I don't know the details regarding how he managed his finances so I cannot comment on his specific case.
However I can speak from the experience of providing geriatric care for my parents when they were old. My mum was sick for a long time too but my total cash outlay over 5 years including numerous hospital stays came up to no more than $28,000 and she received excellent care along the way.
With all the excellent subsidies provided by the PAP I have to say that she received care that was second to none.
Let MR Lau's confession be a lesson to you. Dont blindly champion the pap and run down those who speak the truth abt the pap.

Good that you admit you cant comment abt Mr Lau's case.
What you shared abt your parents is irrelevant to Mr Lau's case.
So why is there a need to insinuate or bad mouth a sickly man like mr Lau when you said:
"His plight has nothing to do with the PAP. It's because he did not plan for the future by making hay while the sun was shining"
That's the way the world works regardless of which country you are in.
I'm pretty sure his plight has nothing to do with the PAP because I know for a fact that the party provides for its supporters in more ways than one. When I was in Singapore I too sucked up to the PAP and in return they offered me opportunities that were not available to ordinary peasants.
I grabbed those opportunities and used them to achieve financial independence.
Once I was financially self sufficient I deserted the PAP and moved out of the country.
Yes I stand by my statement. Mr Lau should have invested his money wisely and he would be in such dire straits today.
Not true. Mr Lau believed PAP's claims. But now he realises that PAP lied. He feels betrayed.
My hope is that less Singaporeans feel the same way as Mr Lau when they are in their sunset years
I hope you dont have to come back to Singapore and face pap's health care costs when you are in your sunset years.

As a matter of fact I do intend to return to Singapore if I need tip top medical care. This is because the Singapore healthcare system is far better than the NZ system which is antiquated, understaffed and poorly funded.
Just to educate you.
Mr Michael Chng passed away on 8 Oct 2016. He was transferred from a hospital to Novena Hospital just before he died. I know how much the hospital charged Mr Chng's family for the ambulance transfer.
I hope someone here in the know will mention the cost Mr Chng's family had to pay for the transfer.
It will shock Sam and he will forever seal his mouth and he will not dare taunt the sick anymore

I suspect he is just whining hoping that PAP will take pity on him and take him back. Most pro-PAP PMETs adopt the same strategy when they are retrenched and kpkb to Gilbert Goh about FT policies. But deep inside their hearts they are hoping that PAP will hear their cries and take them back. They are just using Gilbert Goh to pass the message to their masters. When they get their bones back, they will not hesitate to bite back.

All the surveys by established and respected organisations point to the fact that Singapore is tops in many areas.
The problem with sinkies like yourself is that you don't know how lucky you are. You'd realise it pretty quickly if you spent a couple of years living in a country like NZ where the government is unable to solve the most basic of problems because the country is simply too poor.
