Kovan murder suspect: from model policeman to bankrupt cop
Yahoo! Newsroom - 16 hrs ago
He was a model policeman who looked after his family and then fell on hard times.
That is the emerging picture of Iskandar bin Rahmat, the suspect in the shocking Kovan double murder of Tan Boon Sin, 67, and his son Tan Chee Heong, 42, on Wednesday afternoon.
Neighbours at Iskandar’s Kim Keat Avenue flat told Yahoo! Singapore the 34-year-old moved into a three-room unit late last year with his parents and a woman whose identity remains a mystery.
According to Malay TV channel Suria, she is a female relative – possibly a sister – of the single Iskandar. Chinese evening paper Shin Min Daily News said she is the wife whom Iskandar married in 2003.
News and current affairs channel Channel NewsAsia also reported that Iskandar, a senior staff sergeant, was the breadwinner of the family.
On his now-deleted Facebook page, he showed a liking for vintage motorcycles. Iskandar owned a green Vespa himself, and rode it to Malaysia on the night of the murders.
‘Pride’ of police
Iskandar’s 14-year-career with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) had its distinguished moments.
The Straits Times reported that in 2002, a then-Corporal Iskandar helped apprehend a pornography seller at Bedok Interchange.
Later, as a Sergeant, he was featured on the SPF website after a member of the public commended him for his "outstanding work and “professionalism”. The article, which has been taken down, also had Iskandar’s commanding officer describe him as “the pride of Bedok North Neighbourhood Police Centre”.
Then, according to police, he ran into financial difficulties in June last year due to “personal domestic” issues.
Iskandar did not declare his debts – a requisite for civil servants – and was hauled in for disciplinary proceedings at the start of this year.
He was stripped of his position as an Investigation Officer, deployed to perform administrative duties and barred from carrying firearms.
According to Shin Min, Iskandar was declared bankrupt on Thursday, one day after the Kovan murders, and owed OCBC bank more than $60,000.
Knew his victims
Police have revealed that Iskandar first came into contact with one of the victims, Tan Boon Sin, as early as November last year.
The elder Mr Tan filed a theft report at Bedok police station when Iskandar was the officer on duty. His case was subsequently reassigned to another police officer who was investigating a series of similar thefts.
The full extent of the relationship between the two remains unknown, but Malaysia's New Straits Times claimed, via "an SPF source", that Iskandar and Tan Chee Heong were “romantically involved”.
"The SPF is not ruling out the possibility that this may be a crime of passion”, and with a revenge motive, the source had reportedly told the Malaysian daily.
Iskandar was arrested by Malaysian police on Friday night while dining at a restaurant in Danga Bay, Johor. He had crossed the Causeway on his scooter Wednesday night, and was captured by security cameras at the Immigration and Customs Authority checkpoint.
He was brought into the custody of Singapore police on Saturday and will likely be charged in court on Monday.

1) two lives are gone n you still want to rub salt on others' misfortune ....KNN

2) illegal biz??...you got proof...people got registered proper and legal workshop, workers you know..
next time want to throw stones....must AIM properly..

3) you no read papers or watch tv??...two weeks ago 1 ah neh oredi taught you how important it is to be honest and truthful when you AIM....

If it were a legal business, the Mat cop wouldn't have suddenly met up with them, confronted them and killed them. It's not a simple robbery.
Or your business could be legal but you're doing something fishy outside.

You seem unusually butthurt by legitimate ponderings... are you connected to the Tans?

And what good would hourly updates do???
If you are going out door, would you prefer to know what is the psi at the moment, or an average of past three hours?

If you are trading shares, would you want the price as trading now, or average of past three hours?

Do you think there are sensors on every square meter of this island? You control windspeed and direction? What good is a hourly reading from Bukit Merah when you are in Marine Parade?

Hourly readings don't help at all.

like that, can we say the mata must be doing his job well by helping to arrest the two...and the mata killed them in self defence when the crooks resisted arrested...

Sounds like you are related or associated with that Tan's family.

Registered firm means it's really running a legal biz? Old fart also claimed that his team members are running a clean gahbrament.
He said they are "legally paid" millions so that they won't "pay themselves illegally". In reality is it true? Think again.

Be careful what, who and when you AIM. You may ended up AIMing the wrong target and waste tax payers $$$.

Re: Brother Golden Dragon, any updates on Kovan murder?

Have been wondering why an old guy and his son just running a vehicle workshop business can be so rich?
They can have so much $$$$ to bid for all the unique number for his house unit, cars etc?
That Tan family members may be doing some sort of illegal business under the disguise of his vehicle workshop.

It doesn't cost much to bid for number 14 J because most people would shun it.
