How Chinese minus English spoilt it all

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->
<!-- end left side bar --><!-- story content : start -->
MY SON, eight, is in Primary 2 in Maris Stella High. Primary 1 was a breeze for him. Not only was he among the top three pupils in English and Mathematics, but he was among the best third in Chinese in a mother tongue class of 36.
He is one of the few non-Chinese, if not the only one in his class, to study the language.
It changed when he started Primary 2. From a cheerful and bubbly boy eager to go to school, he became gloomy and sad. The reason was Chinese.
A few weeks ago, he came home crying because his new Chinese teacher refused to speak in English. It was made worse by the fact that my son had enjoyed learning Chinese in Primary 1.
Who will suffer? No one but my son because he will not understand 90 per cent of what his teacher is saying.

I see the problem with the parents. You had put your son into a Chinese class and you should expect the fact sooner or later Chinese will be taught in Chinese.

I guess you are an Indian. Why did you not sent your son to a school that teaches Indian? You can't blame the bull for not producing milk when you should buy a cow instead.

It is informative and help parent like me prepare my child ahead of her P1.

I wonder why they did not set an expectation for the mother tongue? If so, parent will probably better prepared their child for it.

This letter reminds what my wife asked me two weeks ago. My elder daughter is going into P5 next year and she is definitely qualified to take higher mother tongue as she is top in her level and in all subjects. Thus my wife seeked my opinion whether to let my daughter do the higher mother tongue.
My reply was to ask which country would dominate in this century and whether just by taking up the higher mother tongue would really cause her grades to fall drastically. And even the grades indeed fell a bit, would the shortfall be made up by the golden future? My wife got my hint and hope the author would be enlightened!

Funny. If her son was top 3 among 36 in Chinese at Pri. 1, how come couldn't understand 90% of Chinese at Pri. 2? It's standard and logical linguistic training practice to cut off from mother tongue references once the basic is established. That's how one improves towards true fluency and naturalisation into a smoothened second tongue.

this chow chee by Ft Armpit Nagpal talking cock again. last time want flat subsidy, now want the national chinese standard to be lower for his son to catch up. next month he will ask for Mrt to stop in front of his house.
