Bosses hiring foreigners over S'poreans? Not true

MORE Singaporeans are complaining that employers prefer to hire foreigners over them.

But investigations by a tripartite panel that looks at work discrimination issues found that the accusations were invariably unfounded.

'In the cases we have intercepted, employers say this is based on the qualifications of the person and not nationalities,' said Madam Halimah Yacob, a labour MP who is co-chairman of the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (Tafep).

The alliance does not keep track of the number of complaints, but 'we do see more of them', she told reporters at the sidelines of a conference on fair employment practices.

Noting the concern expressed by Singaporeans who feel they have lost out, Madam Halimah said: 'We tell employers to be very careful and not say they prefer a certain nationality as Singaporeans get alarmed. Their ads should be based strictly on their needs.'

Her comments highlight an issue that has sparked tension in Singapore owing to the surge of foreigners in recent years.

Some netizens have posted job ads online, circling parts of them which specify that only certain nationalities need apply for a position.

Madam Halimah, however, feels the problem is counter-intuitive: 'Wise employers know they should look strictly at merit so that they get the best talent for the organisation.'

Her Tafep co-chairman Bob Tan, who is also vice-president of the Singapore National Employers Federation, agreed.

'From an employer's point of view, we want to hire the best. All things being equal, I would prefer to hire a Singaporean. A Singaporean has roots here. Whatever investments we put in, he will stay,' he said.

'Very often, there is some misunderstanding on why foreigners are hired over Singaporeans. It has got to do with the job requirements.'

Asked if cost is a factor as some foreigners tend to be less costly to hire than Singaporeans, Mr Tan said: 'Not necessarily so. In this tight labour market situation, I don't think anyone is being discriminated against.'

With the Government making clear it is slowing the flow of foreigners into Singapore, he added: 'It makes it more urgent for employers to hire and retain as many Singaporeans as possible.'

Wtf are these people blind or stupid or both? Stop lying to us!

a load of bull..

They are rubbing salt to wounds, and treat us as 3 year-olds.

If they remain in denial mode for long enough, then oppo may have a better chance. Should thank these idiots (or it is a natural process of decay).

One Act Play : To Need Or Not To Need (by Wheelie Shakeleg)

Scene 1

Singaporean : Chief, that day I went apply for job, the boss says wants PRs and foreigners only.

NTUC : Is it? Don't worry, I go check for you.

Scene 2

NTUC : Boss, got people complain you hire PRs and foreigners only.

Boss : Chief, we hire according to our needs only.

NTUC : What do you mean needs?

Boss : We need to underpay and we don't need reservists disruption.

NTUC : Oh I see. Next time you say hire based on needs. That's all, understand? Don't mention citizens or reservists, understand?

Boss : When people ask why, what are the needs, how?

NTUC : Use your brains please. Say something like confidential business strategy.

Boss : OK sure, thanks for the understanding and tip.

Scene 3

NTUC : We've checked already. You've misunderstood. They hire based on needs only.

Singaporean : What are their needs then?

NTUC : It's confidential business strategy. You understand, this type of thing cannot leak out.

Singaporean : But I'm still jobless, how?

NTUC : There're lots of needs for you out there if you look hard enough.

Singaporean : Like what?

NTUC : Like security guard or taxi driver if you can drive. You better go look quick. Some companies are applying work permits for foreigners to fill these needs already.

If the gahmen want us to shut up then be absolutely transparent (this is what they have preached) with the numbers.

- How many Singapore citizens are employed
- Singaporeans vs PRs vs FTs in which market sector, viz - finance, industrial, commercial, services, government ministries, etc
- at what median salaries in each sector
- how many Singaporeans, up to the retirement age, are unemployed. their qualifications

And do not massage or hide the numbers by classifying Singapore and PRs as residents.

Excellent they won't hand it over a plate graciously !

The Labour MP seems to be telling Pro-FT employers "to be more discreet" when preferring foreigners, and not to say it out loud in their ads. You know these days "Singaporeans get alarmed" so you can employ FTs but do it discreetly and don't cause any alarms.

If Labourer MP tell labourers to bare with it while employers continue to employ FTs, and laboueres still must continue to work tilll drop dead, then something is VERY wrong with the system.

Wonder why these Labouerer MPs exist or who is paying these Labourer MPs salary ?

Another good example of ministers sleeping on their job. We can easily extract 10 ads per week and email them to the labour union and seek their explanations on the matter why locals are being discriminated. That will wake them up and think critically of the matter and not just brushed it off like nothing has happened.

It's you who need to wake up. The government and union are the ones supporting foreign hiring.

You should be our PM because more talented than him. Really know how to Tai Chi.
Nice! Up up

someone tell him to speak proper english first...damn this is embarressing ... a scholar a minister speaking singlish on national tv and etc....no wonder americans/british say our english are bad and dont understand us...

This is sad, i am not against hiring of FTs, where they are good and can contribute to the country, we should welcome them and let them integrate into our society. Instead, its the other way round and we have to integrate into theirs. At least make it a fair competition if the country really wants us to compete fairly instead of skewing everything and discriminating against us.

We don't go to China and force people to speak in English.
We don't go to India and start forcing people to speak in Mandarin.
We certainly don't go to others countries and insist/orchestrate the hiring of our own countrymen and discriminate agains the locals for jobs.
What happened to when in Rome, do what the Romans do?

Our government has forgotten or confused the meaning of host and guest. Now its like the guest comes in, sleeps with the wife of the host, shits on their bed and take their money. The host sleeps outside, guards the house and has nothing to eat. To add insult to injury, the guest is told that the host owes him a living and the host is told that he must thank the guest for screwing life for him.

"Fan ke wei zhu" A political/cunning manuveur, turning from the role of the guest into the host in order to gain better leverage/advantage.

Thanks to the folks on top, we are now guests in our own country. Soon, we will be the new "guest" people.

Soon it will be:
"ke ran lai, kan pa pa, pa pa qu dang bing, ma ma ba ku zi tuo xia, zai jing yi bei cha"
