good investment as that condo acts as a hedge against inflation.
