KUANTAN: A man is believed to have murdered his family, including his two young daughters, before taking his own life at Taman Cherating Damai here today.

The family of five was found dead inside their single-storey house by the suspect's 15-year-old sibling, who was awakened by a loud commotion, around 7am.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the deceased were identified as a 55-year-old woman, her 32-year-old son who is also the suspect, his 28-year-old wife and their two daughters aged three and four.

"Preliminary investigations suggest the man had slashed his mother, wife and daughters before killing himself.

"We found the bodies of the suspect, his wife and their children in one of the bedrooms, while the elderly woman's remains were found in the kitchen.

"We have recovered a knife believed to have been used by the suspect during the attack," he told reporters at the scene.

Yahaya said there were six people in the house at the time of the incident, including the suspect's younger sibling, who was still asleep.

"He heard a commotion and, upon checking, realised that his mother and brother's family were dead. The boy then alerted neighbours, who informed the police.

"Police found that two other siblings who lived in the same house were at work during the incident," he said.

On the possible motive, Yahaya said the suspect had previously been working in Selangor but had quit his job and returned to Kuantan about a month ago after securing employment here.

"We are investigating various aspects, including whether the suspect had mental health issues or financial problems," he said.
